Soares cross, Pelle header, 1-0

We have lost a good right-back in Clyne, but his crossing wasn't the best. From what I've read and what I've seen on YouTube (De Ridder, I know...) I think we'll see some awesome deliveries fired into the box from Soares this season. Better deliveries would play to Pelle's strengths. I think Soares will finish the season with 10+ assists.

You're right MLG. This forum would work much better with a series of numbered threads, by squad number. Because conversations never stray off topic we could simply discuss the merits of each player and then get on with more important jobs like doing the ironing.

Oh, wait. Soares doesn't have a squad number yet. That won't work... Anyway, does anything want a friendly sweepstake-style 'bet' on how many assists he'll get. I'm going with 11

What do you do for a living MLG? Just curious... Am I mixing you up with someone else? Do you have something to do with Football Manager?h

MLG isn't a person, it's a computer program. I believe it was written by one of stevegrant's ex team-mates who was a computer wizz, so that the forum could be more factually accurate. It appears to be becoming outdated and tedious however.

At the risk of sounding like a bed wetter, I have spoken to a fair few Portuguese/Sporting fans about Cedric and they have all suggested that he is mediocre. The worst claim was that he was mid-table championship quality. The best that he would do the job passably, just not to the same standard as Clyne. I for one will reserve judgement until he's in a Saints shirt, the fibres of which seem to have a rejuvenating effect e.g. Lovren.

I've never watched the guy play so can't claim to have any sort of informed view myself but I find it hard to believe that the Portuguese national right back is no better than, for example, Danny Fox.

Uh-oh, last time I heard such a damning indictment of a signing was Ajax fans saying Jelle van Damme was "clumsy" when I spoke to them at Euro 2004 just after we signed him.

They weren't wrong. He also loved a hoof.

As for Lovren, that's not the shirt, that's Fonte organising. I'd have him back in a second, provided he was dirt cheap. He could be the new Kevin Davies. :D

Wasn't it only recently our own fans who described Mane as league 1 level?

Football fans aren't always the best judge (especially of players who have just dumped their club for someone else)

You'd like to think our recruitment department could spot the difference between a pl capable player and one that is mid table champ standard.

Very well rounded football fans, these Portuguese, in that they can describe a player that they have only seen play in the Portuguese top division as of 'mid table English second tier' quality. Impressive.

  • 1 month later...

Needs time to adapt. We also missed the 3 central midfielder playing slightly forward who would chase back. Normally Davis or JWP. This left the full backs exposed as Davis/vic had no cover for themselves and couldn't go into the full back positions
