I really do not care about this compitition this season. Do not get me wrong I was well up for the Final last season and loved the day overall, but this season it is ALL about promotion. Is this wrong of me? I really do not want us to progress this season in this compitition.

Had a great day, and would love to do it again this season, to successfully defend the JPT would be a great accompaniment to winning the league!

Dont forget if we gain one of the automatic promotion spots there would be no Wembley trip, and who knows when we would return because as a championship club we would obviously not qualify for the JPT!

Injury worries shouldnt be too much of a problem as we have a largeish squad, we're not Pompey you know!

Loads of people on here will agree with you, I'm not one of them. I was two when we won the FA cup the JPT was our first trophy in my living memory that Saints have won. Last year was great a proper cup run why wouldn't we want to do that again? We're supposed to be a top team at this level why shouldn't we be capable of winning the league and the JPT? big clubs like Chelesa and Man U do it all the time at their level. In the JPT we are a top club so why not try and win it again?

Agree with this.

Agree, but if we lose, everyone will kick off and it'll be Pardew out etc. If we hammer them we will be flying going into the next league game - but will mean at least 1 extra cup game which could possibly be a hinderence/distraction to any promotion push.

Catch 22.

It's strange that when NC said the cups were not the priority he got slated now it seems to be the popular view

Now I have started thinking about it, even though we are not likely to get anywhere near the FA Cup Final I would not mind a run in this, but the JPT is not a major trophy and is seen as a bit of a joke. Was far from it when we were at Wembley back in March, but it did not have the same feel that winning the league or the FA Cup would have. Not that I know what that feels like, but I do only to well know what it feels like to stay up on the final day of the season, and that is far more intense than it was at Wembley last season!

Personally, I'm not that bothered about the competition either. I don't disrespect it at all, but Saints priorities need to be elsewhere. The club is one season away from NOT being able to defend it, or should be. As a useful tool for player sharpening it is excellent, and should be used as such, IMO. If it gets in the way of the main priority then it would be better to bow out now. However, once in, then we should defend the trophy, and blood new talent, at the same time. I can see some up and coming players getting a few games via the JPT, if we play it well.

Well maybe we will balls the season up and you can have another slice of stay up fever, given the choice I'd rather win the JPT.

It should be remembered that the JPT has strict rules about fielding understrength teams so even if the club wished to play the devolopment squad they can't. Also when ever people want us to play a weakened side I feel sorry for the fans who have payed good money to see our team play its hardly fair on them.

I would never suggest the JPT is a bit of a joke. It's a perfectly serious competition, of which Saints should be using to their advantage, this season. Don't forget, it gave Nicola Cortese, Alan Pardew and Us a nice taste of footballing success. And ultimately, it gave Markus Liebherr a great first personal payback in owning Southampton FC.

I'd like to see Saints excel in all ways possible tbh, and I think the retaining of the JPT + promotion would be a fantastic season. It's another winnable competition, and there's no reason why we can't add to the silverware cabinet again. It'd be a nice way to finish our time in League One (for the forseeable future) by winning promotion and another cup win at Wembley. With another signing or two, we'll have the strength in depth to be able to put out a changed side for cup competitions and still be a force to be reckoned with imo.

You go into win every game. As pards says - it's only about the next game.

At the end of the day these are professional football league players, they should be able to cope with Saturday > Tuesday games. I say go all out to win it with our best avaliable team, losing cup games isn't going to improve the confidence of the players. We should be good enough to cope with the demands. (+ it's our trophy, we want to retain it!!!)

There won't be an easier/better chance of getting to Wembley ever again after this season (hoping we are promoted). To wish us to lose is just stupid and we will regret it in a few seasons time. It's not a priority but it's sure as hell something we should be aiming to defend when the games come round.

I hope we field a strong side, but think it's an ideal opportunity to give a few fringe players a run-out. Give Bart and Guli some match practice, have Lambert on the bench and give him half an hour to keep his fitness up, and maybe give Mills and Alex O-C a runout, with 2 or 3 of the other Academy players on the bench to get a taste of the atmosphere.

Can't see there being much of a crowd though. Will be very surprised to see more than 10,000 turn up. Would like a win, just to stop some sort of Swindon "hoodoo" building up, and to keep the winning mentality going after Saturday.

Of course we want to win it, but we can't let it effect our League performances and I believe the extra games the JPT gives you does end up being a distraction in terms of preparation/tireness/injuries and suspensions.

Man U want to win everything, but there is a reason why they play their reserves in the lesser games.

Chuck our reserves out against Swindon, if we win then great.

We should try with the JPT!

We would be the first club in history to have retained it.

Its always nice to see saints holding records....which arent a teams most goals scored against us.

Last season I believe we recorded the highest ever number of goals scored in the final of the JPT, so adding the only team to win it twice in a row would be nice too.

Watching us lift a trophy at Wembley was one of the best days of my life, even if it was only the JPT. Rembering how good that day out was makes me think **** it, let's go for it again this year. It's the only trophy we have a realistic chance of winning for a while.

Except that one where we held the record for least amount of wins in the professional football leagues over the last 2 decades. Hopefully, that was a myth, but if it wasn't, hopefully again, we got enough wins last season to make some other team the record holder.

Last season, I was well up for the JPT from the start, as I reckoned we had a great chance of winning it and was sceptical about our promotion chances.

For me, it comes a distant second behind the League, but is way ahead of the Carling Cup and FA Cup. I might care about a single prestige FA Cup game, but not teh competition as a whole at the moment.

I dont think we should just use the reserves. But I think we should exploit it to develop the first team. If a top player is nursing a minor niggle, I wouldnt play them vs Swindon. Similarly, we might want to bleed in some players (e.g. start with Guly)

I absolutely loved going to Wembley in March. I'm too young to remember 1976. But I think I would be less excited about us getting there in 2011 than I was in 2010.

Put the reserve side in. Otherwise I'd rather we got knocked out.

We can't - the rules of the competition dictate that we play at least 6 of the players with the most appearances in their respective positions (for the season to date) or we get fined.

I loved the day out last season but also strongly believe we would have been in the play offs had it not been for our cup runs. Leeds were strolling this league last season until they beat ManUre in the cup and also got to the Northern final in the JPT, and they nearly didnt even go up.

Put our reserves out for the JPT and if we want a record, lets score the most goals ever in a league.
