Nicky BUTT

SOTONS EAST SIDE

Recommended Posts

yes this has been doing the rounds for a couple weeks. He reportedly wanted £80,000 a month. Would be an awesome signing, dont care that he is 35, he has stayed fit, just look at what Scholes is doing at Manure

That is just an absolutely ridiculous wage demand for League 1 IMO! To know that our current highest paid players are Lambert & Fonte on about £10k pw, that is just absoultely ludicrous!

He's just the sort of player I (and many others) have been suggesting for yonks that we should target. An ex-prem regular in his "mid-30s" who can command the midfield in this league. Get him on a "play as you play" deal with a win bonus and it would be good business IMHO.

old news, apparantly we were after him but he wanted £20k a week.

What we need to consider is how does that "cost" stack up against the increased "revenue" that playing in the Championship would attract? £20k per week is obviously a lot of money in this league when looked at in isolation but as part of a bigger-picture business plan it would look more sensible if it got us to a point whereby promotion was (almost) guaranteed.

havent we just signed a midfielder? I know he is a different type from Butt, but right now I think a pacy winger is a higher priority. Actually anyone at all with pace would be good. So not Butt, sorry, even though he would defo DAJFU

Nicky Butt has not retired,he was very recently offered a one year contract by Darren Ferguson at Preston,he is thought to be thinking this over along with other offers.

Only last season he lifted the Championship trophy for Newcastle,a very worthwhile acquisition in my view, for the right price of course.

Sorry to break your run Trousers.

He is the sort of midfield general we need but perhaps a little too over the hill.

It's a very fine line though between being "not quite over the hill to warrant dropping to League 1" and "too old for League 1 even".

As Butt proved last year, playing in a tougher league than ours was doable at the age of 34/35 which sort of implies that he's probably "about the right age" to drop into League 1 now (assuming he's still relatively fit and injury free of course).

Exhibit A - Teddy Sherringham

I think he'd be a very good signing, but not at £20k a week. One player wont win us promtion, it'll be a team effort. We've been here before remember Mark Hughes?

True. Although a 'marquee' signing can also galvanise a team and act as a catalyst (was going to use Cardiff's Bellamy as an example but that's a slightly different means to the same end)

And by the same token, they can also turn out to be a disruptive influence too of course

Another 'risk' signing then, Alpine will have a heart attack!!

I can't believe people are referring to Nicky Butt as a marquee signing!

Marquee signing is the In phrase being given to anyone at the moment, i'm surprised Gully wasn't labelled as such.

Another f*cking ginger being linked though, bloody cheek asking for £20k a week with ginger hair.

I understand and agree with what you are saying, I just worry about these guys who are at the end of their careers, would they have the same passion as the likes of Sherringham who was a one off? Is it a final pay packet before they chuck it all in? Are they going to spend alot of the season injured with no real desire to get back in the action quickly whilst they are getting paid a good whack?

Pardew alluded to exactly this in his last press conf.

''we don't want players looking for their last pay day, they have to be motivated to win for us''

makes me think we looked at Butt, then said no thanks.
