You could normally just put a traffic cone in charge of Celtic or Rangers and it would still be nailed on for a second place finish....although RM does look like he may buck that particular trend!

He finished 4th in a 3 horse race with us so he has form

I think it's clear that Martin is navigating a tricky start to life up north. One thing is for certain is that the dressing room is on his side, even if they've been on the end of some tough love in his post match interviews. He's only one emphatic win against St Mirren away from getting the fans back on side. Throw in a stirring comeback against Bruges and Rangers will be sitting pretty for their first Old Firm game this season.

Worth noting that everyone had bumps into in Glasgow has been really supportive.

He must be wandering around Partick , don’t think he’d find the same support in Govan.

He’s a right fucking suck up isn’t he? Kevin is very supportive, fucking creep. Much prefer Ivan’s method of managing up. Chinning the boss.

Fucking deluded….

One thing that's come out of his new job is I'm watching a lot more Scottish football than I used to. Which I'm not sure is a good or a bad thing.

He's 'Doing a Bournemouth' today.

No strikers in the starting 11.

WWPD what would Pep do? Obviously Pep never had a player to handle the front sweeper pie hero role like Rothwell but it's almost like watching Man City at times.

Just go up the local park on a Sunday afternoon, about the same level.

And normally I'd agree. But the park doesn't allow me to watch another long term process unravel before my eyes.

Reading the Rangers forum they're all really calm about how this is just part of changing the culture at the club and part of a bigger process that's going to deliver the football they crave to Ibrox.

St Mirren really need a second here before the whistle. Half time team talks are a Martin specialty where he has the chance to completely change the shape of the game.

2 passes and unlocked.

A good goal from St Mirren. But they know how Martin sets up. Martin's team have spent much of the half moving it about to get St Mirren to move. But they've had little central transition with it. The Buddies are stronger and more direct on the break. They just waited for Martin's team to overcommit, and punished them.

Once again, possession hasn't resulted in chances. Nor has it stopped the home side looking a threat.

There are 8 new season signings for Rangers. They are brought in on a tight budget, and that shows.

On the plus side Meghoma looks a good loan deal. Although he's been involved in giving it away a couple of times, he's more than compensated for being Rangers' outlet. He linked up well with Gassama. St Mirren responded with tackling the spark out of Gassama, and then targeting Meghoma.

Cameron had a good chance and The St Mirren keeper clawed away a ball that was going over the line. But the home support sense that momentum that Martin has no time for. One day the pen y will drop on how it impacts his players. But not today, as St Mirren are bossing them about the midfield.

I like how to St Mirren goalie has caught the ball on a couple of occasions rather than punch or parry. Quite refreshing in this day and age, seems to be a dying trait.

Joe Rothwell is absolutely honking, would need about five of Russell's pre-seasons to get him anywhere near fit

As the Rangers fans noted "Joe Slothwell"

Away fans boos are drowning out the home fans at halftime.

Have to admire the burst of pace that took Martin down the tunnel away from them though. That's what a serious fitness regime gets you.

"Do as I say and one day you'll be just as fit as me boys. And all the people will love you."

Russell Martin, 24/8/25. St Mirren Park.

Obviously nowhere near the fittest man in Europe (tm) that is Nathan Jones.

There's a man that doesn't need the love of the people, just that one special girl from the valleys.

What Rangers fans probably haven't had a chance to appreciate yet is Martin's ability to ruthlessly see out a 1-0 defeat. So there's a chance to tick that box today.

If it stays like this you’d assume he’ll be throwing his players under the bus for not getting it

That's what happens when you are not being brave.

I’m actually surprised how badly it’s going. Assumed he’d get away with it for a bit as Rangers players should in theory be much better but my god they’re bad.

I’d laugh but I watched saints yesterday.

Where everything came in from the wide areas and it is was the strikers that let us down?
