SaintDonkey Posted 18 February, 2010 Share Posted 18 February, 2010 (edited) We really need Connolly back - he's the only striking partner to Rickie who's 'worked' in a 4-4-2 this season. They're not an ideal partnership but they were scoring goals together. Edited 18 February, 2010 by SaintDonkey

Andy_Porter Posted 18 February, 2010 Share Posted 18 February, 2010 I'm still waiting for Barnard to show us what he can do... I've not been impressed, he's like a slightly taller Simon Gillett playing upfront. Still it's early days, he had a fairly decent scoring record with Southend so he should come good. Being third maybe fourth choice striker is quite a lot of difference to being the main man at a club though, hope he can adapt.
SaintDonkey Posted 18 February, 2010 Share Posted 18 February, 2010 1. Lambert and Waigo have looked great up front together recently. 2. Why is Connolly not ideal up front with Lambert? 1. They've looked good but not been scoring enough goals (don't get me wrong Papa is one of my favorite players - I just think we're missing the more potent goal threat of DC). 2. They don't exactly play off each other in a partnership but are more 2 constant roving goal threats.

SaintBobby Posted 18 February, 2010 Share Posted 18 February, 2010 Connolly returning would be a major boost. I haven't botehred to do the stats, but I think our W:D:L ratio has been enormously better when he's been playing. Our best form of the season has been when Connolly has been a regular. Absolute class act. Just worry that he's destiend to be a bit player for the rest of his ever-shortening career.
Block 5 Posted 18 February, 2010 Share Posted 18 February, 2010 Sad news for Murts. I hope he recovers and gets to wear the shirt again. However the tone of the OS article leads me to agree with John B. It would be great to have Conno fit again. Whether he starts or is on the bench, he is, in my opinion, the best player in our squad. He is so threatening in the box, and can create chances with ease. Hopefully he will be back for the Walsall and Huddersfield games.
beatlesaint Posted 18 February, 2010 Share Posted 18 February, 2010 Glad Connolly's injury is not related to his previous problems. We have missed him big time......as AP admits himself. If fit I'm having a few quid on Connolly to score the winner at Wembley on 28 March
londonsaint1604 Posted 18 February, 2010 Share Posted 18 February, 2010 That's a shame about Murty, how many games did he even manage this season? He looked really good at the start.

S-Clarke Posted 18 February, 2010 Share Posted 18 February, 2010 point one..great..which game was that? Apart from mk dons in JPT they havent played that well together I think they have tbh. Lambert looks a different player with Waigo alongside him, whilst waigio sometimes doesn't come across as the most cultured player...his running/movement and pace opens up space and this allows lambert to offer so much more. When he's up front on his own, we look static and one-dimensional. I just hope we don't go back to that on Saturday.

I fear AP will only go with one up front Saturday cos I think he will see a point as a good result.

They link together well & seem the most productive pairing when you judge results but don't shout that too loud. Nineteen Canteen will wake up & start slating Waigo, highlighting his weaknesses & totally ignoring his strengths (which easily outnumber his failngs IMHO). Makes me chuckle, NC used to always quote stats (esp. about The League, Lowe & managers stats which weren't always relevant when you assume the car crash his old victim, Pearson, inheritted but old news that!) but strangely omits these stats when systematically berating Waigo. Maybe he missed the JPT games, Southend away, Stockport, Bristol Rovers, etc. Regardless, they link up well & Papa picks out Lambert often when most seem to not put the service in for Rickie despite his goals. However, I'd really like to see Connolly back in action. He's a menace in the box, nippy, lays it off well & has a deadly finish.
SNSUN Posted 18 February, 2010 Share Posted 18 February, 2010 Dont expect Murty to Play for us again +1. Aside from the fact he's been out injured for ages, he's not a spring chicken anymore, and we have 3 other players capable of playing in his position. Even if he gets back to full fitness, he'll then have to oust Semi, Thomas and James. point one..great..which game was that? Apart from mk dons in JPT they havent played that well together I thought they looked good in both cup games last week. Waigo was great against MK Dons, we've been crying out for a pacier player up front, and against Pompey he was putting himself about and causing all kinds of grief to the Pompey defence. His eye for goal is somewhat lacking at times, but as long as Lambert is knocking them in, that's not a major concern.

