Solent United - Hypothetical Musing

Now, I know this will never happen. Too many connotations and factors make this idea practically possible but out of interest, I would love to know how everyone on here would feel about something like this, if it was a viable and real alternative or option.

For example, what if both fans from both sides 'accepted' this? Saints' and Pompey's collective debt was written off/paid off for whatever reasons on the basis that we merge.

And so, Solent United is formed.

What if a new ground was built between the cities, where would it be? How many should it hold intially? What is the potential for a 'superclub' to rival the Premier Leagues biggest? Would players want to play and live in this part of the UK as opposed to the North? Just how much potential would this club realistically? What would the home and away kits be? Would the youth system have a bigger and better pool of players to choose from in the surrounding areas?

Now, I would love a summary or hypothetical response from anyone who has wondered this before? Yes, it's practically impossible for this to happen but what if it wasn't - and it happened? Solent United ... what is their potential?

I'm curious to see what other people think.... I'll begin.

I suppose Fareham way would be the obvious candidate for a new ground, with links both ways close to the motorway... capacity? For starters, probably 40,000-45,000 with room for expansion if need be. Giving the right backing and with the club being based close to London, having excellent international transport links and having beautiful surrounding areas, I don't see why any player wouldn't want to play for SU, given the right backing and vision etc.

I think the best thing about this is John PFC Westwood certainly wouldn't approve so at least we'd be rid of him and that ****ing cowbell...

With the right backing?

What planet are you from?

I think what needs to be remembered is if this happened it would be because a new club was formed AFTER the loss of both Saints and Pompey as we know them - so less of 'union' more a new club - I could possibly give it a go under those circumstances as long as Westwood was banned or had to have the bell stuffed up his rectum for teh entire match duration.

It all rather reminds me of the "Solent City" idea which was talked about in the late 60's.

Supposedly this was to be built by filling in the space between Southampton and Portsmouth creating a massive conurbation.

Therefore I propose that this merged club be called Solent City - as, let's face it, if it happened we'd never be united.

Here's one hypothetical response...

...and here's another one.

The consensus was they were both sh !t ideas and that it would be better for Saints to go out of business....

Mmm, to be fair the first one was argued in November, circumstances have taken a bit of a downturn since then and people are gradually starting to realise than half a plastic club might be better than none at all.

But 50 years ago alot of people went to watch both clubs. I expect after how many years then the rivalry would kinda die out.

I support Hampshire at cricket and have never had real hatred of Pompey. If there was no saints Id understand this in principle. I suggest there woud be real stick from both sides but the more braod minded fans from both areas would not worry, but there just wouldnt be enough of them.

In the Solent City story on the saints web site, it laid out a good idea of this happeneing, to challenge in the PL we would need a couple of hundred million and I would suggest that SMS is used until a bigger middle ground could be built, would solve a lot of Pompeys problems, as for the rivalry I have always felt Pompey hate us more than we hate them.

I wouldn't oppose it as an idea. As I have said before a lot of my best friends are Pompey fans as I have always lived slightly closer to Portsmouth than Southampton, so it would be good to see games with them

Pointless thread.

If Saints go bust we start Southampton 1885 FC in the Wessex league. And no doubt the blue bit of Hampshire would start Portsmyth Skates FC in the event of bankrupcy.

Supporting your local club is about community. Portsmouth is not my community.

I agree, it will result in three clubs, two new clubs that represent their cities and a new plastic club that means **** all to anyone other that those who are embarressed to support a team outside of the prem.

I would give the new club five years before it folded and five years before Southampton 1885 were back in the league. It may be quite good fun racing the Portsmouth 1898 back to the league.

I worked with a bloke who was ****ed of about the merger that formed Dagenham & Redbridge, so I can only imagine the aggro that the plastic club would cause.

Hehe, I know it'll never happen, but imagine how much a solent city team would be feared, where the fans have more banter between themselves and are always up for each match, with the away fans practically ignored and a crucible of noise intimidating the opposition.

Will never happen though, and would probably never work either.
