Whitey Grandad Posted 3 March, 2009 Share Posted 3 March, 2009 The best way to get match-fit is to play games and nothing beats a settled team (on or off the pitch). We're picking up suspensions so something will have to change soon.

EBS1980 Posted 3 March, 2009 Share Posted 3 March, 2009 Yeah stick with the winning side. Villa only used something stupid like 19 players all season, they seem to be doing alright from it.

alpine_saint Posted 4 March, 2009 Share Posted 4 March, 2009 For the first time this season we are playing a settled, stable, confident team, that is WINNING. NO CHANGES - barring injury or suspension.

del boy Posted 4 March, 2009 Share Posted 4 March, 2009 Brum might have their own problems - they are reported to be without "as many as seven first-team players" for the game against Bristol City tonight. Lets hope its a hard game! http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_1/7908490.stm
Greenridge Posted 4 March, 2009 Share Posted 4 March, 2009 Aren't these guys are going to get knackered pretty soon?! Confidence from recent results coupled with the adrenalin from the same and a desire to play will seem them through. Everone wants to play when on a winning run, let's hope it continues. ozzmeister Posted 4 March, 2009 Share Posted 4 March, 2009 No changes....what is lallanda is fit again, replace him with Spider (who I understand was our weakest player yday?) Or put Lallanda on bench instead of Smith? What we could do with Dyer back now to compliment a very near balanced team.
samoakley Posted 4 March, 2009 Share Posted 4 March, 2009 Well i think we could have a strong bench having BWP lallana and smith on bench all quickish and skillfull ok smith is not has consistent as lallana or dyer or bwp but im sure it will come these three comming on for the last 25 mins for players who are tired wouldnt change too much shape of the team and give us pace and skill. trousers Posted 4 March, 2009 Author Share Posted 4 March, 2009 Don't get me wrong, my gut feel puts me in the "don't touch anything" camp, but, given we're now hailing Wotte as the better tactician, wouldn't it make sense for him to CONSIDER changing to a slightly more defensive/grittier line up against Brum on Saturday. My thinking: I'm guessing we'd all be happy with a point away to Brum (especially on the back of three wins....on the back of three not so good results would be a different matter!). So, perhaps, just perhaps....it would be an idea to exchange one attacking midfielder (McGoldrick probably) for a more defensive and aggressive midfielder, i.e. Wotton. If, say, we then get to half time at nil nil Wotte can take a view based on Brums perfomance whether to revert to the more attacking line up for the second half or stick with the more defencive line up if Brum are on form, and hang out for the draw. We bemoaned Poortvliet for dogmatically sticking with the same tactics whilst we were losing. Shouldn't we still look at any merits in tweaking tactics whilst we're winning too? As I say, my heart says "stick with the same line up" but my head is wondering otherwise.

Steeleye Saint Posted 4 March, 2009 Share Posted 4 March, 2009 Don't really see what you could change - most of them pick themselves now. The only option would be Lallana for Schneiderlin, and Wotton for McG - but he has been linking play well recently. Stick with it I say. You've got the subs to change things if necessary. As I say, my heart says "stick with the same line up" but my head is wondering otherwise. It doesn't necessarily mean that changing an attacking player for a more defensive player makes the defence more secure. What nearly always happens with the withdrawal of an attacking player, is it allows more freedom for the opponents to attack and put the defence under greater pressure, forcing them to defend more deeply with little outlet to relieve that pressure. Far better to continue to use the three attacking players to defend from the front and buy time for the rest of the team to get goalside. We are doing that really well now.
