Huddersfield 3-1 Saints - Post Match Reaction

Sh!te. From listening to the radio sounds like we have been outplayed for 99% of the game today. More signings needed before the end of August especially in midfield. 9 points from the next 3 games are a MUST, 2 against probable relegation battlers & 1 against a team who has just come up at SMS, any less than 7 will be unacceptable imo.

Sounded awful - i don't know why i listened to the entire 90mins of that because it was a carbon copy of last seasons dross.

You have to remember though the majority of the players in our squad are used to one thing....loosing, every single week...conceeding goals...every single week.

Once (and it will happen) we get some more players in down the spine of the team and rack up some results and goals...we'll start to be ok. I'm not sure we're benefiting with having the likes of Morgan and Adam in the side ATM though - i'd bring them back in slowly, when we're winning again.

It may be too late to do anything this season, or we may still have a chance...who knows, but i think we should all realise that we're not good enough yet and an away game like this, to one of the favs, came way too early for us.

It seems obvious what the problem is, a team under JP were taught to play quick passing football and short. Now under Pardew we're going direct, we should stick to MIXED passing and not put pressure on ourselves by playing the ball back rather than forwards. Get rid of Wotton he's absolutely useless, replace him with a determined CM who is mobile. Or play Gillet with Spiderman for starters those two have a far better understanding.

If we stop playing the long balls and play the ball through midfeild we'll score far more goals and be on the attack more than having to defend for 90 minutes like today.

I think we all knew days like this were going to happen until the squad was strenghened properly.

agree.

im supposed to be the manic depressive here yet I can accept days like this in august as a complete idiot wouldn not be expecting it..

should this happen say december, then I will not be happy...

we have to stumble our way through august and push on from sept properly

Poor result, but it ensures AP knows what he's up against (if he doesn't already!) and Cortese/Libeherr will know that getting new players in in the next 2 weeks is critical.

We have however played two of the favoured teams in this division - doesn't excuse only picking up 1 point, but we will play worse teams than Millwall and Huddersfield, and can only improve.

COYS.

Disappointing of course, but I can't say I realistically expected more at this point.

But after reading through the 2nd half thread, I can now appreciate that it is indeed the end of the world. What could happen next? The "sky is falling" people calling the players spineless? Surely not. I'm sure someone who was at the game will also call it the worst performance he has ever seen. Next. ;)

this is the type of fixture that we would have walked all over in the past. Reality bites and it hurts..........really hurts.

When we were in the premiership? Maybe - yes.

We're not - forget those days, long gone and may never come back.

We're a lower league team now and the sooner some of our fans start to realise that..the sooner we can start moving in the right direction again.

Some of the comments on here from people saying ''how can we loose to **** like Huddersfield?'' is completely misguided IMO. - and they're completely out of touch.

Not a good day at the office.

We need to drop Wotton for starters. He always seems to be a passenger and I appreciate that his experience is invaluable, but it counts for nothing if he can't do the basics like being able to pass a football! I'd put Gillett alongside Schneiderlin, he's a younger and much better version of Wotton IMO and a midfield duo of these two would work a lot better.

Secondly, we need to play two proper wingers in their proper positions. Holmes or Mills left-midfield, with Thomson or a new signing out on the right. There is absolutely no point in playing big strikers like Lambert and Rasiak if we aren't going to get to the by-line and provide them with the chances to score.

Can't help but think that we need 2 new defenders too. Ideally, Pards would get Sam Sodje and Zak Whitbread in. They're both proven at this level and would be a big improvement on the current squad. Signing these players would also enable Lancashire to go out on loan to a League Two side to gain some experience.

Today just confirms what we already knew. There is a lot of work to be done and maybe this result will be a blessing in disguise, as it highlights that we need at least another 3 signings for this squad to be competitive in this division. 3 points on Tuesday are essential now. We need to get rid of the -9 A.S.A.P because the longer it goes on, the harder it's going to be mentally to shake it off.

Still early days, so no need to be too down-hearted just yet, but as is clear for all to see, a lot of work still to be done. Here's hoping for a much improved performance on Tuesday night!

It seems we were attrocious today.

Many are stating we will get better and it will take time, early days etc, that maybe true but before we know it we could be deep in the mire with a susbstantial amount of games gone.

We should be seeing some improvement and not reverting to the types of displays reminisant of last season.

