James Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago 1 hour ago, hypochondriac said: Agreed. Just interesting to hear someone like Blackmore saying it. From memory he was a lot more relaxed last summer and seems to be a fair bit more worried this year. The league has two teams in it this year that are quite a bit stronger than last year. We do seem underpowered compared to West Ham, for example. Bowen, Castellanos and now Piroe is a serious strike force for the Championship so clearly they aren’t hanging around. Mubama has a lot of promise and has looked great in pre season but huge gamble to have him as the Stewart replacement. I wonder whether we can’t really spend much this year, especially given we are trying to keep the team together until at least January. It does make spending £9-10m on Dobbin a bit perplexing. Looks a decent player but not someone we needed, certainly not ahead of a CM to replace Charles who it was clear was going.
JohnnyShearer2.0 Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago Why do people think Blackmore has anymore insights than the rest of us? I find him always a little negative and it's crazy to write off Dobbin after one game. 7

I can't imagine we were asking Werder Bremen to pay the full £6m we had forked out and yet they still decided against it. We did bloody well to get players out the door last summer (god knows how much of their wages we were paying), but if we somehow now get £6m after all of that I'd be amazed. Apparently did well on loan last season and 3 Bundesliga clubs interested. May fetch us a decent amount.

No one has written Dobbin off after one game other than maybe cretins on twitter. Don't be ridiculous. 3

You say no one has written off Dobbin. But plenty on the Dobbin thread questioning what was the point of buying him. Don't think I'm being ridiculous, more of a case it's been one game and he was played on the left instead of in the middle.

They are questioning if it was wise to spend 9 million pounds on an Azaz alternative where in the opinion of some people that money would be better spent elsewhere. That's not writing him off after one game and your characterisation of it as that is disingenuous at best. Yes clearly Adam Blackmore knows more about what is going on than the average fan. He talks to people at the club and or ally multiple times a week.

Writing him off as not a good player for us is insane, it’s been one league game and he’s scored in pre season. I think it is fair to ask whether the £9-10m we spent on him could have been used on a player in a more necessary position. We have players we can move around the front 3, we are very short in CM and arguably up front if Larin were to get injured. 1

Just goes to show the tightrope he’s walking, and damned if he does say something, and damned if he doesn’t.

That position was one of need before the window opened. So was striker, and we have signed two. CM wasn't an issue until Charles departed. CB wasn't and probably still isnt seen as a position that needs a new signing unless one departs.

We didn’t just have one player who can play AM. Matsuki can and has played there for a start. We’ve stood still in terms of numbers in the striker position with Mubama a very inexperienced (albeit high potential) replacement for Stewart. We’ve known Charles was going all summer so plenty of time to have a replacement signed up. Agree on CB, bad game from Stephens but he will be OK. Any other season I’d be pretty relaxed but we need to win 2 games to even break into positive points, we need a fast start and could yet lose our manager to a ban. We are in a league with two extremely strong teams and really need to go back up this season to avoid, IMHO, a Stoke or Swansea style extended stay in this league. 1

It's not just about an individual player, it's about the strength of the squad and the starting 11 as a whole.
LaptopSaint Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago 1 hour ago, SNSUN said: Probably rightly so, we have West Ham coming in all guns blazing, Wolves will be up there again and Burnley will still threaten. On top of that Boro have gone about their transfer business very well and the other usual suspects are stronger. We don't have a bad team but we have only really signed Dobbin and Mubaba to last season's squad and lost Shea and Stewart. We're almost standing still by other team's standards. I still expect a flurry of activity late on in the window though, there's only so long we can go with 3 CMs anyway for a start. ‘Almost standing still’ after being the best team in the league for the second half of last season isn’t the worst place to be. We could easily have had a fucking fire sale after the spygate fiasco. Yet here we are with Peretz and Larin signed up and plenty of time to bring in others. Let it play out.

It's probable that Alfie and Adam know a similar amount (particularly given that they occasionally share lifts to and from games.) I don't agree that he is negative usually, it's why for me his latest opinion pieces are a bit more concerning than usual. 2

Signing an AM is a smart idea. It's the spending 9 million on him that I question if we are as broke as some are suggesting.
hypochondriac Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago Sounds like the promising cb is going to Burnley. Shame but really he was only coming here if THB was imminently on his way out. Expect THB will go at any rate but hopefully we have someone else promising lined up (not a youngster please).

That would be a pretty bad look amongst fans given Solak’s comments after the Spygate debacle about having a team gunning for autos.

A mid table prem team like that. I'd be amazed if we sold him to West ham given the signals that would send out.

Brighton have already spent big on a CB this summer so think they are unlikely. Palace would be a good fit team wise but they have barely spent any cash this summer, doubt they suddenly drop £30m on a CB from the Championship. Fulham I guess possible.
Saint86 Posted 48 minutes ago Posted 48 minutes ago Sounds like Anel won't be happening then, seems Burnley have got in ahead of us.
HarvSFC Posted 42 minutes ago Posted 42 minutes ago A few red flags regarding Ahmedhodzic, while he was undoubtedly good for Sheffield United in the Championship, he was very poor in the Premier League when they got 16 points (https://www.s24su.com/forum/threads/anel-ahmedhodzic.92929/page-9). I know THB was hardly class in the Premier League, but he's a bit younger and you can lay some blame on the managers we had and the tactics. So, if we did replace THB with him, got promoted, we'd probably still need two centre-backs to be secure in the Premier League next summer. Also, hardly been a success in Holland, in a considerably easier league. Feyenoord are pretty much giving him away after one year. I know they did the same with Larin, but different positions and does lightning strike twice? Not too disappointed to not bring him in. Just need to keep hold of THB.

I wonder if we were only sounding him out as a THB replacement and never as an addition? i also think the slowness to trim the squad and bring in cash (outside of Charles) is now holding us back. Charles fee maybe covered the shortfall bit then other sales to be our spending money and with Ramsdale, Suga, Downs, BBD, Sam etc all still here then we are in a position of having to wait to sell now before buying.
