Somewhere better to be??

I know this subject comes up on here from time to time so here goes because I am at a loss.....................

Today's game was a marvellous spectacle, which became compelling viewing to the final whistle. MK Dons are not on our tails by chance, we were 3-2 up, with such a glorious feast of football before our eyes and the race for the finishing line hotting up, from 85 minutes there were lots of people going home............... Why??!!!!

What is the rush, Coventry Colin had a valid excuse (posted elsewhere), what else was there to see at 4.45 on a Saturday evening.

I could swear Rickie Lambert stood for a moment in a brief lull in the games latter minutes staring into the crowd with a look of amazement at the early leavers.

Answers below please................. because I just don't get it!!

They leave to avoid some traffic. It's a little sad but there we go.

I left 1 game before the final whistle. Saints arsenal at the dell, lost 1-0, henrys first goal. Didn't think we'd score and was meeting a girl afterwards.

I have a customer who was on the books at Villa (and had played in youth teams against Shearer Wallace and Le Tissier) who blew his chance in pro Football because of a girl!! (sorry deviation).

Never ever understood the early leavers.

It makes me laugh that we sing to away supporters "Is there a fire drill?" Just as half the Northam are leaving at around 80 mins.

If you bought a programme today the anorak stats page in there has a little box at the bottom that asks how many goals would you have missed if you left 10 minutes before the end of the game........... in League One this season the answer is 206!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 207 if you include Bournemouth last night.

I thought some tickets had only 85 minutes on them , or maybe we should have a whip round so they can afford to put longer on their parking tickets?

Had to collect winnings from the bookies for 3-1 score in second half but stayed to the end just to make we didn't stick another in, well done LB and AL running to the corner flag!!!!!!!

Happens at every club, regardless of the result. Unfortunately with SMS there is the problem of traffic build-up after games, and leaving 5 minutes before the final whistle means you don't get stuck in a 25min queue listening to Radio Solent after every game!

i do leave early. normally on the 89/90 min mark or say 2 minute into a 5min extra time, if were ahead by 2goals or i'm confidant the game looks to be petering out. the reason is i am very lucky enough to have someone willing to drop me off and pick me up outside the stadium and by leaving the few minutes before thousands of other home fans it can mean the deffernce of not getting caught in traffic for 30+minutes and being even more of a inconvience to my lift.

fact is people pay their money its their choice when they want to leave, i always thought the people who decide after only 10mins into each half to either go to the toilet or go stuff their face with food and drink were more annoying.

Going home early is stupid, I know Southampton gets clogged up after games, but leaving 5 minutes early won't change things.

Had I not finished work at 3pm yesterday, I'd have been down at SMS with bells on. :-(

yeah, it is terrible at SMS, everywhere else you are straight in the car and away and usually home in half an hour, SMS is **** isn't it!

I did it once, we were 3 down against Sheffield U I think at The Dell. Went to get tickets for a Cup match and missed Le God's 100th? goal for the club. Never again.

It's the late joiners and leavers in the first half that I don't get. Some lads near me on the Northam arrive 2-3 mins in to the game, go for a pie/pint at 37, and then religiously leave at 85.

If people want to go early and effectively throw their money away that is up to them, however what reall does **** me off is the inconsiderate dickheads who amble down the steps blocking the view of everyone who wants to stay to the end. If your going to go, then bloody well get a move on!

I'd say that it's none of your fcking business why people leave early. It doesn't make them any less of a fan. It's not a competition to see who's the bestest.

Why don't you concern yourself with supporting your team and worry less about others.

Never understood why people moan about people leaving early or pickign which games they go to.

Never left early, never will...I want my money's worth!

Seriously though I can't understand it ...for me part of the game experience is seeing the game out and applauding the players off...so many times over the years significant actions have happened in the final minutes - why take a chance on missing them for the sake of a few minutes saved in traffic?

However - you pays your money, you takes your choice...nobody can dictate how you spend your ticket money time.

You'd think people would want to clap the players off at the end of the match after a comeback like today? I know I did.

Actually that s a damn good point, regards of traffic issues you'd think people would want to applaud the boys after a game like that...

We park in Radcliffe Rd and have a ten minute walk after the game finishes. We always stay to the very end. We often get caught at Mount Pleasant level crossing but we are still home within 45 minutes of the game ending.

Those who leave on 85 will lose an average 7 minutes a game. Which means over a season they miss 1.75+ games. Plenty of time there for goals and controversy!

I do wish fans could stay until the end.

I can't believe all the people that leave the stadium just after the final whistle. I stay in the stadium until I am physically removed by the stewards, usually about 5:30pm. And then it takes 2 or 3 of them to throw me out. I think that this makes me the best fan of all.

Wouldn't be surprised if that's us!

Always go down at 35ish for a beer, and usually leave early. I like beer and I don't like queues.

Not too concerned if people wish to leave early(some may have no choice). I know I would rather be there for 89mins than not at all. I find far more annoying that we seem incapable of starting a match on time and it now seems 20mins for half time is the norm(never mind some of the additional time fiction). Strange that the discipline of players and managers is quite rightly under scutiny but officialdum dont have any when it comes to organising the matches.

I arrive at the game 10 to 15 minutes after kick off as nothing usually happens in the first 15 minutes, take my seat, go down for a p*ss after 30 minutes and then i can beat the queues for the pies, burgers and beers. Stuff my face with as much as i can eat and drink during during half time. Tend to wait until 60 minutes before going back up so the crowds downstairs have died down and i dont have to queue to get back to my seat, i'm usually there in time to boo our substitutes onto the pitch and leave on 80 minutes so i can get home in time for Think you can Dance. It's what saturdays are made for.

Sorry Johny Boy. Left 5 mins early as had to get back to set up for a gig in Salisbury! Won't happen again :-)

Hey that's a bona fido reason, you knew you had a busy evening but still made the effort to watch the game.

This is not a who's the bestest Saints fan point scoring thread, it's just bizarre to be in the last few minutes of a game that could still go either way (we scored 2 in 2 minutes), and folks are on their toes heading for the exits.

Yes it's a free country and they can do what they want............... But if you intend to go early get your stuff together (and your entourage too) then make your move and get out of everyone elses way quickly not stopping for a discussion about what to have for tea on the way out, or any other social ambling chit chat................... Or worse of all stopping and standing halfway down the steps because we have a chance building just outside the box!!

I can see that it's annoying if you sit near the steps as you always get some plonkers who stand and watch, but generally couldn't care less. The only time I left a few mins early (to get a lift with a mate) some knob said "Got something better to do!?". Really can't see why anyone would feel the need to comment. The guy infront of me said "yeah got a train to catch" and can fully understand why he was annoyed, having some moron shouting at you when you have a perfectly valid excuse.

If I was driving I would leave a few mins early unless the game was on a knife edge.

I always find it easier to stroll to the royal oak once the game has actually finished and settle down with a quiet ("quiet" !! ;) ) pint and mull over the match for half an hour. By that time most of the traffic has cleared. But even saying that, Ive seen lads leave 10 minutes early from 37/38, then seen them in the pub when I got there, and they are still there when I leave, now that logic I cannot understand.

I don't see the appeal of leaving early just to sit in traffic unless there's a genuine reason. I bet 90% of the early leavers have absolutely no reason to get home quicker.

I left 2 minutes early once a few years ago. Think we were getting battered by Watford.
