OldNick Posted 21 July, 2009 Author Share Posted 21 July, 2009 (edited) back from the game and it was pathetic all round.Less than 20 in the away fans section! I dont like knocking the players but Poke is not /will not be a L1 standard keeper, lancashire was out fought and jumped by Salisburys Robbie matthews (scored hattrick) 3 down half time and could have been more.We had no attempts on target first half.Although we did miss 2 sitters both missing the goal.Saga will not score many , Stern looked full of effort and was a plus on the night.Perry Mills Paterson and Stern the only players who can hold their heads up IMO. Wotton tried but poor, Gobern not in it, Thomson at his level, even Lloyd was not up to it tonight. Henderson on the touchline first half AP out with him in the second where we started to look more up for it, especially when Paterson came on for the ineffectual Saga. All of a sudden hustle and bustle helping Stern.A fortunate pen, by Wotton pulled 1 back, then Paterson before another high ball gave salisbury another 2 goal lead. Mills and Stern then brought us back to 4 all before Rob Sinclair netted the winner. We didnt look like scoring another. Forecast did ok second half but the defence is appalling. The acadamy players came on for the last few minutes so dont have any illusions that we were mainly a youth side on the night. It was comical, and salisbury deserved their win. I saw us play here last season under Jan and we looked a lot better then with a lot of kids, a long hard scary ride if things dont improve for us Im afraid. Warm up games tell you nothing. That is fair, but it is the lack of a midfield, with no guile or energy. Pulis played in midfield with Gobern Wotton and Thomson. Gillette was in the stands with Wayne Thomas. Im not pretending we were full strength but Salisbury bossed the game except for 20 minutes in the second half. It cannot be good for morale. Anyway we will improve nad htis can be ofrgotten

saintsmike25 Posted 21 July, 2009 Share Posted 21 July, 2009 Thats the equilivant of when we struggled against a league one side when we were in the premiership or a league two side when we were in the CCC. It's a bit silly to read too much into things, Pardew needs to look where we need to improve and deadwood these games are fantastic for that reason. Strengthen the area's which need to be strengthened no doubt if we had confidently beaten Salisbury then we'd think "fine no need to change things". I'm not reading too much into things, we have 4 goalkeepers and if we don't need Poke we could easily sell him. And frankly the likes of Wotton and Lancashire aren't very good (give credit for Wottons slide rule pass against Ajax) but thats about the only contribution I've ever seen him do. And Lancashire looks more suited to Wessex league level frankly. If Saga isn't up for it we don't need to keep him and his wages we can do better and get someone with a bit of pace I think our star might be Kayne Mcglaggon (sp) when he gets back he looked very good last year and will score goals if used this season. The9 Posted 21 July, 2009 Share Posted 21 July, 2009 Three goalkeepers in that list... Yes, none of them Poke, leaving 8 outfield players and Davis. Plus one keeper to be named in the squad on match days. That'll be the ten. With the exception of possibly Rasiak all of them are likely to start fairly often. The OS hasn't even got this listed as a proper friendly, it's a Saints XI after all.

There are plenty of players that are trying very hard at the moment, such as Lanhashire, Wotton, Forecast, the everton left back, etc. Unfortunately, those players are the ones that shouldn't be on the pitch or with the Saints. dubai_phil Posted 21 July, 2009 Share Posted 21 July, 2009 Good news, strengthens the case for the return of the dream team of nickh & D P Seriously though, sounds like they didn't have a clue, which COULD (after the Pilchards thread) be a GOOD thing. Shake up the system, teach them new roles/style ie how to actually PLAY football and then they get a kicking on the pitch. All part of change management - let them see that their version of reality is actually different and why you are telling them to do things differently. Expect a lot of lessons learnt tonight, agents being told to find their men new clubs tomorrow it's only pre-season - straws clutch etc

Team was: --------------Poke------------- James--Perry--Lancashire--Mills Thomson--Wotton--Pulis--Gobern ----------Saga-----John--------- As said above Stern played quite well Saga looked dis-interested. Pulis and Wotton did the same job.....holding in front of defence (Neither did that too well!!). Mills was ok. Perry Solid as usual. Thomson and Gobern not involved although Gobern was better when he went in the centre of midfield. I usually like Poke but he was bad tonight especially dealing with crosses. Forecast I don't rate but didn't have much too do. Paterson was good tonight looked hungry when he came on.

the boy from saints Posted 21 July, 2009 Share Posted 21 July, 2009 To be fair it would have been a different result with Kelvin, Thomas, Gillet, and Rasiak playing.