Alarmist i may be,but we have to get points on the board now coupled with signs of improvement.

-9 is a fecking large deficit to make up in the grand scheme of things.

All IMO.

I hope that a condition of bringing in loanees from top clubs is that we are not obliged to always play them.

An 18 year old in the middle is not wise, no matter how good a prospect he may be. Gillett would have done much better.

I do expect more. We should not have lost by such a big margin.

Time for a midfield and some Centre Backs please Marcus. Lowe's legacy players are simply not good enough and need to be shipped on to the League 2 sides that they should be in.

IMO,the whole midfield needs to be replaced. neither of ours are good enough/adjusted/capable to play in league 1.

we need two wingers with some pace and decent crosses, and two hard CMs who can win the ball AND pass it to the aforementioned wingers !

53 minutes (Score 1-1): Saints Subs: Morgan Schneiderlin & Lloyd James OFF - Jake Thomson and Jacob Mellis ON.

Was this the main reason we turned a draw into a heavy defeat?

i thought that was strange also when i saw it, Morgan is a great player but he needs someone other than wotton beside him or it just wont work with him being in the side. I would of tried Gillet in the CM today as they worked great together last season before he got injured. As a whole we need a CB badly and a true winger that can beat defenders and put crosses in for lambert. Lallana probably isnt the best winger for a start, gobern, mills and holmes would be alot better choice on the left.

I don't know why people are so surprised and angry because we still need what we needed last year and the year before and the year before that - a dominant central defender and a reliable link midfielder. Everything - good or bad - flows from those two positions.

There is something else we need, and it's at least as important - a captain. We need someone who will pull the best out of those around them on the pitch - whether by warm words, harsh words, adjustments or sheer example. When's the last time we had that?

Until those needs are addressed we'll struggle no matter what division we're in.

The good news is that we have the resources to act. I hope.

On the coach, could be a long journey home!

Without Kelvin it would of and should of been 8 or 9-1. Thomas and perry were both given the run around, we desperately need holmes fit and playing, our width was non-existant and when you have a big lump like Lambert up front, you need crosses as his goal today showed.

Now special mention to Rasiak for being awful but words cannot describe how bad Wotton was yet again. I am a big Gillett fan but it doesn't take a genius to work out he is 100% better than Wotton ever will be!! Unbelievable!

Gillett, patterson in for tuesday please and sort the defence out sharp!

I hate comments like this.

9 points from the next 3 games are a MUST

any less than 7 will be unacceptable

Apart from the fact that Pardew is still putting his squad together, in what way are 9 points a must or less than 7 unacceptable?

What are you going to do if Saints don't meet your minimum requirements? Let me guess - nothing (apart from more meaningless whinging on here).

In my opinion it's going to get better but not overnight. I bought my Season Ticket expecting a long hard season. If we finish mid season 2009-2010 and then put in a good challenge for promotion next year I will be pleased.

Unlike some I'm not going to start throwing my toys out of the pram after 2 or 5 games, I'm quite happy to give Pardew a chance.

Shocking! Wotton wouldnt get in to Afc Totton, Rasiask doesn't jump or have any strength, and Perry was wrongside more than once but why we brought Lancashire on I don't know! Man of the match was Kelvin yet again, save of the season in the first half! On a brighter note the Lambert song got a decent airing, I tried my best!

I am well aware that we are no longer in the prem. I am a season ticket holder!

My point is when you look at the opposition it is really depressing and the reality is there for us all to see because we are getting totally outplayed by these teams

that we would regularily beat. Just look at some of the posts. Unacceptable etc. Don't shoot me down for having an opinion.

From last seasons team the only player who should be in the starting 11 after August 31st is Davis.Maybe keep Morgan,Thomas and possibly James in the side to Jan if we can't get the right players in.We need 2/3 midfielders, another striker if Rasiak goes and I would replace both centre backs ideally.

A pacy striker, brick house centre back, and controlling midfielder are a must to be competitive imo

Only listened on Solent but we were being outplayed before then. Bring Gillet in for Rotton & find a CB with pace.

Even the OS made it sound like we were battered, and had little impact on the flow of the game.

AP will no doubt be learning a lot about the current team in the last 3 games, I hope he can persuade the owner to get some more players in who can do a job in this league (& pref above).
