Frazer Richardson's injury

Please can someone with a medical background (or access to Wikipedia) please tell me how dislocating a shoulder in July renders a player unable to play a game of football until October?

Isn't it just a bone coming out of a socket and being put back again?

Thanks

Think it's the ligament damage that goes with it that's the problem.

The length of time he's spent out is probably due to ligament damage and making sure that it doesn't happen again, as shoulder injuries can come back to haunt players. Walcott's still got shoulder issues now I think, remember reading about his dislocated shoulder and how it kept coming out during matches but he'd just pop it back in and keep playing.

Dislocated shoulders can be very painful; I know I have dislocated my shoulder twice playing football. As stated above its not so much the bone coming out of the socket; it's the damage to the ligament and muscle tissue. As for keeping fit, would have been difficult in the early stages as any shudden or jolting movement would have been very painful - walking at a reasonable pace would have been acceptable!!

Depends on the trauma involved. Assuming it was a fall then the joint capsule and ligaments are usually torn, and the labrum may also be damaged.

Once there has been a dislocation of the shoulder, the joint will have a degree of instability and will be more likely to dislocate again, or become subluxed (where it moves slightly but not fully out of joint). This is because the ligaments, capsule and labrum are damaged and cannot restrain the humeral head and prevent dislocation. In order to prevent dislocation, the Rotator Cuff muscles (4 small muscles situated around the shoulder joint) that surround the humeral head should be strengthened.

Sporting activity should be avoided for 6-8 weeks for rest and then strengthening exercise. Only then should sport training be persued (after clearance from medical team).

i dont understand why he couldn't just have banged his shoulder into the wall and carry on like Mel Gibson did in Leathal Weapon. Pussy.

exactly, and I am sure in Escape to Victory, Pele has a similar injury, and not only comes back on but also scores a superb overhead kick

I dislocated my shoulder in a skiing accident, after too much lunch time alcohol, apart from the liagament damage certain disclocations including mine the shoulder kept on coming out ( even in your sleep) eventualy I had to have it pinned, which meant operation and a lot of rehab, ps I'm no doctor can you tell!

My brother suffered a dislocated shoulder playing rugby. It kept popping back out, doing less and less strenuous things, including the last time when it popped out when all he did was bend over to pick something up. After that surgery was a necessity on it. So yes, it can be a nasty injury and unless it's properly treated will keep coming back to haunt whoever has suffered it.

It's a pain Richardson's been out for so long, but for the good of his career as well as his long term health, it's a good thing they've taken their time in bringing him back, just to make sure that the injury has been properly resolved.

a dislocated shoulder is aparantly one of the most painful injuries to do...minus breaking a bone of course...

...my housemate did it this week and he's a keeper, been told he wont play for around 3 months. 3 days into it he has it out of the sling but it'll be ages until he can save a full power shot, very little range of movement because of the ligaments and tendons that have been injured. Tendons will only extend 6% of their length before repturing, not sure if frazer did that but if he did then any contact will be sore and weight training out of the question.

I reptured my calcaneous ligament last september...and its still not fully healed as i did not have professionla help. i have just started training again with my university team. Can be very complex to get right depending on the type of tear.

when i read he was out i thought it would be around 3 months until he was playing reserve football but we will see.

p.s i study sport and exercise science at uni...thats why i am ITK.

And Maradonna had it when his arm just flew up and out of joint and accidentally put the ball in the net over Shilton's head. Goal because it wasn't intentional. He hared back towards the halfway line so fast that air pressure just popped it straight back in. (Little known) FACT.

I dislocated my left shoulder in a skiing accident about 10 years ago and it has never been the same since. I dislocated my right shoulder 3 weeks ago in an incident in a kids playground. Dislocated shoulders hurt. As far as I can see its only beer and blojobs that take the pain away.
