Saints Vs Brighton - Post Match Discussion

Completely pedestrian in defence and lazy on the ball.

We usually have enough touches of quality to win playing like that but this has been a lesson that we need to improve our patterns of play if we're going to make the play-offs! (We aren't going to make the play-offs).

They didnt turn up today! Not one of those players can say they played with any passion or desire to win! This winning mentality has made them overconfident and too big for their boots.

We will NOT make the play offs this year FACT. I know people will say 'oh but its only 1 game!'. Its a game that if you want to make the play offs you dont lose and dont play that badly.

It was cross-cross-cross-cross all evening. If there's no-one on the end or no-one who can get it on target to test the keeper, then change it up.

What happened to the free-flowing, passing footy of Wednesday night?

And at the back, we were too slow and out of position too many times.

not the same brand of football as midweek..... hoofed and punted.... CBs were dire in first 30mins which lost us the game.... midfield lacked urgency.... forwards didnt really move about much. V poor show today .. apart from Lallana who consistently tried to gather the ball na dd distribute..... poor...poor ..poor...

As I said at the time, we were pretty poor on Wednesday too.

Typical we had a chance to get off bottom of the league & we fooked it up at first attempt, now we have a chance to get out of the relegation zone and at our first attempt we fooked it up. Hopefully a good rollicking from Pards & extra training will sort it out.

Bad day at the office... put it down to that (and Lambert having flu or whatever he has) and move on. Brighton deserved it - quicker around the pitch, more tenacious in the tackle and some class finishing.

At least it will stop us fans (and hopefully players) getting complacent - lots of "5-0" predictions out there...

Come on now, i joined the game when we were 0-2 down. The game was totaly dominated by us and we played good, attcking posotive football. When ur 1-2 down a third goal on the break come's in it is going to punish us. But we battle'd , played good football.

When Papa came on he showed some good flashes of skill, maybe he should have come on earlier. Still, we one our last game with the team put out.

Up the Saints, a minor blip.

I think it shows how important a FIT Ricky Lambert is, as the cover isn't good enough to play in place of a half-fit one. And I think the gamble on Ricky is probably what cost us, as we didn't have any spark up front, making their CBs look better than they are, plus a normally questionable keeper decides he needs to impress his new boss.

Only good player out there today was Lallana, Antonio looked dangerous in the first half but petered out in the second half. Lloyd James put some good crosses in, but nobody attacked them, and his free-kicks and corners were p*ss poor.

The team really need a huge kick up the ar5e after today, we were completely abysmal.

That was poor. Over confident, and actually flat-footed too. Apart from the penalty, Lambert was invisible. Lallana got into quite a few positions ahead of Ricky and missed the chances.

Brighton came with a clean sheet as far as the players were concerned, and played as such. They believed and showed confidence. Well done to them. There's my positive bit.

You mean staying in this league, surely? That's the primary objective...

No it isn't. There is absolutely zero chance of us being relegated. Zero chance.

It's whether or not we make the play offs, and to be honest it's a long old slog but still possible.

Fair play to Brighton - they came & did a job and were worthy winners.

We appeared to have the attitiude of "Oh it's only lowly Brighton" and spent the first 45 mins in first gear. Far far too many hopeful balls lobbed into the box all game.

Back to the drawing board Pards...

I have no idea how we didn't win.

Our attackers' positioning was pretty poor, especially from set-pieces.

Antonio was good in the first half but ineffective when they doubled up on him in the second.

Our midfield was completely missing in the first 30 minutes.

Trotman played like a drunk.

Lambert looked knackered from the first minute.

Brighton played very well.

They worked out that Trottman and Jaidi are not the quickest and to be fair Brighton's movement up front was exceptional.

But all three goals would have been stopped by a defender doing what it says in the first line of every fecking training manual - STAYING GOAL SIDE...

This was a lesson in complacency.

Pardew even warned of it against Charlton.

Too many fancy dan performances I'm afraid.

at least this wake up will keep our players from thinking they could walk this league.

I don't think that has ever been the case, game plan for this season was to avoid relegation and consolidate our position, the play-offs were aspirational.

Let's do some ratings Saints fans:

KD 5 - Could have done better with second. Good save in the second half.

James 6 - Our best attacking threat!!

Jaidi 2 - Looked like he couldn't be bothered.

Trotman 3 - Rusty.

Thomas 5 - Ok but please don't try to pass it forward; give it to Lloyd.

Harding 5 - Caught out for the first goal a bit but generally had a decent game.

Hammond 4 - Missed a sitter. Didn't hurt the opposition at all.

Schneiderlin 3 - Mostly pointless.

Lallana 6 - Used the ball well on the rare occasions we strung more than 2 passes together.

Antonio 6 - Did well in the first half. Good throws.

Lambert 5 - Good pen. Poor game.

Connolly 5 - Not really his fault due to lack of service but never looked likely to anything.

Waigo - 6 Did well. I would have him in the team.

Mills - dunno. Didn't really notice him.

Well what can you say to that, defensively we haven't got it right James is no right back, & Trotman & Jaidi you would think they'd never played together before. Think we turned up believing the hype that all we had to do was turn up. Also missed a hat full of clear cut chances. Their Keeper made a few great saves as well. just a dissapointing day all round, and at least 2 games now to get out of the relegation zone. They also forgot to play football & got dragged into playing long ball.

This is a real kick up the backside, and a wake up call to AP and the players.

Maybe Trotman wont be so big a loss as we fear when he goes back.

Positive enough ? Best I can do, I am afraid.

Unsurprisingly, you failed to answer my question as to the sub(s) you would have made.

Yep, B&HA did us a kipper, no arguements there. And I honestly believe they deserved their win. A bad day at the office for too many players. with any luck they have now learnt their lesson and will go on a run better than the one which has just finished.

I am very dissapointed and frustrated. This match has further enhanced my belief that this season is about restructuring and that we will finish just above mid-table come the end of the season.

P.S. I also think that we will move out of the relegation places, for the final time this season, at the Tranmere game!

Fair play Brighton my @rse... We dominated and just didn't get the break. Credit to there keeper, credit to them scoring whilst we slept at the back. But look at the whole 90 minutes.

We were crap mate.

Granted we missed some chances but we need to play better than this with the ball and our defending was pants. Brighton did what most away teams at SMS will try to do.

Lambert appeared to be struggling, a bit under the weather, although that might have been my internet stream freezing....

I had a horrible feeling beforehand that me watching Saints live would continue a 3 year tradition of not seeing them win. James' crossing is accurate enough but from far too deep, our defence was generally slow both mentally and physically. Lallana and Schneiderlin were OK, but I wish the latter could shoot. Antonio still seems to be an impact sub as he was definitely hiding before he got taken off (rightly IMHO).

Oh well, let's hope they've got it out of their system and AP will make sure they learn from the experience.

They scored 3 times; hit the post; Kelvin made a stunning save midway through the 2nd half; they should have had a 1st half penalty in all honesty; so fair play to Brighton it pains me to say...
