SaintNeil90 Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 What a letdown. clearly didnt actually sign anyone then. EDIT - happy we have him but we desperately needed a winger and a striker. We will probably get loans in but they arnt the same as a signing. Knowing our lucky the work permit will be rejected.

Minsk Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 I am happy with his signing, but somewhat bemused. I thought the only hold-up was the work permit and now we are told he has signed for 2 years...... 'subject to work permit clearance'!!!????? I will also echo others in that we really do need to bring in some pace, on the wing at up front. This will hopefully be loans who are subject to becoming permanment signings in January. N.B. I do however have full faith in Holmes and Mills doing a good job for us on the left, when they are fit! And also see a very bright future for McLaggon, either on the right or up front, when he is fit (but I don't think he will be ready for the first team until around Christmas time, and even then he should be introduced gradually and carefully). chrisobee Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 The work permit should never have been refused in the first place, it's a done deal effectively and exactly the type of defender we need and on a permanent basis. Still time to bring in one or two more players IF the right ones are available, I somehow doubt we'll be making signings just to keep people on here happy ! sussexsaint Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 Great just what we needed, I am sure they would not have proceeded if they weren't sure the work permit was still ok - someone said he was in the squad for their friendly last week which tips his % over the requirements - the new lot are a LOT more business canny than the last lot That makes 7 permenent signings since the transfer window opened an they all look pretty decent to me, hope Murty returns to fitness soon and Saga gets some fire in his belly and we'll have a decent looking team - if we are rising through the ranks come January there is always room to acquire again come then

Smirking_Saint Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 Well, that is one of my 3 essential points sorted, number 1, a solid defensive partnership, i am sure him and trottman can sure up the back, i would hope anyways. Mellis might be a disappointment thus far but I have no complaints about the other SIX signings in about as many weeks. I think it is totally out of order to criticise Pardew as I'm not sure how much time he'd have to sleep given he also has other things to do, only trivial mind you like selecting the team, trying to get them to gel in training etc etc;
alpine_saint Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 think this is more likely than this Agree. SFC would not have bothered dotting the "i"s and crossing the "t"s on his contract if they didnt expect the WP to be issued.
L1Minus10 Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 I read this as that the work permit has been cleared by to Dept of Employment and just has to be ratified by the Football League which I would imagine is a formaility. Mind you, I'm optimistic, rather than borderline suicidal about my team - there are so many on here who should not go near the Itchen Bridge on a match day. Colinjb Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 Great signing, but why has it taken so long to 'confirm' it subject to the clearance we all know is needed anyway? Ewell Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 A brilliant singing to slot in alongside Trotman, Perry or Thomas. We then have Murty at Right back with cover by Perry, Thomas or possibly James. Harding at Left Back with Cover from Mills. With possibly the league’s best goalkeeper in between the posts we have finally got a manager building the team from the BACK in the right manner. The goals will come and once we start keeping the clean sheets that I expect us to then we only need to score one goal to win a match. Now the defence has been sorted out then the rest will start to fall into place. George Graham and one nil to the Saints cannot come soon enough! Well done Mr Pardew you are exactly what this club has needed for the past 5 years and I salute you sir!

Saint Fan CaM Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 Good signing (subject to work permit) and will solve a few headaches at the back. In terms of other signings, I think we might be seeing James alongside Hammond in future as our surprise playmaker CM. I think he has an eye for a good pass and is in fact not scared to take on defenders (e.g. Brum game). And from AP's comments I think he's impressed with him so perhaps AP has decided to hang back on that one and concentrate on a loan RM winger. Capel Saint Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 Agreed, a good signing. We now look to have a good solid defence, especially when Murty returns and much needed as we haven't kept a clean sheet in the league. (Not helped by our defence giving away 3 penalties in the 5 games!) I was wondering that maybe Saints have approached a number of players out of contract who were waiting to see if a Prem or Championship team would come knocking before the transfer window shut. Now they haven't got a club we could see one or two players agreeing to drop down to League 1 to join a club. There are still a number of good players who haven't got clubs yet. Plus the loan window is still open so hopefully Pardew can strengthen the squad with a couple of young starlets from the Prem. Certainly need to strengthen up front, as one goal a game is not enough. Chez Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 its always hard to get excited by a signing that we have known about for yonks, but if you try to put that out of your mind and concentrate on the fact that we have signed a 6'4" brute of a centre back that should put a big dent in the number of goals conceded from set peices - then you start to think again what a great signing this is. Cabrone Posted 2 September, 2009 Share Posted 2 September, 2009 Not sure why there are so many angst filled posters on here. Whenever a new player is signed the question is will the acquisition improve the team? In Jaidi's case the answer has to be yes - therefore a great signing in my book. Personally I would even seriously consider playing him at CM next to Hammond actually (providing he showed commitment to track back) - I think he would terrorise defences in that role and more akin to his attributes IMO. James could be utilised as a RM winger, although I would prefer Thompson for his pace.

So I would expect to see Lallana moved over to the right when he (Fish) has regained his fitness. You are correct that another option would be to play Lallana up front, off of Lambert, and I too think it could work (just not much pace between them).
