Billy Sharp joins Reading on loan

has he gone for good then ? How much longer does he have on his contract with us ?

Yet another loan. Still another year and a half on his contract with us (based on him signing for 3.5 years 2 years ago). He must be on very good terms with us, because it seems we are unable to sell him at anyone. Wish him well with Donny, seems he will be back with us again for another season yet.

But we're probably subsidising him a wee bit at Donny though, something that the Don wouldn't necessarily have supported because he seemed to have strange ideas about that sort of thing. Still I guess we can sell a few of FF's books to make up for it.

People talk about Cortese's ability but he had a real blind spot on contracts - handing out big long term deals to people who wouldn't be good enough if we fulfilled the vision to rise up the leagues and then refusing to subsidise wages for loans when they weren't needed at Saints anymore.

I've heard this sort of thing is a problem when trying to deal without agents. never mind the player agents, the club agents apparently give the club the insde track on the going rate for a player so that they won't be negotiating blind.

I suppose you have to weigh up a preference for not involving agents with the potential for additional waste with players like Sharp and Dickson on inflaed contracts.

Billy Sharp joins that rather unusual group of one time wonders who became the Man of the Moment and helped turn the tide at a critical moment. There are more examples over several decades.

Promotion in 1965-66 saw reserve striker Norman Dean put in a purple patch between Jan-March 1966 and netting 9 goals (including a hat-trick at Fratton Park - the only Saints player ever to do so).

A great performance but Ted Bates (in his wisdom) judged that Norman probably wasn't class enough for the top flight and instead signed a little-known Welsh CF called Ron Davies (the rest is history).

Ted MacDougall was only with us a couple of full seasons, but he managed 14 goals in 15 games in 1976-77.....which was the same season the memorable Tony Funnell became our own special super sub. In March 78, he came off the bench and scored twice at Notts Forest, and then scored 5 more in the last 10 matches, and we finally got the second promotion spot. Next season he was gone within a couple of months.

Our best ever season 1983-84 saw Steve Moran score 9 times in the last 10 games (when we finished second behind Liverpool).

At this point, we have to acknowledge that Matt Le Tissier's goal tallies saved us from relegation on more than a few occasions.

Likewise the late season signing (and very short Saints' career) of Micky Evans saw him score 4 very vital goals in just 12 starts, at the end of season 1996-97 .. but he didn't survive very far into the following season.

Marian Pahars became legend almost overnight with a handful of vital goals in the last few matches that kept us up in the " Great Escape " season (1998-99)

..and so to Billy.

Never " Saints fit ", and perhaps a bit overweight but he was there when it mattered, and throughout one of the Ricky Lambert's longest "dry spells ", Billy chalked up 8 goals in the last 8 games to see us back in the Premier League.

Perhaps he isn't really " Prem. quality", but we should be grateful for his input at that particular time - and like the others quoted above, his contribution was invaluable at the time. Good Luck Bill.

Based on what exactly?

Posted back in the summer that Palace had bid. Sharp was obviously keen but Nicola blocked it as didnt want him playing for another prem club. He then priced him out of perm moves to a number of champ clubs

He's been messed about hugely and all during a very difficult period in his life.

Billy scored 15 goals in 13 starts for us

He is our most prolific striker ever and simply deserved better

But, what exactly is that information based on? A source? Supposition? Nothing?

Not getting into it all again, was discussed in the summer.

No benefit in dragging it all up again. He's moved on and I wish him good luck

Billy will be stronger for the whole experience, just a wee bit less trusting

BS from GS. Billy Sharp made a career decision that didn't work out. There are plenty of other Premiership clubs that looked at Billy over the years and concluded he was a good Championship player, not more.

I don't think our selection policy should be based on pity, nor should our transfer policy sell someone on the cheap or to a competitor. I am sure that Billy knows the score, and it's not like he didn't get a pay rise.

He did a job. Thanks Billy.

Yes mate

20 appearences in total (13 as a starter) only finished 90 mins in 5 of the 20 games

Amazing record all things considered

He scored nine league goals for us in the Championship, and one League Cup goal the following season against Stevenage. Overall 10 in 18.

I agree he did well for us, but he was not that prolific.

Agreed. Top professional, came in, did a job (well), helped get us over the line and seems oddly treated since. AND he scored against the Skates, what more could we ask for? Very best of luck to the bloke.

We should have given him a chance in the Prem. Afterall, we are STILL giving chances to Jos, Yoshida, Guly, Gazza etc so why not Billy?

Osvaldo is out, Lambert is out of form, him and Jay could have worked quite well

Heard a couple of things on this...

1) another prem start or performance would trigger a clause in his contract (more money or extension to contract)

2) cortese had fall out with Billy and his agent

Point 2 could be linked to point 1

Sounds like he or his agent mugged himself off by having a contract clause along those lines. Imagine potentially fking up your own prem dreams and watching Jos and Gazza play. LOL

Feel sorry for Billy we never really gave him any sort of chance in the Prem and neither has anyone else it must be so frustrating for him to keep getting close and then not getting the opportunity. I'd like to see someone give him a chance when he's in form and happy just so he knows if he's up to the job or not. Solid pro decent bloke and I hope he settles back in at Donny and bangs in some goals.
