Charlton AWAY Build Up Thread

Cant see a thread for this yet...

As we all know, its one of our games in hand on the teams around us (not including Brighton). Would be great if Saints could pull a win out of the bag, though a draw wouldn't be the end of the world as I can see us getting 7 points out of the next 3, and that should do us nicely.

Charlton are on a pretty sorry run at the moment, currently sitting 23rd in the League 1 form table based on the last 6 games. If there was ever a good time to play them, it would seem to be now!

COYS!

Current form would suggest a Charlton win completely out of the blue is the most likely outcome. We don't have a great record at the valley, can't remember the last time we won there.

1-1 draw last season

0-0 the year before

1-1 the year before

0-0 our last season in the Prem

2-1 defeats in the 2 consecutive seasons before that.

1-1 the 2 consecutive years before that

5-0 defeat 2 years before that (The 'Great Escape' season when they went down)

...

basically we haven't won at the valley in over 20 years, I got bored of looking. Long overdue methinks.

I beleive it's the same Ref from The Boxing Day match.

For those travelling up - don't bother setting off if there has been a rain shower in the previous 24 hours the pitch will be deemed wterlogged!!!

TBH though maybe that postponement was for the best (so long as we win!!) as their form has dipped off recently - but we must not be complacent.

Hopefully a large away following will have the place ringing with OWTS as they celebrate a super win.

So we've only lost their twice in the last 8 seasons. Don't be such a miserable b*stard, we're well due a win there and I reckon we're just about to hit a bit of form.

I love you alps :D Half full to half empty in 0.5 flat

You've got to admit it is the sort of game we lose. We are on a good run, could go second with games in hand if Peterbourgh dont win tonight. Charlton on a terrible run, losing every week, no confidence, fans p*ssed off and will turn on their players if they dont start well. We used to be known as the team everyone wants to play when on a bad run, it was a guarenteed 3 points for them, lets hope we are no longer a soft touch and right the wrongs of Wallsall. Win this one and with two home games to come we could be on a run of 7 straight wins.

Saturday put that one to bed for me. Just hope we come out of the blocks quickly and don't give Charlton any encouragement and we'll be fine. And lets face it, this game was due to be played on Boxing Day when they were a very different proposition, so in a way it is a nice little bonus that they are dire at the moment.

Does anyone know how many we are taking there and the best route from Waterloo?

Stroll across the concourse to Waterloo East, take a train to Charlton.

i am digging a tunnel. I set off from my living room after saturdays game and am currently typing this from under the M25, if i keep going at my current rate i should pop up outside the Antigallegan at around 5pm tomorrow leaving me with a couple of hours to wash, change and get a burger and a pint in. I have covered the hole in my living room wall from where i started digging with a poster of Rachel Welch incase the old bill come round to check if i have travelled.

Real Ale pubs near London Bridge Station :

The Market Porter in Borough Market usually has 12 to 15 real ales on tap - but they are not keen on football colours beng worn

The Rake - outstanding Pub - but is v small and gets full quickly

Stop it you big tease. :(

Think I'll revert to Old Specky tomorrow night - London pride just doesn't seem the right beer for that night!!!

trust you are going - have a good one (or 3 or 4!!)

After all that hard work I think you should treat yourself to 2 burgers and maybe a Pie at halftime as well. ;)

is it better to have prematch drinks at Chalrton or at London Bridge?

I normally go to London Bridge - am not sure if there are any good pubs in Charlton

There's the Antigallican in Charlton, right opposite the station. Away fans only. There's also Roses of Denmark if you turn left and walk along the main road which isn't a bad pub either.

I reckon there must be plenty of tickets left still, http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10280~2320913,00.html latest update this morning still reminding people if they do not but in advance price will increase by 50p on the night, and as you cannot collect tickets you must pay on the gate if you cannot get to st marys, surely they would not put that if it was close to a sell out

Im going to try and buy tickets on the night. Does anyone know if this will be possible and how many tickets we have bought or are left?

I'd say your best bet is to ring the ticket office now and order one. If you can't pick it up today or tomorrow morning, they will send it up on the bus with the Travel club and you can pick it up at The Valley, which is what I'm doing.

So we've only lost their twice in the last 8 seasons. Don't be such a miserable b*stard, we're well due a win there and I reckon we're just about to hit a bit of form.

I said a win was long over due didn't I? :D

Won there 3-1 on Boxing Day 1977/78 the year we last got promoted

So what you're saying is if we win tomorrow night, we're pretty much guaranteed promotion? Good stuff.

This is the game where we need to score early and then do what we did at Oldham and keep our foot on Charlton's throat for 90 minutes. That would send out a message to Fergie Jnr as well - can't believe I'm going to cheer on MK Dons tonight but needs must! Charlton would really struggle if we got an early goal and may get on their players backs. Despite the great form Barnard is in I'd be tempted to start with Forte - I agree with Chez's comments on him on the Sheff Wed thread and Gary Doherty is very, very slow as are Charlton's other CBs. If you have a look at the goals they are conceding it is quite often that they are beaten for pace so Forte might be able to draw some fouls or get them on a yellow and then bring on Barnard after an hour with lots of extra space and Charlton's back 4 knackered.

I am always more confident when Barnard plays. He is our fox in the box and links up well with Lambert. I hear what you are saying about pace but I feel Barnard is much more likely to score than forte. Forte scoring record not great either. Come 70 mins and we need a goal then his pace may have an impact. Lets hope he comes on to save Barney's legs which will be a good sign.

Thanks for your replies, Forte starting was a suggestion but I can see where you are coming from, Barnie is in great form and it would be a risk to disrupt that. Also, Guly needs some game time under his belt as well. Hopefully Barnie will get two, Lambert one and Lallana one, we'll be 4-0 up after 70 minutes and we can take all 3 off to rest and Guly and Forte then take up the reigns! I can dream anyway, whilst we're at it MK batter Posh 3-0 tonight....

I’ve been getting two different stories here. Saints say the only way to do it will be to go to the ground early and buy them but that there are only 150 left and may well sell out before tomorrow.

Charlton said that although I can’t but tickets from the saints end from them there should be loads of tickets available and just come down on the night and pay cash.

Then there is the saint official site….

Is it possible that Charlton didn’t give the saints ticket office the full allocation. I know the away end at Charlton is pretty big, maybe they just send through 75% of the tickets of which we have 150 remaining, the other 25% will be on sale on the night.

Or am I just completely grasping at straws and will either spend the night in the Charlton end or listening to Dave Merrington.
