TijuanaTim Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 Y'know not the obvious like the Best hat-trick, Cantona or Henry. Here's a few I recall. Gazza sporting a mullet and socks round his ankles in his teen debut at the Dell, apparently Jackie Charlton didn't rate/like him and he had to wait for Willie McFaul to take over...just a teenager, but what a breath of fresh air (Saints 1:1 Newc, I think). Shilts .v. Frank McCavenney (sp) early one season in the mid 80s, that son of a bit¢h was fantastic, seemed unstoppable. West Ham's François Van Der Elst (did he play for Anderlect too) what a game he had in a 2-1 Saints win one time. Chested the ball down in his own area and dribbled all the way into our's until he got pulled down from behind. Jeez, what a game!! Justin Fashinu against us for Notts Frigging County, I think not long after we'd had in on loan. He made Ken (6'4" streak of krap) his ***** taking three points from us at fortress Dell the year we nearly did it....Christ we coulda done with those three points at the end of that season. What are your memories?
Right sider Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 Gary Walsh was magnificent for Man yoo one season And I will always rememeber Waddle on the left wing for Spurs when he scored from about 30 yards.
smithy Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 Remember going to Old Trafford to watch Saints in the cup midweek - We played them off the park and lost, but seeing Giggs running with the ball just took my breath away - such immense speed and control, it was like the ball was tied to his foot. Chorlton Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 Don't think he scored, but Darren Anderton was superb that awful night when Spurs beat us 6-2. Henry just about every time Seeing Beckhams full arsenal of deadly passes & crosses in a 3-3 at Old Trafford Schmeical (sp) in a 2-0 win V Citeh at SMS. WOuld have been at least 6 Memory block on the name, but a Boro forward riipping us to pieces at The Dell in a 3-1 win. think he was Croat or that neck of the woods. Boksic? Southall just about every game he played at The Dell. For a couple of seasons, he was the best in the world IMHO And one from nowhere, Carlisle's keeper in a classic Milk Cup tie at The Dell. We were 2-0 down from the first leg and threw everything at them but he stopped it all, till Martin Foyle got a late goal and we won in extra time. All a vivid memory for me as it was my first night match.

Chorlton Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 I think when Giggs calls it a day, people will start to class him in the same bracket as Charlton & Law. Maybe not Best, but you would argue that Giggs won far more than Best did, and over a far greater period of time

I was thinking more of a surprising display, like skinny, little Terry Conroy of Stoke one time in the very early 70s. He looked like he'd break but he made Berkshire Hunts of our two big, strapping centre backs.

oxfordshire_saint Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 As someone mentioned above, the Citeh game where Schmeichel pulled off some amazing stops really sticks in the memory, was a privelage to witness one of the finest goalkeepers the world has ever seen still making saves like that in the latter years of his career. Bergkamp's goal to open the scoring for Arsenal before we went on to beat them 3-2 in 2002 was a great finish, again it was a privelage to see a true great do something that amazes you (even better that we went on to win in such dramatic fashion!) Arizona Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 My first ever game was THAT match against Villa in 2005. Nobby Solano came on and turned the game around. Also Pires when we lost 6-1 at Highbury, bout 2 weeks before the Cup final.
StBaz Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 I remember seeing John Barnes, in his Watford days, playing at the Dell. I recall it was a foggy day and you could barely see across the pitch. He was a class apart from pretty much anyone else on the pitch that day.
Papa Shango Posted 1 July, 2009 Share Posted 1 July, 2009 Scotty Parker springs to mind immediately after he singlehandedly got Charlton back into the game with two wonder goals, in the 3-2 game 03/04. One of the most exciting end to end games ever. Damien Duff tore us apart on more than one occasion. Especially at Ewood on a Monday night SKY game (2001/02 I think). Darren Huckerby often seemed to play well against us as well. I remember one ice cold December afternoon at Carrow Road a few years ago he ran the show for Norwich. Others I can think of are Trevor Sinclair and Freddy Kanoute one time at the Dell for West Ham. As mentioned above, Alen Boksic showed what a class act he was for Boro at The Dell. Bobby Pires always seemed to score against us as well.

madsent Posted 2 July, 2009 Share Posted 2 July, 2009 Jermaine Pennant with a hat-trick against us at Highbury when we lost 6-1. The only 3 league goals he ever scored for Arsenal. Jimmy Carter scored twice against us for Arsenal in a 4-3 defeat at Highbury. Only 2 goals he ever scored for Arsenal. That hat-trick by Chris Bart-Williams for Sheffield Wednesday when they had no available strikers and we still lost 5-2. Think Jason Dodd got his first goal for us that day. For me the most demoralising away performance was Jostein Flo scoring 2 headed goals from corners in the last 2 minutes for Sheffield United when they were 3-1 down and down to 10 men at the Dell when Branfoot was in charge. labibs Posted 2 July, 2009 Share Posted 2 July, 2009 I remember a match against Leeds around the turn of the century I think, we lost 1-0 (think Bowyer scored right at the death) Ferdinand absolutely dominated our attack without breaking a sweat. Just seemed to glide through the game and never looked troubled. Always stuck with me that performance, obviously he's gone on to fulfil his potential since then. All a vivid memory for me as it was my first night match. I remember Southall and Flowers having some sort of goalkeepers competition in the early 90s. It was an open, end of season game with loads of chances but both keepers were awesome and amazingly it ended 0-0. Boksic was the culprit when Boro beat us Brad Friedel - who Souness couldn't get a w/p for - used to be a bogey keeper and WGS once said he should have been wearing a Superman outfit in goal. Can remember being 2-0 up on the opening day at Derby and we were murdering them when Tahar gave away a free kick 30+ yards out. Branko Strupar then unleashed a stunning free kick that rocketed in the top corner and Derby fans were as shocked as us Mark Venus's 30 yard missile in WGS's first game. Tugay also hit a peach the same season for Blackburn. Rooney's double goal MOTM performance for Everton as an 18 year old in a 3-3 draw, clearly something special. Scott Parker scored 2 stunners for Charlton at SMS, one of them must have moved a long way with the swerve, Niemi was beaten all ends up.
