The League, the FA Cup, The JPT? There are strong cases for and against both IMO.

The League

For - There is still a chance of promotion and we don't want to get stuck in a relegation battle.

Against - Both promotion and relegation are highly unlikely. In all likely hood we wont have anything to play for come the end of the season.

The FA Cup

For - A big competition, big financial rewards in the latter rounds and the chance to play some of the big Prem sides.

Against - We will inevitably come accross teams in higher leagues if we progress and we're unlikely to beat most of them. Winning it is also near impossible.

JPT

For - The chance of a day out or two at Wembley and some silverwear.

Against - Not a very glamourous, exciting or important competition.

I would probably say the JPT. It would be nice to win something.

Haven't voted yet - I'll reserve judgement. Whilst I'd settle for mid-table this season, we can still push for the play-offs and in that sense there's no reason why we can't go up. Howeverrr, we got a real chance of getting to a Wembley final... So I'll go with JPT now as mid-table in the League looks likely.

I voted JPT. Daft, I know but it's winnable for us. We need something to replace that sword in the trophy cabinet, and a piece of silverware would be a boost.

So, I'd go for winning the JPT and midtable safety in the League 1.

Obviously, safety is No1 priority. If we could be guaranteed promotion that would outrank JPT, but that looks unlikely.

it has to be the league....If we cant go up this year I want us to be in red hot form as much as possible..I want winning league games becoming the norm for long periods..

how negative that some have given up on the league already

Cant believe ..those who would rather win the JPT instead of promotion.:confused:00

That's not really the question I was posing. My point is that, whilst possible, promotion is a very long shot. We started the league 10 points away already. We're now 5 games away from the halfway point and 13 points away from 6th spot.

We are going to have to overtake 15 teams just to make the playoffs. That involveds winning 5 games more than the top teams already contending for those spots.

Realistically we have a much higher chance of winning the JPT than getting promoted.

JPT unless we hit a very good or bad run of form, then the league should take priority.

So, that's the league vote then? Really thought this was a stupid poll when I first read it. Re-reading, still agree, stupid vote. How could anyone vote that the JPT or FA cup is more important than the league ?

Am I going mad? What do you think is APs number one priority for this year?

I think it's very blinkered to say that promotion or relegation is 'highly unlikely'.

Will get back in my box though before someone points me in it.

Long term, Short term or mid term priorities are quite simply to focus on winning the next game. Liverpool have come unstuck by trying to focus more on Europe than the premiership and the old adage of 1 game at time still works. Pick the strongest team that you need (not necessarily the strongest that you have) for each game.

I voted for the JPT.

I honestly think we're unlikley to get promoted in the League. We may well make the play-offs, but would be odds against going up even then.

In thirty years of supporting Saints, I've never seen us win anything. Of course, I want us to get promoted. But in my imagination, we beat Leeds at Wembley to win the JPT in the Spring and then win League One in 2011 with c. 110 points.

I think I'd prefer that to winning this year's play off final against Huddersfield and getting knocked out by Norwich in the JPT.

Madness? Maybe.

The real lunacy is that some people think the FA Cup is the priority!

League for me, until we have no chance of getting promotion. In fact even if promotion becomes impossible I want us to be winning every league game we play so that next season the players know that they can beat anyone in the division and any team that plays us know they are going to be in for a hell of a game.

I see the JPT as a bit of a bonus and a chance for a nice day out if we get to the final. We're in the competition on merit and should show it respect.

Besides, once we're back in the Prem those of us who were there can then feel smug and better than all the johnny-come-latelys ;)

Until such time as we are actually safe in this division then it has to be the League over everything; that stays the same until such point as we cannot get promoted as well.

The Trophy is there to be won and the FA Cup is great to take part in but not at the expense of our league campaign.

1 defeat against brighton and give up on the league..?

Nobody is saying that.

I'm just saying for example, if it came to a scenario when we had to rest some of our key players because of fixture congestion, which matches would you rest them for. I would say the JPT matches take priority because we have a much greater chance of winning and promotion would take a small miracle.

IF (and I stress IF, as it is still an unlikely scenario)) we got to the playoffs, I would fancy our chances against anybody - assuming Leeds are already promoted. So for a day out at Wembley, I would rather it be in the playoff finals than the JPT. I know we're not THAT good....but we are as good as any other side in this League (with the possible exception of Leeds...god how I hate saying that...) and we are developing a winning mentality, so why not! IF we set our sights on the JPT the season is effectively over in March. Besides, it's too bl00dy cold for me to come back then, I'd much rather book my flights for May! (still cold, but at least I can get plenty of golf in as well! :) )

It's gotta be the league. We need to be playing consistantly well this season, so that, even if we don't go up this season, we have a strong winning mentality against the teams in this league, and that we are confident for automatic promotion come May 2011.

In terms of the cup competitions, clearly the JPT is more important. The FA Cup is merely a sideshow, where the only thing important about it is maintaining confidence and form for the next league game.

Agree your rationale here, but the most important thing for us is to consolidate in the league first.

I think you are right in saying that it would be too much of an ask to force our way into the play-off fixtures but to place ourselves just outside of them and allow AP to make early plans for a push next season is paramount I would suggest.

In saying that, a cup final appearance at Wembley would always be welcome regardless of whatever trophy we are competing for.

I loved the Simod(?) cup final !:D

It's got to be to win each game that we play, so that means the main priority is the League as we have way more League games than any other. I was hoping that we would get a big Prem team in the cup and go out in glory so that we can concentrate on the League from January onwards. Perhaps in the 4th Round. The JPT is a bonus and it would be great to go to Wembley but it's nowhere near as significant as continuing our winning form in the league.
