OldNick Posted 17 January, 2011 Share Posted 17 January, 2011 The Man u game I fear is an unwanted distraction in our quest to do get promotion. We play Exeter the following tuesday, and that is far more important a game IMO. NA has a problem as he will most likely field our best 11 against Man U and so the players could well be tired for the Exeter game. This is so much like our cup run last season that eventually cost us in the run in.

Doctoroncall Posted 17 January, 2011 Share Posted 17 January, 2011 But didn't the league results after the cup game show it wasn't the case. It was more to do with the tactics, bad referees (well the one at the tranmere game anyway) and playing catch up?
fanimal Posted 17 January, 2011 Share Posted 17 January, 2011 Well, we beat Prem Lge Blackpool and then had long away trip 3 days later and won 6-0....I would take a repeat of that distraction! It is only a game, 90 minutes footie. As I said elsewhere, Exeter have a cup tie on saturday at Swindon so same for both teams? When we had a rest, we got beat at home by Brentford! No logic at all....!

Far better to give it our all in a high profile game that can showcase how great our club can be to masses of people around the world then to simply roll over, protect our assets and set a horrible psychological precedent for the league run in. EastleighSoulBoy Posted 17 January, 2011 Share Posted 17 January, 2011 Put out a strong team, we would have anyway if fulfilling the league fixture due that day, give our best and see what happens. If we lose then we can hold our heads up having given a good account and there is the League to concentrate on. If we win then Happy Days, great lolage at the Plastics and more money to come into the club via another cup game. Win win situation IMHO.

Well said. there are some people on here who seem to spend their whole lives worrying about what might happen, we are in the 4th round of the FA Cup against the top team in the country, this is a good thing, chance to get a decent atmosphere and fill the ground, who knows maybe even some of the money raised to fund a signing to make the squad stronger in January!! Saints are more than capable of slipping up at Exeter regardless of the FA Cup, yet if we don't win there you for a fact there is certain characters on here loving it so they can rush on with their i told you so posts. FFS you can't voice a concern without the over optimists who don't seem to understand how the Man U game is a draw on our energies having a moan. It is great that we get a bit more column inches but NA said after saturdays games that we looked leggy after the Oldham game. I am putting myself out financially and timewise to get to Exeter to watch us, and so am right to wonder if the Man u game could take our focus. Our priority should be promotion, not worrying about the vanity of parading on tv in a game we have less than 5% chance of winning if United show up. We are here and so be it but it is right to question whether it may affect us.

Weston Saint Posted 17 January, 2011 Share Posted 17 January, 2011 Unwanted distraction? Well for some supporters like me who want to see league success yes. For the players, no. It gives them a chance to perform on a big stage. They will love it and as others have said, 6-0 away to Oldham days after beating Blackpool suggest we can cope. May be just as well the Charlton game was switched again.

Cabrone Posted 17 January, 2011 Share Posted 17 January, 2011 We really should be good enough to cope with both with the resources we have at our disposal. Other teams will get injuries too. The Cat Posted 17 January, 2011 Share Posted 17 January, 2011 Weird thread. The answer is it's impossible to say. Who knows, we could beat Man Utd, lose to Exeter and still gain automatic promotion. If we weren't playing in the 4th round we'd be playing Charlton at home and might have lost. Maybe now we'll win the rearranged game in April? Who knows? There's still 22 league games to play. How supporters can be negative about the chance for us to play against the best team in the country at home in front if a sell out crowd is beyond me. Can't people just enjoy the fact we'll be playing in a high profile game on terrestrial tv and earning more money and exposure for the club? I'm quite excited that we're playing Man Utd, but then equally excited about going to Peterbrough the Saturday after because it will be a new ground for me and should be a cracking game of football. Why not just enjoy the ride without moaning about and over-analysing every small detail?

belgrave Posted 17 January, 2011 Share Posted 17 January, 2011 isn't this one of the reasons we watch them ? bigger games, bigger teams, more exposure, more whatever ? I'm still convinced that from the day Redknapp fielded half a team against united (may have been chelsea) in the cup, and we got stuffed, we went on a downer. All this "concentrate on this rather than that" crap is, literally, crap. FFS

HR fielded half a side to give Man U an easy ride so that they would go easy on us on the last day of the season when we knew we'd have to win to avoid relegation. Dig Dig Posted 17 January, 2011 Share Posted 17 January, 2011 We should stop training as well so no players get injured... + 1. I'm also concerned about the players playing games and training in case they pick up injuries. I'm also shocked that the players are allowed to go their own way once they have left the building for the day....anything could happen to them...... Players these days are pro athletes with top class medical and training facilities. If we want success then having to juggle league and cup competions in just something we have to do. I'm sure Utd arn't worried that the game is a distraction from their league and champs league campaigns.
Nexstar Posted 17 January, 2011 Share Posted 17 January, 2011 This is ridiculous. We played strong teams against Shrewsbury and Cheltenham (also 90 minute matches) and now that we have drawn the best team in the land you are suggesting that the players that have got us to this point and worked their socks off all season, should not be allowed to play?! Our cup run last season didn't end until nearly April, this time it will almost definitely be over before January is out. People need to realise these are footballers who are not made of glass and there is no way Adkins will get them to ignore the league and just look towards this one game. Give it to Ron Posted 17 January, 2011 Share Posted 17 January, 2011 Yes it is a distraction and I couldnt give a toss about the game - I want automatic promotion and nothing else matters. Its the only way we will keep our better players, but isn't this what squads are for? I think we are still 3 players light from being a good squad for automatic promotion, fast winger and forward and another good box to box midfielder If Chaplow is out then we are stuffed. Gobern is Ok but we do not have the luxury of bedding him in.

If Hammond is back then Morgan plays the more forward role. But he doesnt play that role - or seem to like that role as he always plays behind Hammond. Now we could play Puncheon in that role - if he is still here or wants to be here. I personally dont think Hammond and Schneiderling play well together as too much the same. Morgan has had some good games lately and seems to have settled in some form so dont think changing his role is the right thing to do.
