Former Premier League referee Mike Dean says he used to set himself mini-challenges during matches "as a laugh".

Appearing on Jamie Vardy's podcast, Dean said he would see how long he could go without blowing his whistle, or stay inside the centre circle.

"We used to say 'we'll kick off now. Right, see how long we can go without blowing a whistle'," Dean said.

"I've done that a few times in the Premier League, before VAR obviously - went 20, 25 minutes without blowing a whistle.

 

That's rather interesting. I wonder if he was indulging in one of his little mini games whilst being a part of the refereeing in both 9-nils we suffered.

A disgrace of a person, I recall when he said he didnt call a VAR decision as he didnt want to show up his friend Taylor. Why hes allowed to be on Sky is amazing, hopefully hese revelations get him fired

Retired which is why he feels he can say it. Other former referees calling his stories bullshit.

I can believe it. A friend used to know Graham Poll who was apparently open about deliberately making controversial decisions in order to put himself in the spotlight and further his career.

He formulated that particular wheeze from Mrs Dean, who used to see how much micro Mike she could endure before laughing or falling asleep. Her record was 25 seconds.

You just know this egomaniac has an autobiography in him where hopefully he’ll cut his own throat. Those two 9 goal games, particularly United, were very suspect, a bit more scrutiny needs to be given to potential betting scams.

If a football club can take direct action over a rivals PSR spending breeches (Burnley/Everton), then there will surely be clubs looking at the impropriety of the referee's behaviour during a season where they where relegated with a small points margin.

We live in the now retroactive punishment day and age. I think there's a serious case here. Just imagine you find the game where he hasn't blown for a foul in the first ten minutes, even when there's obvious infringements. And then it turns out to be, lets say Swansea V Southampton 2018. Just imagine how you would feel losing that game, and then subsequently realising the ref was 'playing a game' to amuse himself. I'm really struggling to get my head round this.

If nothing else, I hope it ends his little limelight shit show. But I think this needs looking into. Hopefully Middlesborough are involved.

I just read back though the match thread for the Utd game to refresh my memory on the refereeing decisions and, yep, the whole thread is peppered with reactions to 'suspect' decisions. The goal we were denied when 'only' 4 nil down was particularly dodgy IMO...

Only fair to have the result changed to a default 3-0, if not entirely expunged from the records. Now, who was ref for the Leicester game...

He used to take great delight in defeating the teams he didn't like, including Arsenal and Saints. He also had favourite teams he helped win, like Man United and Spurs.  He openly celebrated a Spurs goal. You could tell from which goal he faced most of the game which team he wanted to win and it was never Saints. If the team he wanted to lose was attacking, he'd stay still, waiting for his preferred team's next attack, which he would join in. One of his little games was pretending he was part of one of the teams. That 9-0 defeat to Man United was engineered by him and he delighted in it.

Saints knew what he was doing. " Southampton appealed the red card issued to Bednarek, which was subsequently rescinded by The Football Association. Southampton also requested that Mike Dean and Lee Mason (4th official) not officiate their future fixtures."

Arsenal knew about it too:

 

There is no way he could be considered unbiased or fair. It's shocking that he was allowed to get away with it for as long as he did.

One of Mr Dean's very worst decisions was away at Watford in April 2019 (the Shane Long game). Right at the very end Redmond was heading through on goal when he was tripped by a Watford player who had already been booked. Dean had his whistle in his mouth to blow for the foul. Realised he would have to show a red card and then waved play on.

A tragic figure who deliberately courts hatred and ridicule because he knows it’s the only way he can get attention and that otherwise he’s completely and utterly irrelevant. 

I can’t even see how his claims can be true, which just makes it even sadder. A referee not blowing their whistle for 20-25 minutes in a top flight professional match? It’s not even a credible lie. He’s a fantasist, bullshitting to try and impress the cool kids. Just another cringeworthy act from a truly pathetic little man.
