Aaron Martin Trial

From the Eastliegh FC Website. A young center half I think. Well thought of but only limited games so far.

Following discussions between Ian Baird and Southampton FC - it has been agreed that Aaron Martin will train with SFC during the course of the coming week.

It must be stressed that no transfer deal has been discussed or agreed at this stage, and we fully expect Aaron to be part of our squad for our game at Havant & Waterlooville on Saturday.

He's a centre half yes,I work with his neighbour and he regularly updates me on his progress. He's been scouted many a time by lower league teams but nothing has come of it thus far, don't think he's quite right for us though.

I don't understand your point of view - if you have to be updated by his neighbour, and therefore haven't seen him yourself, how can you say he isn't quite right for us?

Is your neighbour a professional scout? Baird recommended Saints take a look at him, and (whether you rate Baird or not) he was and is a football professional.

Because at the time I wrote it I wasn't thinking of him as being a long term option,I was thinking more about the current squad, which I don't know if he's ready for.

FYI - he played the full 90 for the reserves against Plymouth.

That could be very good news. Especially if AP is happy with his showing. Having played for Eastleigh he would be able to take some rough treatment I would hope. Maybe Baird can be given a cheer if it all pans out.

I saw him a few times last season at Eastleigh and rate him. Good in the air and on the ground.

Similar style and build to Claus - not sure if he drives a car...

Definately worth a short term contract.

lmao, let bygones be bygones ffs :D

Now do come on. We all know that for any boy (or girl) born in Southampton there can only ever be one team.

Clue :- red and white army

Ah, if only that were true. The amount of pot-hunters wearing Man Utd or Liverpool shirts is disappointing.

One of my favourite moments at a game Liverpool vs Saints, 1997/98 season. Took the missus ( scouser and a Red ) to the game with me. She stood with the Saints fans.

When Liverpool scored their first goal, a Southampton-born Reds fans, also in the Saints end, starts jumping and cheering. This lasted all of two seconds. All the genuine Saints started turning on him and calling him a "Scouse c**t" ( even though he wasn't ). Stewards had to drag him out sharpish.

My missus decided that cheering for any Liverpool goal was a bad idea after that. We ended up winning 3-2 :)

I do dislike it when the players current Manager says "we wouldn't stand in his way if he wants to go". Makes it sound like they're glad to see the back of him!

A bit different going from semi-pro non-league football to the professional ranks (with the areas biggest club), than a so called 'bigger' club in the same division.

Interesting question, who was the last English player we signed from a non league club? Anyone know?

(I don't btw)

Andy Townsend is probably the last one to make it as a first team regular.

Although Gittens is more recent.

Paul Moody ? Never a regular.
