Burley for Reading?

Hope nobody mentions before the interview that the Courage brewery is likely to be closed this year, GB may be attracted by the environs at Reading :)

Really ?

I lived near Reading when that was built and even spent a summer job as a student working on the building site.First year it was really operational was 1980.

As for Burley,I expect Reading will be forced into offering it their caretaker - big mistake probably - and end up sacking him in 6-9 months.

I don't know aht to make of some of our fans. The bloke didn't do a bad job for us. In his only full season he said we were aiming for the play offs and we succeded. We also were the 2nd highest scoring team in the league. Yet that is regarded as a failure. In his next season the rug was effectively pulled form under his feet when Baird, Bale and Jones were all sold. We were nearer the play offs than relegation when he left (though I can think of at least one person who will bite at this and say we were in free fall).

Before Pardew's reign he had a better win ration than anyone, including McMenemy and Bates.

Okay, he wasn't our best ever manager, but he was far from our worst and doesn't deserve the scorn he gets from some posters.

I wish him all the best at whatever job he gets next. Some of you people should grow up a bit.

As for Ian Branfoot, the man that someone famously wrote "I hope you die soon" seem to be going through a revisionary period? The are some incredibly crass people on here, but even Alpine wouldn't have treated Le Tiss the way Branfoot did! I doubt very much whether Alpine would have replaced Shearer with Dixon and Speedy either...but then again....

Evidently its on the cards, Scottish Courage don't need it. I lived in Reading 78/79 when the old brewery was still operating and casting its aroma over the town.

Oh dear. You nearly managed to get through a post without indulging your obsession, SOGGY....

Ah well poor old Reading.

Perhaps they'll hear such motivating speeches such as 'why go for automatic promotion if you can reach the play-offs instead' - 'let's drop our prolific goalscorer'....'There's a lot to play for'...

Or..they'll have a decidedly jumpy Burley in his first press conference..declaring his dying love for Reading.

Mind you, if he does go there, I guess next season Rasiak will know he'll have time on his hands after Xmas.

Would wish George all the best if he ends up at Reading. Nobody starts a new job in life with the intention of failing or making a hash of it. I'm positive that GB had the best of intentions when he started with us, perhaps that waned during the second season as we started our downward spiral - but that is not totally down to the manager.

Why people wish to throw cheap shots with reference to percieved personal problems is beyond me - would they be so readily accepted if they were being recieved, probably not.

Not our best manager over the years, by a long shot - but equally, not our worst. Good luck for the future George.

In most peoples eyes, oh so very true. Perhaps though you should discuss this with one of our other most esteemed ex managers - he would have a very, very different view.

try looking at the stats again taking into account the assistant manager and you will get a better perspective on his abilities. We made the play-offs because Burley was ably assisted by one of the best assistant managers in the game. Once he had left (and before he joined) the true ability of Mr Burley was evident for all to see. We ended up with one of the most demoralised and unfit squad of players that it was possible to have. I had a lot of time for Burley before he joined us, did very well at Ipswich, but it was clear that he was not the same man when he joined us, and has demonstrated his total lack of ability now with Scotland, thank goodness they did not realise the truth until after they had given us a pay off

Partly right but also wildely wrong. We gambled massively in the play off season, it backfired and from that point we were f**ked.
