derby v. man united - some contrast with us

With Saints not playing until Sunday, I took the opportunity to watch my local club, Forest Green outplay Derby on Saturday (even thought they eventualy lost 3-4). Derby were awful and I was thinking that Saints would have beaten them quite easily (as they have already done this season). They are as much relegation candidates as we are.

Doesn't seem much difference between the two United sides to me.

giggs, berbatov, neville, carrick out but tevez, scholes, rafael in - possibly slightly weaker tonight, though they're introducing the big guns. Even against united, simply doing the basic stuff right -being organised and closing them down - makes a difference.

even blyth spartans managed to get 2 corners against blackburn rovers (non-league v premier league lets not forget)

we couldn't even muster up 1 sodding corner at home to man utd.

i think gillingham also gave premier league aston villa a hard time also.

i am still hurting from sundays complete lack of effort and passion. and don't start blaming the ref, yes he was awful but we never looked like we had any game plan whatsoever

Not at the moment they're not... Derby winning 1-0 with 2 mins to go against a stronger Man Utd side than we faced!

Amazing what a managerial change can do!

and 10 men! makes bit of difference when chasing a game against world champions!

Not sure we quite lived up to the verb 'chase' to be fair...

chase 1 (chamacr.gifs)v. chased, chas·ing, chas·es

v.tr.1. To follow rapidly in order to catch or overtake; pursue

referee or no ref on anyones side...the lack of application we showed was a disgrace and it is both sad and pathetic that some are making excuses..

derby have just beaten man utd..!!!!

Yep but it is a 2 leg game as I recall....

Mind you still no excuse you're right

You cant but compare can you.

It makes our performance & result look a lot worse now.

Geeez even when you try & look for a positive it is almost impossible.

We really are a shower of sh1t.

Or, alternatively, we were so good that we ran Man Utd ragged thus making them ill equiped to face Derby 3 days later...

Derby did Man U fair and square - but how that relates to our game against them is beyond me. Football is full of surprises, didn't see many people predicting we would go to Reading and win, look at the teams that Burnley have taken out in their cup run.

There are loads of 'one off' surprises that you can quote - but in the grand scheme of things trying to compare individual games and point to form is pretty fruitless. For us it matters only about what we do between now and the end of the season - shove Derby...!!

But it just emphasises that other "so called" relegation contenders can get a result by some hard work and a degree of nounce. Whereas we have neither and our clueless management just stumble from one game to the next making the same crass mistakes. Face it we are f**ked and prepare yourself for Div 3.

Just an observation, but you're comparing and contrasting results/outcomes.

(Most) other people are comparing the effort and desire of Saints compared to these other sides.

I agree with you entirely. Up to now, from what I have seen, we look pretty clueless in all departments less KD (thank god).

But comparing one game is unrealistic - we now have 20 to get our asses in gear and sort this season out - otherwise the outcome could well be catastrophic for this club.

you love your excuses don't you nick! i suppose you were happy with sunday's performance then?

didn't expect much more and think we have played worse, with 11 players, against much worse teams.

Think criticisms are bit ott in circs (for Saturday not the season) thought we did chase and didn't do too bad before sending off. We would have still been easily beaten

So... a struggling Championship side could never beat Man Utd??

Fight, grit, spirit, passion, determination - and a bit of sublime skill - and there you have it, struggling Derby beat the mighty Man United. Well I never...

Mind, must have helped with the feelgood factor of the new manager looking on, as well as of course trying to impress him (oh, and a board who clearly have a bit of a vision and the balls to act when needed).

Rupert, Jan... were you watching?

(cue the apologists again - lucky Derby, United tired, waiting for 2nd leg etc. etc.).

Observation noted - and agreed - Derby worked bloody hard for their result. We appear to like to 'knock it about a bit in midfield' (tippy tappy as Alpine would say) but we don't want to be sweating over our nice clean shirts.

After our game, somebody on here suggested that we need Robbie Savage to 'add some steele' to our midfield and I thought 'Shyte - no way do I want that clogger in red and white...' Look who came on for Derby tonight - shucks, what do I know...!!!

and you think Jan is the man to do that do you?

I don't believe I said that - strangely though, I have always felt that a certain Nigel Clough might do well at a higher level. I wonder if he is available.... doooh maybe not now....

Nope you can't but compare and to think we beat Derby away earlier in the season, it's a funny old game.

Yes but Nick... going down to 10 men was our fault!

Where does 'our' come into this? Did the coach tell Patterson to make reckless challenges at every opportunity, or was it just a rash moment by a player who was trying just a bit too hard? What is the point of trying to blame every action by individual players on 'the club'! Fact is until Patterson went off, Saints were holding their own, playing some good football and looked as likely to score as Utd. The sending off was a tragedy for Matthew who clearly did not intend any malice and was devestated by the decision, which rightly or wrongly ended the game as a contest and rendered the rest of the match meaningless.

we had ten men we had ten men we had ten men we had ten men we had ten men

plus i think most the man utd players care a lot more about the fa cup.

plus teams have good and bad days. we can be better, we can be worse, as can they, as can derby.

That's right, that's right, keep repeating, it's all just down to luck, it'll all come good, that's the ticket, good, good...

See you in League 1...

we played a team, who have just beaten the world champions, off the park -beating them away (23rd Aug), this shows we are a truly great side.

Derby played a good game tonight, in comparison last Sunday we were never going score in a million years. The fact it was embarrasing at the end when Rooney & co were not taking the shot but trying to get Anderson his first goal for the club. Their was no battling or fight. All we did was pass the ball around and tried to look nice on the ball.

Anyone who says the comparison is meaningless is living in dreamland. We were looking for something -- anything -- to make us feel a little bit proud of this season, and we didn't get it against Utd. How good do you think Derby fans feel today (and they won't forget that feeling even if they get tonked 5-0 in the 2nd leg).

What is the single high point of the season so far -- probably DMG's winner against Preston.

Most of the time it's been unremittingly grim. Not a criticism, just the real world.

If Rupert is going to post on here, then you would like to think he would disguise himself better;).

As likely to score, you're having a giraffe!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Sorry, just noticed Benjiii has already taken Rupe's to task)
