Beautiful South

Recommended Posts

After a lot of thought I've decided to ressurect Beautiful South and aim to get the fanzine ready for the first game of the season. Hopefully we've got Duncan Holley, Mike Osman, Herbie Taylor, Neil Gosney, Scott Griffin, Steve Grant, Robbie Chandler and myself at the mo... and maybe, if I'm lucky, an occasional article from David Bull.

Obviously I'm looking for potential writers but I'm also looking for sellers. The deal is sell 50 fanzines, get £25. I don't care if people sell outside the ground, or sell on their street corner or at their local pub. You get a box of 50 and you'll get £25 for each box you sell... which is pretty much the cost of a matchday ticket.... so if could be worth people's time as I'm aiming for 10 issues a year.

PM me on here if youi're intersted in writing or selling.

Ah Daren, I would be interested writing-wise. We spoke on/off over the past 2-3 years about the possibility of doing something fanzine wise so I'm glad to see it's finally coming fruition. :) Additionally, if you need a website, I can help...

I can write somefings about footballs and saints if you need Daren. Only opinionated mildly humorous prententious rubbish mind you, and random pyschological pyschobabble about the Saints past and present with occasional reference to our supporters...for header examples: "Kelvin's guide to rolling the ball out of defence", "The Hammond school of pass, move, shoot, oooh its over the bar", and a homage to those days of player profiles when their favourite meals were always an essential piece of info for the keen fan: Saints players favourite meals and how they prepare them at home : Week one : Oxo : Chilli con carne. First of all I call up my mum to come and help me cos I'm not allowed to use knives in the kitchen they're a bit dangerous, plus she boils the rice and that can be dangerous too, plus the chillis can burn so im not allowed to touch them either, and she blows each forkful in case i burn my tongue and its yummy not as nice as toast with jam but im not allowed to use the toaster because its electric and could be dangerous, mummy says im allowed when im a bit older"... "This weeks great debate - Connolly or Keegan, who was the shortest?" (I think that last one is a belter btw), "The man who put his head on the ball : the thoughts of Radhi Jaidi", regular one-liner feature: "More thoughts of Chairman Adkins "Impact player, go get me cup of tea, NOW", or "get off bus, you not in right seat Jason",maybe even "Gus Poyet, he verry funny guy". Got loads of filler ideas and regular article ideas ...let me know if you want any of this kind of rubbish. Mind you if you got Grant writing then your quotient of crap writing is already high( only joking steve, not really, yes i was only joking, mainly secretly i was'nt, maybe i was or was'nt I...). If you got Duncan im sure it will be worthy stuff so maybe you need somefing a little less incestious a bit less steve grant-like(soz again steve - i really like your hampshire cricket tweets by the way- "collapse ahoy" and all that, very good) a bit more not mainstream.. Anyways, let me know!

Can I be first to say I am looking forward to reading Mike Osman's article.....and yes I really mean it.

Top bloke IMO.

Agree totally, am really pleased to have him on board and think he'll provide some really good stuff.

Maligned on by some here but a top, top man who I have nothing but good things to say about...

Darren is it worth considering an upfront payment?

I would happily pay in advance

I might also consider writing an article or two if time permits

unfortunately mine would be factual rather than the humourous content i have enjoyed in your past editions

Good luck with it!

Having read some of your thoughts on here I'm sure it'll be a decent read.

As already mentioned.. humour is the way forward! All sorts of theorising on tactics/players/ club set up etc etc all now happen on here and will be difficult to compete with tinteret.

please just aim to make us laugh with the odd thought provoking article.

Look forward to it

Great to have a real proper fanzine proposed.

This time next year we'll all be cloud hosting everything (apparently) so anything in the real world is welcome.

I can write occasionally if you like - what do I do?

I can also sell at least three copies in Cambridge.

Also how about other stuff like music, culture, etc etc. It's all linked.

I'm not up to who's in which gang/politics etc these days , but the UIS used to have a welcome music bent.

And some humour - we all need that.

Good Luck

For ideas on content I reckon dig out a few old copies of the Ugly or OnTheMarch, quality fanzines that were proper fans viewpoints and humour rather than the usual dull stuff competiting with the match programme.

Man United used to have a good one with United We Stand. Articles considering football culture and fans movements

I’d like to see more tales from the old days, especially rogue like trips across Europe in the late 70s / early 80s and some of the various good cup runs we had in that era.

Nice idea, but BS is by far my favourite Saints fanzine already.

Get 'Shirley Mush' involved from the Ugly Inside, wrote some great stuff at the start of last season but has since disappeared.

He posts on the 'It's Beautiful Outside' forum now. (the forum started up after Stu Romsey wrecked The Ugly Inside with his repetitive and dull postings)

Good news. I used to buy the Beautiful South and look forward to doing so again this season. But to me it was part of the new generation of fanzines and just a little too clean. I loved the Ugly Inside, a proper fanzine, bit rough-and-ready but a real fans mag. Loads of original stuff, cartoons, tales and jokes from a lot of different contributors - I’m pretty sure Daren wrote the ‘Hugh Jardon’ column.

Shame it just got too bogged down in politics towards the end.
