Surman to Newcastle?

Reluctantly I'd accept a bid of £1m for Surman.

I know people criticise him on here, but IMO he's a decent player who has just struggled for form at times this season.

He's one of our best players and I'm not surprised that he's being linked with the likes of Newcastle.

If we get a buyer and are then in a position to keep Drew, then I'd be delighted as he'd be first-class in League One.

However, that looks increasingly unlikely and so I'm resigned to the fact that Surman will leave at some point during the summer.

Rubbish player. £1million is £1million too much for him. Hope it's true.

Funny how Surman is rated by football experts round the land and yet despite him being a local lad, Saints supporter, and scoring 7 goals from midfield for us last season for a struggling side, there are some idiots on here who slag him off at every opportunity.

Sometimes I think some of our fans deserve not to have a team to support.

Not sure how this affects his ability to play football.

It doesn't - that's why I mention that actually in a struggling side that couldn't buy a goal he scored seven. From midfield.

That is more then testiment to the fact that whatever idiots on here think he is a decent footballer, maybe not Premiership standard but about the best we have.

to be fair to the geordies they are making good of Nile Ranger who hung around in our academy for a fair bit (admittedly causing a bit of trouble) and probably fancy their chances at having a go with another saints youngster. Nile scored 22 goals for their reserves last season and scored for england under 19s last night against Bosnia..

Yeah, see the thread about Wade Elliot too

Easily our best midfielder, would be a shame to lose him but might have to accept £1mill.

I think he will benefit from being in a team where he doesn't have to babysit a bunch of 18 year olds. The Toon will get a bargain IMO.

Agree with that.

Can't understand why people are so quick to criticise Drew.

You just know that people will be moaning on here when Surman does eventually move on as well.

When I saw your name I was instantly gonna slate you for that Tranmere appearance, but no, you have a point.

Spot on. £1m might be too good to turn down in our situation though.

Mind you, Vital Football sites are far from reliable sources of information.

I personally would hate to see Surman leave, he is SFC through & through and he's a decent player. All of you that slag him off can Piiss off

You obviously haven't been a season ticket holder in the past 2 years

I have been a ST holder for the last 2yrs. Surman is our best outfield player and I would hate to see him go for £1m. Most of our good forward moves go through him, he can play CM, LM or LB - better than the majority of all the other players in our squad, has passion and cares about the club. Yes, he lacks pace, but he has genuine class about him. All the people that slag off Surman are probably the same that cheered the two most over-hyped players our club has seen in recent history - Skacel and Wright-Phillips - louder than any other player for the last 2yrs...

Just don't get it

Lots of players have potential. Surman hasn't improved in three years and can't handle the pressure of being one of our key players. Maybe a move will be best for both parties, he's clearly not going to show any of his potential here and we need the money.

Move him on for a million quid and we're laughing, couldn't really care less wether he does well or not at his new club.

Have Newcastle actually seen him play??

He's not worth £1M, even in our financial predicament

If Kenwyn Jones is worth £20m and Rory Delap was worth £4m ..... surman is probably worth £1.5m at least.... He is still young and has time to develop. I think newcastle will get £1m out of him!

Think of it like this. If Surman was player for Charlton and just got relegated to League 1, and if you were Saints Manager, would you pay £1m for him?

Yes. Just as I'd pay up to £3M for Jonjo Shelvey.

Ridiculous. Sorry, but he is quality player... local lad... and good luck to him if he goes. Deserves better than his own fans slagging him off.

******** after the **** he's put in over the last couple of seasons he deserves all the stick he gets just like any other player who pulled on the shirt last season. It's not like he even tried hard half the time.

He scored 7 goals last season from midfied. Season before he only scored 4 but sent much of it at left back. 5 goals the season before that.

So that's without trying? **** me the guy must be worth 20 million at least!

I don't care how many goals he scores. If he's supposedly worth a million quid I'd want more than a handfull of goals and a couple of penalties each season.

He doesn't put in anywhere near enough effort, he jumps out of challenges and tackles every single week. Towards the end of the season he was even worse, can't wait untill we find someone to take him off our hands.

Definitely, yes. He's a young, English talent who has proven in the past that he's a decent player.

Admittedly, he hasn't been at his best for a large part of this season, but he's shown what he's capable of.

I'd be very interested in signing him if I was a Championship manager, especially for a fee as little as £1m.

I know the game and this board is about opinions but **** all of you that slate Surman. He gave his ****ing all this season in every single game.

I won't deny he didn't perform the entire season (and likewise the season before but he was good in patches and no one is going to tell me that he does not try.

Let me add that he offers real quality (not many other do at SFC) and when he is gone and we replace him with moe **** like Holmes or Wotton then don't come crying to me. We should do everything in our power to keep him and Lallana. If you sell the last remnants of quality then you will be left with dross. He's worth several million in my opinion, administration or no administration.

Think this part of your comment is a bit harsh IMO. If anything, Surman's form has suffered because he's been trying too hard! He's a committed Saints fan who wants what's best for Southampton Football Club.

And as for saying you can't wait until we find someone to take him off our hands, well lets see if you stand by that comment when we lose Drew and we sign an older replacement with half the ability of Surman.

What with all the problems our club is going through at the minute, it could be some time before we see a former England Under-21 international playing in a Saints shirt again.
