Pilchards Posted 27 July, 2009 Share Posted 27 July, 2009 Why is it taking so long to bring in his back staff and a couple of players? The longer it goes on the more I'm worried Pardew is operating on a mean budget as he needs to sell Saga, Rasiak etc before bringing in new faces. Might get slated for my patience but I bet many share it with me!

Alanh Posted 27 July, 2009 Share Posted 27 July, 2009 Holidays? Are they currently employed elsewhere so negotiations have to take place? Has he not made his mind up yet? Is he assessing who he should keep from the current set up? All plausible reasons. Some managers have their assistants run round after them and get appointed at the same time - Sven and Tord Grip, WGS and Gary Pendry etc, but AP obviously doesn't. I'm sure he's working on it but he's only been at the club for 2 weeks and having assessed the squad probably now has a better idea of who he needs to bring in. I reckon we'll get an announcement before the end of this week.

John D Posted 27 July, 2009 Share Posted 27 July, 2009 The time to judge is the 31 Aug when the transfer window has shut. Don't forget pardew needs to spend time with the squad to decide what the strengths / weaknesses are of the current players and decide how best to spend his budget (fees/wages). He has only had a handful of training sessions so far. Wage negotiations, trf fee negotiations, sizing up mental attitude of new players, deciding whether to spend x on player 1 and y on player 2 versues x&y on player 3 etc.... It all takes time. what is encouraging is Pardew admitting that there will be players coming in. if he said he was happy with current squad then I would be concerned. I would rather he spends 4 weeks on getting the right players in rather than rushing out today and blowing the whole budget on 3-4 players who turn out to be the wrong players just to appease impatient fans I would expect to see some backroom staff in place within next few days and then see players thereafter. krissyboy31 Posted 27 July, 2009 Share Posted 27 July, 2009 The time to judge is the 31 Aug when the transfer window has shut. . Remember, loans can be signed well after the transfer window closure and some of the better targets may not become available until then because these players may not want to jeopardise the chance (slender as it might be) of a first-team start at their parent clubs. Might get slated for my patience but I bet many share it with me! We are always impatient for new signings during the close season, but even after we've signed new players we want more. I'm sure negotiations are in hand to bring in his backroom staff, and I'm also pretty sure that he is working to a limited budget, so that means it might take a little time to get the right players. He's only been here a dogwatch, he needs to identify the weaknesses, then bring in the players to strengthen. It won't happen overnight mate, so whilst I'm keen to see signings like you, I'm happy to be a little more patient than I would have been if Pardew had been here at the end of last season
Winchester Red Posted 27 July, 2009 Share Posted 27 July, 2009 It's a swiss / german thing..... Most boards will get an offer accepted for a player / coach / etc and leak it to the press, before 50% fall over. My guess is that 9 out of 10 transactions will not get out until they are complete. The other 1 out of 10 will be leaked by the other side. It's called professionalism. It's a big change but better get used to it

Wes Tender Posted 27 July, 2009 Share Posted 27 July, 2009 Dealing with the issue of Alan Pardew's backroom staff, pure conjecture from me as to the reason for the delay, if indeed it is accepted that there has been undue delay... Pardew lost his job at Charlton last November as far as I'm aware. Therefore he has been twiddling his thumbs metaphorically since then. Now as a reasonably successful manager in the top flight for some of his career, he must be reasonably well off financially. But what of his former backroom staff? They have probably gained employment elsewhere, have mortgages to pay, family settled, etc. If they are with other clubs, then negotiations with their current employers will take time, arrangements need to be made possibly to uproot from their current area. If those people are happy where they are, others will need to be approached. In that respect, the timescale since Pardew's arrival has not been long. SaintDonkey Posted 27 July, 2009 Share Posted 27 July, 2009 Personally I'd rather wait while AP get's the right team in place - which may involve negotiations with other clubs that we can do nothing to hurry along - than just go down the job centre and hire the first person with a coaching badge he sees there. It's a big change but better get used to it Weird then, that the official Bayern Munich website has articles about players that they are in negotiations for, before they have signed them from the other club. Pardew has already said he has identified the areas of the team where it is weak and changes need to be made, so he should be aware through the agents network which players are available for those positions and what their attributes are, and should also know the quality from the dross, even if it's only the free transfer players he's looking at for the time being. He already said that a lot of precious time had been wasted, in which he missed out on some players, so why is he missing out on others rather than acting to fill the gaps? If he doesn't make those changes by the end of the week, we'll be days away from a new league campaign with only half a team. God help us if Thomas gets injured next season, as playing Lancashire will be like having a further points penalty imposed on us. Pardews comments about it taking him a year to get a team playing as he wants them, are not exactly confidence boosting, especially as he has been set a tough target of a top six place by the board, which doesn't look like it's achievable at the moment with his words and actions. saintjay77 Posted 27 July, 2009 Share Posted 27 July, 2009 My guess is that now we are asking questions we will get some kind of press release within the next day or so. It seems that the PR company looking after saints now have guaged the fans opinions and acted pretty sharpish to make sure they are catered for. That doesnt mean that the club will rush into anything but I wouldnt be suprised if there was an update on how things are progressing to keep us in the loop. CanadaSaint Posted 27 July, 2009 Share Posted 27 July, 2009 We've tried throwing a load of sh*t against the wall and hoping some of it sticks. It didn't - during either the Redknapp or Burley eras. We've tried avoiding the transfer market in the belief that our kids could carry the load. They couldn't - at any point during the hideous Dutch experiment. What we haven't tried for quite some time is building a good system around the available talent and acting decisively to address weaknesses within financially acceptable parameters. The prerequisite for that is A) having a system that works, B) taking the time to figure out who fits within it and who doesn't, and C) establishing who wants to be here and who doesn't. A fair bit of that happened last week and at the weekend, and I'd expect the transfers to start arriving this week.
suewhistle Posted 27 July, 2009 Share Posted 27 July, 2009 I would presume that for the better players available on free transfer it's not like getting somebody from the job centre... "It pay's £6.57 an hour, do you want it, yes or no". There's a balance between our needs, budget and what some player is trying to hold out for. A bit of poker bluff involved. We've panicked before now into paying too much (wages or fees) but I have the feeling everything is now a bit more considered and professional. I'd certainly hope to see some movement this week though.

They tried to mix in the right blend of experience (wooton, perry and others) to compliment the youth. AP seems to want to do the same thing as the previous lot and by the sounds of it believes that the tallent is there but the mix has been wrong. I have no problem slating the last lot for getting things wrong but the ideas behind what they did are the same now as they were then. AP should at least be able to get more right as he is a much better manager than the previous 2 we have had. The hearts game suggests he has got something right and hopefully by the time we play Milwall we will be looking pretty strong.

To my mind, given the league we're in etc., if AP has someone better than Murty lined up, they'd have to be outstanding. I've not seen anything indicating Murty has been offered a contract, which is a bit strange given that he played Saturday - I thought insurance would be a problem without a contract?
