Ex Saints - How are they doing?

Can't help noticing that Peter Crouch and James Beattie are catching the eye at Spurs and Stoke, whilst Theo Walcott is a regular in the Arsenal and England news these days. Stoke is home to 3 other ex-Saints, Delap, Danny Higginbotham and Ricardo Fuller, while Gareth Bale is at Spurs, but not getting many games. Kevin Davies still seems to be doing a job at Bolton but Drew Surman doesn't seem to have made an impact at Wolves. In the CCC Dexter Blackstock and David MacGoldrick are both playing regularly at Forest, as is Nathan Dyer at Swansea.

Anyone aware of how any other ex-Saints are doing in the top two leagues?

Walcott keeps getting injured - result of Lowe insisting he play too much too young perhaps?

(PS: Not a Lowe dig - genuine question regarding his tender years playing at Saints).

What "years"? He played half a season for us and then sat in Arsenal's reserves for half a season.

Pretty much every club in the league has a Saints connection now, a sign of how many players have gone through the club in the last 4-5 years.

Andrew Davies (stoke - on loan to Sheff Utd). Henri Camara (stoke too I think). Nigel Quashie (wolves reserves) Gregory Vignal (Birm Reserves)

Danny Guthrie and Nile Ranger seem to be doing well at Newcastle, Richard Chaplow is an ever present at Preston. Adam Hamill scored a good goal at the weekend for Barnsley. R. Wright has had a bad season so far at Ipswich. Stern John broke his arm currently "playing" at C Palace as is Ryan Smith. B. Wright-Phillips has made no impact yet at the green army of Plymouth.

Very suprised no one has picked up on the fact Rudi Skacel is without a club still!

You forget Kenwyne Jones too.

Dexter Blackstock notched as Forest recorded a 1-0 win over Newcastle at the weekend.

Matt Mills scored during Reading's 3-1 loss at the hands of West Brom.

Leon Best has been linked with a move to Wolves.

Jack Cork and Martin Cranie are both earning rave reviews at Coventry too.

I'm sure most clubs can look back at some of their former players and say how well they're doing now.

The Walcott leaving early claims make me laugh.

Of course that seemed the case when he scored 3 goals in Croatia or tearing through Liverpool defence in the champions league quater final.

Mick Channon is doing well in Horse Racing i'm told, and last I heard Nick Holmes was managing Salisbury in the Blue Square Prem. Oh and sadly Bobby Stokes died, as did Peter Osgood. Mark Wright has very little hair, and David Armstrong still has very little hair. Terry Paine fronts a sports show in Africa, Matt Letissier presents for Sky Sports, and writes books. Ali Dia still cant kick his own a*se, and Ian Turner is still incredibly ugly.

HTH.

Comparing last year's strikers with now makes interesting reading !

McGoldrick, BWP, Rasiak and John have got about 3 goals between them whereas Lambert, Lallana & Waigo have got 19 already !!

Different league, injuries etc.. all play a part but I can't help thinking that we are better off now than we were this time last season !!

Amen to that !

.even if we did start with -10, the recent away form looks really encouraging.

It was Redknapp who played Walcott, and admitted that he did it more than he intended. Said that once he was in the side, he was just too good to drop.

Nick Holmes is no longer Salisbury manager. He has moved 'upstairs' and another ex-Saint, Tommy Widdrington is now in charge.

Brian Howard is doing very well in Football......I think Sheff Utd last port of call.

Whatever happened to that great player Bradley Right off side Phillips. Night clubbing in Plymouth no doubt.

According to some Plymouth fan who got touchy because I commented on a BWP video saying "hes ****e" - he's one of the best strikers in the championship and is better then all the current Southampton strikers.

David Puckett still involved at Saints coaching the youths.

A quality player (who I played againt 5-a-side) who I remember as a great super-sub.

Dave Puckett, one of the few So'ton lads to get a first team career, played (on and off for five seasons) during McMenemy's glory days. As you said he was super sub but scored mostly when he got the no.9 shirt at a time when there was no regular CF in the squad. He scored 16 goals in 59 apps + 52 subs. including 2 goals v. Arsenal at The Dell in Jan.1982

He'd built a good reputation as a Reserve striker, and scored over 80 goals during the in-between periods when he wasn't in the first team squad. Steve Moran, Cassells, IAN Baird, were other candidates for the CF spot while Frank Worthington rarely scored during his short stay, but life got tougher when he had to compete with Joe Jordan for the no.9 shirt.

After Mc Menemy's departure he lost his way, and when Chris Nicholl bought in the explosive Colin Clarke he must have seen his days were numbered. Both he and Moran were gone inside a few months. Nice to see that a local lad is still involved in the club, as it helps to hold " the legend of the great Saints side ", at a time when everything has been so black.

Ian Baird is managing Eastleigh.

Kevin Gibbens is playing for VTFC.

Keith Granger was on the coaching staff at Saints but is now back at the docks.

Reuben Agboola is into property (I think) after getting rid of his pub.

Many, many more have drifted out of the game and achieved very little - sadly.

You mean those dozen or so starts he had with us before going on holiday with Arsenal and England for the rest of the year? What a ******!

Looks like DMG isn't doing too well. But to be fair to him Forest seem to have like 5 young strikers. Would not be surprised to see him sold on in January/summer. Wonder if we have a sell on clause!

Pity Drew has not been playing. Can't help but think he is a fine example of what Pardew was talking about at the fans forum. That some players move to early and it hinders their career. Because if they stayed a season or so more they would of been playing games. Surely you learn more and progress further by playing games opposed to sitting on the bench or in his case playing in the reserves. It is a shame because he could have done ok with us this year.
