Fonte Injured

Adkins seemed to indicate in his post match interview on Solent that Fonte would be back for Monday. I wonder if the 4 bookings not becoming 5 was more of an issue..... In any case, Martin looked fine to me.

The trouble with Martin is he is not a footballer.

Cannot pass has no ball skills not comfortable on the ball

The nail has been hit.

The team have no confidence in him and you can see their reluctance to pass him the ball. Makes it very hard to play our usual style of football

That's totally spot on john, he's in no way a cultured CB and never will be - but in emergencies he's fine, defensively he's strong and sound which is all you can ask for really. I never get worried when he's on the team sheet which is testament to him really. He'll never be a regular in this side though simply because as you say, his distribution is not even close to being good enough.

Probably just me with a wierd theory, but now we're told JF will be back for Brighton, that makes three one-game injuries in recent weeks, all in positions where the cover could be thin.

Just wonder whether there's some examination of what we need in the window going on. Certainly the Donny game confirmed RL is critical and we need an alternative. Sadly Bart did himself no favours against Blackpool when asked to show he's a safe deputy. But I would say Martin did well last night, even though with 2CBs out long-term and another maybe carrying an injury, we still need another (loan?).

Hope NC has been watching.

Martin has improved and was o.k. last night but we really missed Fonte and I think when one of our preferred team is out we fall to pieces,Chaplow being out is another example. Our bench was very weak last night,we need some strength in depth if we are serious about this seasons promotion.

I can't believe the complete cods wallop aimed at Aaron Martin, " oh he's not a footballer" "the team have no confidence in him" what complete and utter tosh! Fonte is a very accomplished CB keeping AM out of the side without a doubt, if for whatever reason AM was playing week in week out keeping Fonte out of the team if the roles were reversed, Fonte would come in and he would be copping a slating. He is a very young lad without the benefit of academy life at Southampton and in reality he has ability beyond his years and experience and has never let us down on the pitch when he has played. (anyone say penalty v Leeds first day of the season should go to the stupid step straight away!!).

Simple question for all you negative thinkers who would you prefer to be the next man in line for a centre back position between these 3 only: Martin or Cranie or Lancashire

I really despair of our fan base who criticise a (young) player in such a way.

Because Fonte is out - did you suddenly expect someone (Martin ) to come in and show the skill and experience of a player with around 300 games ?

Of course Martin's not as good as Fonte..if he was ...he'd be playing every other week, as it was he didn't let the side down, and how else will players get games.

We will never get the best 11 , fit and on-form for every match . There are bound to be injuries, suspensions and loss of form, etc.

It certainly shows when we have key players out; Davis, Lambert, Lallana even Chaplow ...but if we have to be without them for a shorter, or longer period, then fans should back the sub. to the hilt and encourage them. They surely know they are not first choice but booing, and hard criticism is hardly likely to improve their confidence. How would you feel if people in your workplace stood around... just waiting for you to make a mistake ...?

The only problem with Martin was that he isn't as confident on the ball as Fonte - the way Fonte plays its like having another midfielder/attacker at times and Martin just can't offer that at the moment. He was defensively sound and provided an excellent deputising performance on Friday. As others have said, of course he isn't as good as Fonte (in this league not many are) but he is young, he is learning and he has shown he is capable of stepping into the firing line as and when required.

I am surprised at this rather nasty criticism of Aaron Martin.

So am I. I didn't see what he did wrong - he seemed to fit effortlessly into the team & for a centre-back with barely a dozen league games to his name he seemed pretty confident to me. He may not have Jose's assurance yet, but I bet quite a few NPC clubs would like him in their starting elevens. Criticise when he plays poorly, but not because he's not quite at Fonte's level yet.

I am surprised that people have not noticed Martin's inability to use the ball in effective way

It is not nasty criticism just what I have noticed

He is OK defensively but his distribution is poor which does not allow the team to counter attack

Just watch him and you may change your mind

I've seen him in all home games this season when played and the second half at Reading, can you please give some evidence to support your statement as I don't agree with what you are saying. I think he is a good player who to me looks assured on the ball and does the simple things first without trying to play others into danger. Having watched the high lights of the Bristol City game the speed he got up from the ground for their goal almost allowed him to get a goal saving block in, I'm not sure Fonte would have been so quick.

Few realise just how important Jose is to the creative part of our game as well as on the defensive side.

He's the man that the CMs use to create a bit of time and a bit of space when necessary,if he isn't there and his replacement

can't do exactly the same job then the whole pattern changes, they probably have to try to go forward when it's not really on.

From the commentary (and the little I've seen) it was pretty obvious that Jose was being missed on Friday, said so on the match thread a couple of times. Not to detract from Martin, he's no doubt an excellent young defender but Jose is so much more than that, probably why we tried to play him with a broken toe (if you believe the reports) for 2 games.

I do feel sorry for Martin, in the games I have seen him this season he is surprisingly solid for a young player with such a lack of experience. I have never seen him have a bad game, I never worry when he is on the team sheet (unlike bialkowski)! I have total faith in him, I can't remember him making mistakes like Fonte does on the odd occasion, as said above I think that a fair few NPC sides would take Martin into their sides, he's still young so give him time :-) haven't noticed anything wrong, unneeded criticism IMO.

I suggest that you just watch him he does nothing with the ball that is the point I am making
