Saint_Jonny Posted 6 March, 2010 Share Posted 6 March, 2010 Yea I saw it, it was comical, don't know why the "grown up men" that took it so personally got in such a state about it. This rivalry and level of hate is getting more than a little bit boring now.
chestersaint Posted 6 March, 2010 Share Posted 6 March, 2010 I was right by this although not involved and I think the point was that the stewards and police were aware of this idiot with the flag and instead of getting rid of it they seemed to find it comical. Rightly or wrongly the flag was clearly causing a reaction and therefore potentially inciting trouble, exactly the reason it should have been removed. It was eventually hidden only to pop out every 20 mins or so much to the consternation of the saints fans. Several ejections resulted from this in both home and away ends so in hindsight surely the correct thing to do was to deal with the flag (however insignificant it may have been to some) and thus save the hassle? AussieDog Posted 6 March, 2010 Share Posted 6 March, 2010 anyone who would rather side with a bunch of thugs doesn't deserve to be called a Saints supporter. I despise pompey, but I'm not going to get all worked up just because someone else happens to wave a FLAG....for goodness sake...get a life! I have to agree with some of the others on here.....alot of people are becoming obsessed with the blue few down the road. At long last, after a few years of abject misery with very few bright spots, we have a team we can enjoy supporting. I wish people would remember how to be happy a little more often. If you're upset because we lost, well that's fair enough - but go and sink a few beers and moan about the ref with your mates or something, but what on earth is the point in geting violent over it! sotonianproud Posted 7 March, 2010 Share Posted 7 March, 2010 Tbf my son came home explaining the situation, it seems most of the argueing came from when people asked the steward why the REAL pompey fans ( the man and the two girls with pompey shirts on) were not escorted out and as my sons has explained, he himself did not see no scrapping, apart from a police officer who grabbed a gentleman by the throat. So maybe a bit of chinese whispers has gone on???

shurlock Posted 7 March, 2010 Share Posted 7 March, 2010 (edited) The main culprit with the flag, the bald weasel (probably a recovering scaghead) was untouchable as he had his two little daughters. Would have cuffed all three Amusing how bystanders were getting sucked into something so boringly predictable and avoidable. Don't know if people were 'obsessed'. More like going through the motions, that for the sake of consistency/honour, people assume they must stand their grounds or at least be seen to be standing their ground if others take the ****. chestersaint Posted 7 March, 2010 Share Posted 7 March, 2010 As I have said earlier I blame the police entirely. Look at it this way, I saw 4 Tranmere fans being escorted out at intervals throughout the game because of the tension caused by the poopey fan before any saints fans had even had a talking to which demonstrates the level of 'banter' the our fans were putting up with. At the end of the game and given the decisions by the referee our fans were very upset in general. Cue more titting about by mr poopey and his Tranmere entourage. At this point some of our fans went to ask again (perhaps more vociferously this time) why this was allowed to contually happen. The police and stewards then went over the top and the situation deteriorated rapidly from there. As sotonianproud as mentioned, one saints fan was grabbed round the throat by a policeman and when he pushed the hand away he was then pounced on by 2 policeman and probably will get done for assault! Anyway, the point is the police will probably act on these ejections with cautions so that is an awful lot of paperwork etc taking up a lot of police manpower etc all because the police did not have the basic sense to just tell the poopey guy to put his flag away, zip his and his daughters coats up and move a tad further away. This is just a fundamental bit of common sense. A stewards told me immediately after that they also blamed the police as they had asked them to do the same. It is easy to call those involved morons but this was excessive and totally avaoidable winding up of saints fans. The police waited till the lid was coming off and then decided to act. Very very poor police work.

Sheaf Saint Posted 7 March, 2010 Author Share Posted 7 March, 2010 And I'm sure oh courageous one that you told them all at the time. Those morons won't be doing that again Just what purpose would it have served for me to get involved and inflame the situation further? Some people had obviously already made their minds up that they wanted some trouble so I fail to see what I could have achieved by speaking my mind to them. Knowing from previous experience how indiscriminate police can be at football matches I didn't want to get thrown out myself because I was there to watch the game, unlike some. FWIW there were a group of lads (I say lads, but some of them looked like they were in their forties at least) a few rows in front of us who seemed as though they weren't even the slightest bit interested in watching the game cos most of their time was spent watching what was going on in the home supporters stand next to us. These 'fans' were being watched very carefully by the stewards and the police all afternoon and when they did join in the singing it was pretty much just the anti-pompey songs that they bothered with. Like Delldays mentioned, some of our fans appear to developing (even more of) an obsession with Pompey lately and I find it utterly cringeworthy. Yes, I noticed that too. Totally bizarre given that the "taunts" barely reached playground level at best. Almost as funny was the Tranmere supporter that picked up the ball for a throw in and then threw it away again when a Saint's player came to collect it. Didn't do him much good though as he was subsequently frogmarched out of the ground at the double! Sometimes crowd watching can be more entertaining than the game itself.
