Matt Le Tissier

Without wishing to be premature, if this all comes off then, judging by Tony Lynam's letter, it will be in large part down to the belief, steadfastness, dependability and hard work of Matt Le Tissier.

I was extremely fortunate to be just the right age to start supporting Saints as Matt was emerging.

For me, and I'm sure a lot of others, nearly all my fondest memories of Saints involve Matt Le Tiss - we haven't had a player that can come anwyhere near to him for service to the club and entertaining the fans since and we probably never will again.

Now, it seems he's played a major role in our survival.

Matt, thanks for the goals, thanks for the memories, thanks for the future.

Agree, he appears to be sacrificing a good TV career for us. Can't believe how the tide is turning, just hope we get a good healthy support, good gates will be important for our future and to counteract the other big teams in this division, Norwich, Leeds and Charlton for starters.

We should re-name a stand the Matt le Tissier stand, if not the ground.

Take a bow Matt.

just was going to agressively disagree with your stand renaming suggestion, then re-read it and noticed the second part! Totally agree, The Matt Le Tiss stadium.

Well he was Le God already and I'm not sure there is a vacancy above that title :-)

Thankyou Matt, for everything. Your contribution to this club rivals that of Ted Bates and I for one hope you're here for another 50 years, just like he was...

No. Not yet. One day, definitely, but the job has only just started. We are only at the beginning of a very long road, and begin next season minus 10 points, don't forget. Our squad is not yet really suitable for the League 1 hustle and bustle and needs to be rebuilt. We are going to have to weather many more upsets before we claw our way back to the Championship. And inevitably Matt will get lottsa crit from us fickle fans along the way. As Ted Bates did when things didn't go well.

So one step at a time.

Meanwhile though a great big thank you, Matt!

I have proposed that we should consider having a bronze statue done of MLT. It should be placed by the Players Entrance at the front of SMS - a bust would do for now, to be upgraded to full statue on our return to the Premiership! - and it should have 'LOYALTY' engraved on the plinth so that each player when he arrives at SMS sees it and has it drilled into him that there are greater accolades to be had than just chasing cash in football.

When this deal goes through and Saints are officially saved... maybe Leon Crouch and the Ted Bates Statue Committee may consider leading the work for such an honour to him, a la the second TB statue.

I cant see this happening tbh. Assuming Matt becomes chairman, wouldnt it be partly his decision to do something like that? I really think he would be too modest to suggest or agree that he should have any sort of statue/plinth made in recognition to himself.

He will get a statue at some point, no question. But IMO it wont happen for some time.

I agree with you.

But, thats why I am suggesting it on here and for LC and the remainder of the TB Statue Committee to consider taking on such a proposal. I and they are neutrals.

I would not expect MLT to ask for it, he wouldnt. But I think we as fans would love it, and if it served a motivational purpose too for our players...underpinning a new club ethos of loyalty to the shirt... hey why not? Lets ask him and do it! He has saved this club, regardless of the many future successes (which I am sure there will be) or not of the new owner(s).

Glad to see that Uncle Leon is still wanted.....I hope that both he and Anthony Salz will be a part of this football club for many years to come....Credit being bandied about by some...It is heroes like MLT, Leon, Anthony and Ottery that are real Saints.

Before you ask I have been down that church praying everyday for Lynam and Co....I have turned into a Saint in more ways than one.....Not much of the old hooch left in the locker...The religous one keeps asking where his wine has vanished toooooo.

COYRs.

LOL.

This has been on my mind for the last day or two aswell. Although he clearly deserves a promotion from being mere God now I'm not sure where you go from there?

Definately all sides of the ground should be named after him although this may cause confusion when booking tickets. A statue in the middle of town. All street names to be changed to honour him ("Le Tiss Avenue", "MLT Road", "Matt's Place" etc etc).

Maybe Hampshire should be Letissiershire?

Nope, you're right, promotion from God is hard - maybe we should just worship more?

Maybe you might consider that Matt would feel very uncomfortable/embarrassed having to walk past a statue of himself on his way into the office every day. (Assuming he has such a role at SFC that would require this).

As has been said...the time will come, but not for some years yet.

I remember the old days when Matt would be doing his own thing during the warm ups for matches. Basically strolling around and kicking the ball over the bar into the stands. Very happy times indeed. I do hope we see him on the pitch before games. He is still my hero and i worship the ground he walks on.

As a slight aside, has Matt confirmed yet whether he will be leaving Soccer Saturday? Would be a shame if so, especially if Sky replace him with another crusty old Northerner who used to play for Liverpool.

It would as he is great on there and I love the reparte between him and Jeff Stelling et al, in fact I watch it more for that than the footie! That said if it comes down to it there really is only one place for Matty and that is St Mary's. He truly is up their with the all time greats including dear old Ted Bates and I don't think I can pay a higher compiment than that !

Having travelled pretty extensively in my working life, you cannot believe how many people around the world associate the city of Southampton with the name 'Le Tissier' !

I met people in Asia (I specifically remember China, Malaysia and the Phillipines) who, when I mentioned I was a Saints fan (and without prompting) responded immediately with simply, 'Matthew Le Tissier' !

My French colleague even tried to claim that he was more theirs than ours (no higher accolade is possible from a Parisian !).

I do hope that in my lifetime I see his contribution to SFC recognised in some meaningful way !

When I see some of the arseholes in politics, business etc.. who get awards for so called 'public service' it pales into insignificance to what he has done for our sport in the south of England !

Stelling is a legend. I just love some of his quotes on Soccer Saturday. I watch it for that more than the football too. It will be a shame to miss out on Saints vs Hartlepool for the first time on there.

"They'll be dancing in the streets of Total Network Solutions" Every time they took the lead.

"Kevin Webster has scored, Sally will be pleased"

"I feel good" every time James Brown scores.

Deportivo Gijon (Pronounced 'hee haw')

"Beevers has been booked... must have been fighting."

Oh I think if the bookies would take a bet on a statue of Le Tiss being built take any odds they'll give you !

No, just Leon Crouch please... No committees, or fans getting involved... we all know what happened last time.

Once the takeover has happened we do really need to find a way to honour MLT.

I think the best way of doing that is turning up in our droves for every game - there's no reason why we can't be the best supported team in this division (yes, even with Leeds in it - whose fans must be getting somewhat disillusioned).

In short, we need to repay the faith Matt has shown, and the hope he's given us, by ensuring they get a return on their investment through the turnstiles.
