Bring the Caps out for Bally - Burnley (H) 25/04

Channon's Sideburns

Recommended Posts

Just realised that it is two years ago on 25th April that we lost Bally.

As a celebration of his career, life, and contribution to football on the South Coast, I thought perhaps we could all wear caps to and during the Burnley home game on 25th April - the 2nd anniversary of Alan's passing. It looked fantastic at the game when his kids attended.

It would be our little tribute to the great man - what do you think??

I miss Bally. He always spoke with conviction, used to love his phone ins on Solent on the way up to games - he always stood his ground for the fans.

Would have loved to hear his thoughts on this season - can't think that he would have held back on his assessments!!

I think it's a great idea.

Hope we can get more people interested (Anyone from the Echo reading this?)

Normally I wouldn't think it would catch on, but seeing as it is the last home game of the season it probably will.

And by the way - has it been two years already? Seems like yesterday the entire stadium was singing his name in the last few minutes of the game V Southend.

Nothing. But it's worth remembering a Saints great, on the anniversary of his death. Taken far too early in his life.

So will we be doing it every year? We did a big tribute two years ago so I reckon we should wait till there is a significant milestone. 5 years? Or 10. Jst my opinion

I don't think that 5 is a particular milestone, neither is 2 - the only thing that is certain is that memories do fade.

The most relevant observation is that 25th April was THE DAY and, this year, we have a home match on that day....something which only happens every dozen years or so.

I think that is the real point being made - its an opportunity to mark THE DAY.

I kinda see what 'Hypo' is saying but as it does fall on the 'actual day' I believe it would be an appropriate gesture. No doubt it will be a tough day for his closests and it may just ease the pain that we show he's still fondly thought of.

Personally I wont be wearing one ('kin 'orrible things!), but I've always admired the man (I can even blank out his time spent down the road) for his passion and energy - I'm a Bally fan.

Still not sure tho' if this isn't just 'Channon's Sideburns' attempt at winding up nineteen/sundance cos we all know what he feels about the "flat caps!" :)

Cracking idea. Should be an annual end of season tribute to the great man IMO.

Should also spread the word amongst Burnley supporters, although I guess that most will be wearing flat caps anyway?

With t'whippet tied up outside?

Hmm.

Not sure about all of this.

As others have said, two years is not a particularly significant milestone.

And I am not sure Alan Ball deserves an "annual end of season tribute".

As a player he was good but he hardly gave us his best years and he is not exactly Saints through and through (about half a dozen clubs could lay some claim to him).

As a manager he was very good but only did a season and a half and scarpered off in search of extra cash the minute an offer came up. (Before anyone blames Askham, remember - no-one held a gun to his head to go to Man City. No one. "I wish I'd never left" was easier to say once he'd failed at Man City and some years had passed).

Yes, he died to soon, and yes great bloke, good manager for us etc etc. But I am not sure we need to mark his death again so soon.

I agree about the two years bit, not being a significant milestone, but (Whilst this was second hand information) I believe that he was to all intents and purposes run out of the club. I don't think askham was the problem (He's still s t w at though), but after Bally had, had a few, he suggested Lawrie was the culpriit and that was only a couple of weeks after he left and everything was still rosy upthere for him.

Cheers Aley!! :)

TBF I've been reading Nineteen's posts with interest recently, they have taken a turn for the better (less rudeness etc) so no, I'm not on a wind up.

I just really think that Bally was a credit to us - regardless of the Man City issue, as far as I am concerned he deserves a regular tribute - he was the one of the driving forces behind our promotion in the seventies and helped bring our younger players on (Steve Williams for example).

Met him once in Lymington at a charity game and he was brilliant. Also went to a 'Question Time' session as part of Junior Saints during his second playing spell. Top Bloke.

I have no doubt that he would have been backing the fans this season - he would have stood his ground regarding the fans' rights to march if they wanted....kind of feel Merrington fights our corner still but he seems a bit neutered since the old Falsehope fiasco.

I think you're thinking of the sadly departed scooby. Bless him, I have a flat cap and think it makes me look rather dapper..!

Personally I agree with alehouseboys and Tony F that it'd be nice to remember AB on this day. As we have a home game on the actual anniversary why not take the opportuity to mark it?

My fourpenneth is that some see Bally as one of a literally, dieing breed of down to earth, heart on his sleeve type of players that you (as a fan) felt an affinity to. He was not only an ex saint (2 spells) and an ex manager, he was a WORLD CUP WINNER.

Others, also like a theme for the last home game, so I can't really see why people are questioning the idea. Unless of course someone has a more deserving player to use as the theme?

You know you're right. I suggest we immediately disown Alan Ball, Mick Channon, Ron Davies and Bobby Stokes for their Portsmouth connections!

Disown?? Where did i say disown you absolute tool!!

BTW, Channon was my favourite player growing up but could never be my all time favourite Saint after signing for the Blue vermin.

Sorry for having an opinion though.. I`ll just get back in line with all the other Jester hats and toady round the chosen fews` wise words, eh??
