Seeing as we are reminiscing

Well all the obvious ones like those mentioned, Dellhurst etc. But for the drama, passion and intensity of fantastic endings to games, ones that spring to mind...

Home to Villa, probably early 80s, 2-down late in the match and got it back to 2-2, just remember the noise as the whole place roared them on.

Also, Bally's days as manager, Newcastle at home midweek, again, first the Archers (we never sat down again after that) and then the entire ground shaking the Geordies into submission.

And probably the loudest I've ever experienced, and I've been all over, was the end of a spikey Leeds game and the noise just kept building to a crescendo and "Come on you Reds..." roared as it used to be (not the limp-wristed way it's done these days) that made yer ears bleed!

'Appy days

League game has to be West ham away several years back, we were cruising and then pressed self destruct only to scrape by.

I was there too. We were 3-2 up and there was a pitch invasion. In the dressing room the players knew the results from the other games and a that a draw would be enough to keep us up. I am 'led to believe' that there was an understanding that we would concede a goal and everybody would run like mad for the tunnel. Then Ken stuck the best header he had ever made into the bottom left corner of our goal, and the rest is history.

IIRC, allegedly.

West ham away SU home FA cup 76. The tension of the Wimbledon home 0-0 when Mancity had pulled back from 2 down and Bally thought that was enough and so told them to defend rather than go for a win. lol. That was the closest we ever got going down without doing so and should have really as we were dire.

1997 last game against Villa we lost 1-0 but still managed to beat the drop, remember being interviewed on the local TV coming out of Villa Park, everyone was dressed up as Vikings.

I thought it was Mickey Evans sideburns

Some one else mentioned the biggest roar at The Dell, for me it was in 1966 promotion season 0-0 against Charlton a couple of minutes left , had to win to stay in hunt for promotion.

Chivers bursts down the right wing from the half way line, crosses into the box, Paine slides it into the net, the place went mad i was 12 and that noise has stayed with me for ever.

1984 - a Thursday evening in May away at Notts County. Standing on open terrace in the evening sunshine knowing that I was about to see the best Saints team in history takes runners up spot. We romped to an easy 3-1 win thanks to Steve Moran and David Armstrong. I never wanted that game to end as it felt like it would never be so good again.

I'm sure matty scored 2 and dowie the other? matty scored one of his trademark free kicks , brilliant goal.

That pitch invasion was strange, prompted i think by our mini pitch invasion after a couple of goals , the west ham fans ran up to our end...to applaud us :o

The atmosphere amonsgt the saints fans was memorable, when i walked in the ground 5 minutes before kick off the whole end was singing alan balls red and white army, and continued for most of the game.

I was there too; pitch was like a sandy beach....happy days. Ran on at the end and asked Shilton for his gloves but he said he needed them - tight b@stard!!

One of my favourites other than those already mentioned was Oldham away in 93, which saw about 2500 Saints fan celebrating an Oldham goal. Well actually we were celebrating West Ham scoring against Cambridge to ensure that it was they that went up and not the skates, but it was about 15 seconds after Oldham had just scored one of their four goals so it looked like we had gone totally mad. It was Benali day as I recall.

Great day that. Lots of Saints fans ****ed on cheap northern beer. Saints and Oldham fans celebrating together with 'we hate pompey' banner. Lots of confused locals wondering why saints fans were wearing arab head dress and seeing a Le Tiss hat trick.

I loved the year we stayed up and Man City went down.

I mean, i didn't love the match, it was horrible. In all the seasons of scrapes that we've had, that season was probably the most tense all the way through the 90 mins. Even more than last season. I may well be wrong but Dave Merrington looked round in the dug out as he had a gasp (as Man City equalised) and stuck my fingers up to say 2-2 (not flicking the V's). He put his thumbs up and turned round. I'm sure it wasn't at me, but i like to think so. Back in the day's of the family centre behind the dug out at the Dell. God that game was rubbish. Wimbledon games always were. I remember Richard Hall having an absolute stinker as well.

70's Mike, the first game I ever saw was Saints v Charlton and Saints won one nil from a Paine penalty and I thought this was in 1966. Am I thinking of a different game? I recall going to the Dell to play Man City the season we went up in 1966 or 67. It's too long ago. Great days indeed.

A few memorable endings to recent seasons:

2008 - Coming from behind to beat Sheff Utd and stay up. Beattie putting a hattrick past Leicester a few weeks earlier, then geting injured for our game made it extra sweet.

2007 - Rasiak scoring in the last minute against Derby.

2006 - Not the most memorable game (2-0 win over Leicester) but Marian's lap of honour had half the stadium in tears.

2005 - It all went tits up in the end, but come on, we all went mental when Norwich conceded and we scored a minute later.

2003 - The FA Cup Final and in the League ruining Man City's last game at Maine Road after they'd shafted us with the ticket allocation. Killer's goal was the difference between 8th and 11th in the League and pretty much paid for his transfer on it's own.

2001 - Fitting end to the Dell. Beating Man Utd and Arse in consecutive games.

1999 - Marian Pahars!

Well, that's as far back as my noggin goes.

v Newcastle in....2004? Blayney pulls off a wonder save against Shearer. Brilliant game and we stopped them from getting in the UEFA cup.

Blimey, good shout. I'd forgotton that one.

Great game, magnificent performance with a young, injury-hit team, that showed what a great influence Sturrock was having.

Thanks Rupert!!

Weren't we 3-2 up at the time? One of Matt's was a penalty. Ken's was an own goal to make it 3-3. That was the strange thing about it. It was down at the far end and a cross went into the box from our right and Ken put a brilliant header down inside our left post. I later heard from someone who said he was at a do that evening with the players that, let's just say, they would be happy with a draw. I know that the first invasion came with less than 3 minutes on the clock and I remember thinking that if the game were to be abandonded then the result would stand and we would be ok.

DEFINITELY a different game, Man City was the first home game we played as a 1st division team , a bit of an anti climax because they had come up with us, Paine scored in that one too.

The Charlton game was 30 April 1966 and the goal was definitely not a penalty

Neil Maddison headed the 2nd from a Tiss cross. I remember the Monkou o.g was as a result of a foul by Lee (wife beater) Chapman and the ref was too scared to disallow it due to the W. Ham fans pouring onto the pitch.

They were standing on the North Bank terracing for the last time before it went for the current all seater.

The game wasn't great but Happy memories of a great day.

!978 The north London yobs remember they put a s**ty fence up which Spurs fans ripped to pieces, Brighton had finished there fixture's & needed us to beat Spurs for them to go up with us. Seem to remember It was a real Sh**y game 0-0 might have just blown for full time at 3.0pm as no one really tried it was just 90-mins untill we could all get on the pitch & celebrate, including Spurs fans. seem to remember both sets of players in the directors box together as well. What a great party afterwards though.

Remember stood under the West Stand a roumour went round about 10-mins from the end that Bolton were loosing & we all started chanting Champions like T**ts for 5-mins untill we found out it was a load of Bo**ocks.

Don't forget Mike Channons Testimonial After the Cup Final, Now that was a GREAT last game.

I was with them, as I couldn't get a ticket for the saints end, my cousin is a hammers fan, so got me a ticket with him and his friends. Then proceeded to tell everyone around us that I was a Saints fan when we got on the terrace. I remember going mental when we scored our goals, and how I wanted to be in with the rest of you celebrating, especially as I was getting some very nasty looks from the hammers fans around me.

I was so disappointed when Ken scored that og, and seem to remember thinking that we were going down, until hearing that Sheff Utd hadn't got a result against Chelsea.

All the other games had finished before the game restated after the pitch invasion, so the late equaliser was irrelevant.
