How to honour the great man

A statue and a stand IMO. And while we're at it, let's get rid of "Northam", "Itchen" etc and have a "Bates" and "Le Tissier" stand too.

Most of all, I wanted a passionate, united fanbase roaring us to promotion. I'm ****ing gutted. Let's make his dream a reality.

Rename a stand after him. Not sure which because each fan might have their own idea. I'd plump for the Itchen to be renamed purely as it's where the sdministration is and it would be impressive to see the name outside?

Also for it to be somehow legally protected from altering? In the case that we fall into dubious ownership and an itinerant owner wish to glorify himself?

Uncomfortable with the idea of doing this for living people.

Good idea, how about the fourth being "Ramsey"?

There are two obvious ways, imo :

Re-name the Itchen stand the "Markus Liebherr Stand"

Ted gets some company at the front of the ground.

Any others ?

I personally am not in favour of re-naming the stadium. It's St. Marys to everyone..

A little OTT for someone who saw us play a handful of times don't you think

I'll be getting "Markus Liebherr RIP" on the back of my new home shirt, and I NEVER get anything on the back of my shirts. I don't think I'll be the only one in doing this.

Re-naming the Itchen stand the Markus Liebherr stand would be the most obvious thing to do, a statue of Markus ending up like the original Bates statue would be in poor taste. (Though I honestly think the club have learned their lesson on that score...)

Well obviously it would be more like the MK II model...

I think the stand is a good idea, and also having "Liebherr" on the player's shirts for the next game if it's allowed. I'm sure a similar thing has been done before.

A statue possibly but from what I've heard Makus was a fairly laid back and quiet person so he may have found a statue embarassing

And irrelevant. He had more impact on saving this club than a hundred of you Über fan sash-hating Ultras.

Also factual. Welcome back to the real world.

But less impact than any number of Saints 'legends' on and off the pitch. Don't get me wrong I'm very grateful for his buying us when he did, but lets keep this in perspective. He was an owner for a very short period in our 125 year history.

He became / was owner during the most crucial period in our 125 year history

As I have already stated on the other two threads on the same subject, Markus deserves a statue next to Ted's - no question in my mind of the validity in this. A stand or even the Stadium itself could be renamed by anyone in the future. A statue would serve as a permanent reminder to everyone of the grace with which Markus saved our famous club for our great City.

With all due respect to him, he was hardly in Ted's league. Who knows what might have happened under his ownership but he was only the owner for a season. It is also not true to say without him we would not be here. Someone would have bought us.

A memorial by all means and he will be sadly missed, but more for what might have been than what was.

RIP

I think we need a significant period of reflection before the club makes any decision on this kind of long term tribute.

Let's get on with the immediate memoriums first at the next game and some kind of fomal ceremony after that.

For all we know his family may not want or think appropriate for a stand to be named after him or have a statue put up.

My personal preference would be for something a little more community focused - a Leibherr foundation supporting our city's budding young sportsmen, or inner city/disabled/disadantaged kids. I think Markus stood for legacy and would be good to see him remembered like that.

I'm not comfortable with him having the same standing as Ted Bates, purely because the time he spent with us is just not long enough. Ted Bates got the statue for many reasons, but one of them was simply sheer dedication and length of service which no one else is ever likely to replicate.

But this is all far to contentious to debate sensibly today.

I think it goes without saying that we all agree any idea should be approved by the Liebherr family before being implemented.

I welcome your alternative proposal too.

However, although it may be true that Markus's association with the club was not as long as Teds, my opinion is that when you weigh the impact on the club's fortunes, you cannot separate the two.
