The Milkybarkid Posted 15 February, 2009 Share Posted 15 February, 2009 Marsden or MLT. Either would do a better job than their modern-day equivalents and I doubt we'd be fretting about Preston next Saturday if we still had both.... Can I have both btw? Badger Posted 15 February, 2009 Share Posted 15 February, 2009 Alan Ball. For all the plaudits Lawrie receives for how well we did -after 1976 - and he is our best ever manager according to many posters,'Bally' was the inspiration on the field and in the dressing room. Only Jimmy Case has had somewhere near the respect from his team that Ball had.Paine,Channon and MLT were great players who happened to be team captain;Ball lead the team and drove them on. SKATE_HATE Posted 15 February, 2009 Share Posted 15 February, 2009 :smt115David Prutton. Not sure if he was captain, think he was for a few games but i'd like to see him back either way. Only player who really looked like he gave a damn when we got relegated from the prem. Should never have sold him, even worse think he left on a free! Him and Oakley would be a dreamteam central midfield IMHO. In this league of course
cambsaint Posted 15 February, 2009 Share Posted 15 February, 2009 Alan ball was the best captain of Saints I ever watched. He was truly inspirational, forever pushing a team of very good players along. The only better I ever watched were Moore, Mackay, Crerand and a few from Liverpool. Legend in my eyes. Out of interest, who actually is our captain these days? From what you have seen since the eighties I respect your view Bexy.Case was the best captain since Ball.Svennson might have been a good option in modern times, injury aside.Suggestions of CMFG or more laughably Benali though are ludicrous. Captain these days ?It might as well be Captain Birdseye.

Kelvin is captain now, can never understand a goalie being captain though, as IMO you need someone in the centre of the action, Kelvin really cant do much from his position to gee the lads up. Badger Posted 15 February, 2009 Share Posted 15 February, 2009 Agreed a captain cannot really lead the team from the goal line, you need a defender or midfielder imo. For much the same reason Channon gave up the captaincy as he could not get closely involved without it affecting his game. It then passed to Peter Rodrigues, who is now seen as an iconic figure. For me Bally was a far better player, and captain. As you have also seen both,I respect your view to differ. But I think we would agree that either would be a Godsend for us now. St Landrew Posted 15 February, 2009 Share Posted 15 February, 2009 (edited) Oops, did we miss something on Saints Greatest XI..? I think we'd better turn this into a sticky and take note. Captains, from now on, ought to be in either A or B team. Just my suggestion. P.S. And one for each wouldn't be a bad idea either. sambosa75 Posted 16 February, 2009 Share Posted 16 February, 2009 He was never captain for us but I'd go for Alan Shearer. The perfect skipper. Lead by example, the opposition always knew theyd been in a game against him, could influence referees and would inevitably score a lot of goals. Other than that, Jimmy Case. Someone with a bit of grit and not afraid to dish it out a bit.
andover pedro Posted 16 February, 2009 Share Posted 16 February, 2009 To motivate players it has to be Alan Ball, But i also liked jimmy case and although many didnt like him Ohh Terry Hurlock not sure if he was captain though. Happy days

Jackie@home Posted 16 February, 2009 Share Posted 16 February, 2009 Jimmy Case for me. Absolutely excellent player as well as captain. Chris Marsden wasn't even our permanent captain when at the club - he was only in when Doddsy was injured, though I did like his attitude. However, we would need someone with more footballing abilility than him. Can someone seriously vote for that prat Prutton?
