Midfield - What now?

I think wotton did a good job today, but that's in a 5. Not quite sure how he'll do in a flat 4, we'd need an advanced attatcking midfielder to play off him.

How about...

---------Wotton

----James - Lallana

Antonio ---------Holmes

I like the look of that, but put Waigo on for Antonio. I know MA had a good game today, but I think he's more of an impact sub.

for me its a no brainer, pay the money and get Stock in!!! for that matter, get Danns in as well!

Agreed signing perminent or loan only option now!!! Straight red for morgan so thats 3 games out plus hammond out for at least another 3, we cannot rely on James and wotton alone for that long even if both did well tonight.

Need to go shopping.

If we dont, the league campaign is over.

It could be helpful to bring in a player like Stock or Danns, but it won't change our season much. Schniederlin will be missed but I think we could cope for 3 games. Considering one of them is cup and one of them is Stockport at home (not winning that would be a sin), it may only be 1 game we could end up regretting his disappearance.

James showed today that he can be an excellent midfielder in League One.

I would not be concerned with a midfield of Wotton, James and Lallana at all for the 2 league matches that Schneiderlin will miss.

Or, in a 4 with two proper wingers, just James and Wotton in the middle.

These bookings and injuries are a blessing in disguise. Should hopefully tip the balance into convincing Cortese to go that extra mile in the negotiations for other players. Although, of course, the other teams we are bidding for players from will know that and nudge their valuations up a notch....

It's the back four short term that could be a worry, for Saturday...

No Jaidi

No Otsemobor

No Seaborne

No Fonte

No Aaron Martin

...could be a

Thomas Lancashire Perry Harding

situation!

Are the three new signings confirmed as cup tied for that?

I'd rather see James at RB and Thomas at CB, with Wotton and Lallana CM.

Not a bad shout, we could tell Donny to give us Stock, or we take Gillet back

We can just recall Simon Gillett. There's no need for threats. We could let him go back when the situation eased. However, I think we should buy a good midfielder and get it over and done with.

I'd rather have Wotton in for Lancashire. Then a midfield of Waigo, Lallana, James, Holmes. Lambert and Saga up front.

Squad still looking thin.

One word: fourfiveone!

Wot a difference from Saturday!

We looked very comfortable first half and the man on the ball always had a pass; all the front five had licence to go fd and it was very effective, we also got Fonte fd regularly with Wotton sitting in and holding with Perry. Another one of MS's better games and again it comes in a '5' rather than in 4-4-2. Excellent games for Antonio and James tonight. We should have been 3-0 and out of sight at HT, but at least we should see a decent second leg now.

In terms of injuries and suspensions I'm pretty sure we will buy, this has just forced our hand that bit further. Anybody want to review their play-off predictions in light of tonight's performance? We have just won relatively comfortably away at one of the better teams in the division and a team coming off the back of a 5-0 away win.

Nice work all, and a big up to the travelling fans tonight.

I'm sure Pards will go to NC in the morning & plead for him to open the wallet! No Hammond or Morgan for 2-3 weeks is unthinkable. No disrespect to the remaining midfield players - but we are now seriously lacking in the deprtment that we were seriously lacking in!

I was thinking about this as soon as Morgan was sent off tonight.

I would expect the back 4 on Saturday to be:

James Thomas Perry Harding (or Mills if he is still ill)

I also think we will see Connolly start alongside Rickie, hence his not featuring today.

This would see a flat 4 in midfield of:

Antonio Wotton Gobern Lallana

or, possibly, Lallana in the cenntre with Holmes on the left.

Either way, we are going to be thin on the ground for Saturday as anyone worth buying (for those advocating that route) would also be cup-tied.

We don't need to recall Gillett, he is already back with us. (You can see him training in the background of AP's interview pre the Millwall game.)

I would imagine, if he is not sold by then, that he will be on the bench for Saturday. I think AP rates Gobern above him for a CM slot.

Looks very shaky. I just hope we don't lose any of these through injury/suspension in the next few games.

It's amazing we've got one of if not the biggest squad in league one. However as soon as you look in more detail you see how little quaility in depth we have. It doesn't look like any ones leaving in this window (prehaps Gillet) so we need a really good clearout in the summer even if means paying up contracts.

As for the midfield with what we have left I'd play 4-5-1 with Wotton, James and Lallana in the middle Holmes on the left and Papa on the right.

Agreed with this. Wotton and James will never be good enough to compete in CM with many teams we'll face, let alone the top 8 teams. AP and NC - its time to act and get another CAM into the mix while Hammond mends and Morgan chills.