Chez Posted 18 February, 2010 Share Posted 18 February, 2010 Connelly took a while to get his fitness and sharpeness when he got into the side. He's going to have to start all over again. Annoying as he looked tremendous before the injury.
cellone Posted 18 February, 2010 Share Posted 18 February, 2010 G.Murty should have been allowed to finish his playing day's at Reading, akin to Killer. Not palmed off to a lower league club. Serios lack of ethic's on all side's.

Ricky Redstripe Posted 18 February, 2010 Share Posted 18 February, 2010 G.Murty should have been allowed to finish his playing day's at Reading, akin to Killer. Not palmed off to a lower league club. Serios lack of ethic's on all side's. He wanted to continue playing, we wanted a right back, seems like a good deal all round to me. He obviously wanted to play for us, or he wouldn't have come here. Shame, he really is a class defender. Hope he isn't finished and can play for us again. Good luck Graeme.
suewhistle Posted 18 February, 2010 Share Posted 18 February, 2010 Not only that RickyR: he was offered a contract on the basis of playing and he accepted it. Fair for both sides, I feel, plus he no doubt gets decent medical attention at Saints.
docker-p Posted 18 February, 2010 Share Posted 18 February, 2010 From what has been said i would be surprised if Murty plays for us again, which is a pity as he still had a lot to offer. Connelly is a class act and our best player by far. If he had been fit to play every game since his arrival we would be in a play-off place. Under Weststand Posted 18 February, 2010 Share Posted 18 February, 2010 What a shame reading between the lines it sounds like the end of the road for GM at least at Saints. He gave us balance in the team, & his awareness defied his lack of pace. He's been a big miss for us most of the season & still a position we need to sort out long term. david in sweden Posted 19 February, 2010 Share Posted 19 February, 2010 (edited) G.Murty should have been allowed to finish his playing day's at Reading, akin to Killer. Not palmed off to a lower league club. Serios lack of ethic's on all side's. He wasn't injured when he came but he was a bit overweight, and like many hadn't had a pre-season. Most reports I read (from the handful of games he did play) said he showed vision, could cross well and was a real leader type. August is along way off, and if Murty recovers fitness, he could be good for ONE more valuable season. It's obvious that AP had this possibility in mind when he loaned in Otsemobor as temporary cover. ** Many people recall that Peter Rodrigues - in a similar free move from Sheff.Wed.(1975) - really galvanised the Saints defence in the season we won the FA CUP, and but for a bad injury in the following year - he might have gone on much longer. suspect everyone Posted 19 February, 2010 Share Posted 19 February, 2010 No coincidence that our great league run in November and December was when Connolly was fit and firing on all cylinders, and since he has been injured we have struggled. We badly miss him and would be great to have him back for the league run in and the JPT final. I also hope Barnard steps up in the coming games and shows us what he can do. So far it hasnt really worked out for him.
Bucks Saint Posted 19 February, 2010 Share Posted 19 February, 2010 I've not been impressed, he's like a slightly taller Simon Gillett playing upfront. Still it's early days, he had a fairly decent scoring record with Southend so he should come good. Being third maybe fourth choice striker is quite a lot of difference to being the main man at a club though, hope he can adapt. Thats pretty Harsh IMHO. Barnard has hardly had a game (yes I realise he has a couple - but fits and starts). And he scored 15 goals, only a couple behind Rickie and Beckford - two class acts - while playing for a side thats in the bottom half, so I dont think "fairly decent scoring record" does it justice! I think it's very harsh. I think half the problem is that we are comparing him to Connelly and expecting him to have the same impact yet forgetting that Connelly is, in fact, a premiership striker injuries aside. His finishing clincal and his pace deceptively quick. THAT said Barnard is a very good purchase for league one and arguably the CCC and I find it incredible that anyone that follows football, at least anyone who follows football outside of Saints FC, doesn't understand what a good signing this SHOULD turn out to be. I said SHOULD because there are obviously no guarantees.
