Why do some people go to the game?

A stupid question of course, but hearing some comments in and around me yesterday it made me wonder if people just like to moan.

We were beating Chelsea, who are the champions of europe and were 3rd in the Premier League, yet the negativity coming from some of our fans was incredible.

In particular there was a guy near me who spent the entire game slagging Lambert off, including shouts of 'Get him off'. The atmosphere was brilliant yesterday, but I sometimes wonder if people prefer to be losing so they can have a good whine and a moan, maybe it is their weekend release or whatever.

I also listened to a couple of Saints fans explaining to each other that Wigan and Villa both have far better squads than us, and will likely overtake us soon. Jesus wept.

I know being a Saints fan hasn't exactly been easy at times, but I am pretty confident this young side we are developing is going to get better and better. Try and enjoy it!

There were a lot of Chelksi "fans" in amongst the Saints yesterday, trying to look cool and pretending to be Saints fans, are you sure they were real Saints fans. After all on yesterday's display Wigan and Villa do have better squads than Chelski :-)

I think the ones doing the slagging off often tend to be the JCLs that have returned now we're in the prem again. There was a fair few of them around yesterday making stupid uninformed comments (and one couldn't even work the turnstile!) since they haven't seen the way this squad has matured in the last few years.

It's one of the the things that we'll have to put up with now unfortunately and it's also (in my opinion) the reason the atmosphere hasn't been as great this season as it was last season.

You will always get complete morons involved with every club. I had the misfortune of sitting next to a couple last year, one in particular spend every minute of every game at the start of the year telling Lambert to get back to L2 where he belongs. It's safe to say that he was silenced a few months into the season - maybe the guy has resurfaced near you this year!

I don't have a ST so first time in that seat, and that is part of the reason it annoys me I guess. I wish I could go every week, but work commitments etc. mean I can't. When I do go, I appreciate it!

Football attracts a wide spectrum of people and with football being a social game many of them feel the need to impress their opinion on others around them. It's the same home and away.

The worst I've seen this season is a bunch of well oiled morons at Wigan away who were having a go at Ramirez all first half and got into a fight with the people in the row behind them. The people in the row behind them told them to get behind the team during the game as the negativity doesn't help, and even if they didn't like Ramirez shouting it at the game was pretty stupid. This then caused a fight where the people having a go at Ramirez then tried to sarcastically get behind the team in the second half to prove a point over something and of course they ended up looking like idiots as Saints played very well and in the end they got into it and behind the team.

Guy behind me after the game said about 10 times that we wouldnt have beaten Chelsea if they picked their full team. As if it devalued the win somehow.

Just enjoy the win FFS!

Clearly he failed to spot Lallana, Ramirez, Fonte missing plus 50% of Boruc then. Muppet!

Was a bloke in the loo that reckoned we didn't play well first half....totally baffled us and he got a few short answers back.

There's simply no response to that. That was one of the best halves of football I've seen Saints play in a long while; let alone against the Champions League holders and 3rd placed side in the division. We had 60% posession and entirely dominated in every area of the pitch.

I'll be honest. I love a good moan. And I'm willing to pay good money to have one.

Watching football is one of the few things in my life where I can let off steam without any of the things going wrong being in some way my fault.

That said, I don't go for any overarching analysis of any player (Lambert not fit for a pub team, Guly worse than my grandma etc), but I do shout a lot if a player misplaces a pass, fails to play in a teammate etc.

I'll admit I shouted 'Get the ball in there' at Fox when he was taking the ball into the corner as I wanted to see us score another, but him keeping the ball was fine.

The only times I moan during the match is if the Manager makes a silly substitution, a player gives the ball away and concedes a goal as a result, or if a player misplaces a pass. I'll never actively boo or slate one of our own players, I've never booed Guly and have never been part of the 'Ramirez is ****e' fanclub, I've moaned when Fox has given away the ball or something but that's just the usual reaction for me when a player gives the ball away in a silly position.

There were loads of people at Wigan away that kept slating Puncheon (admittedly not his best game but he was on a terrific run of form at the time), Ramirez and Lambert which thoroughly ****ed me off.

It's the Piers Morgan syndrome. Slags of his team and calls for Wenger's head constantly. Recently saying he wants Moyes as a replacement. Same with cricket. They only want to be part of success and can't support properly. Should fck off and support Utd.

And social media has made people think their opinions are important and often just copying something they have heard or read.

God I hate Piers Morgan on Twitter. He's the ultimate celebrity, fan without a clue, type pundit. One week Wenger has to go, the next he has to stay...

Horrible little man...

I still can't get my head round the cockles who rush off early to miss the traffic. Are their lives so busy that they have to get home before everyone else? Bunch of ****ing prunes, winning 2-1 against the European champions, yet they have to rush off.

It is crazy....mind you the last ten mins Saturday I was paralysed with fear so couldn't move even if I wanted to :D

Spot on. Some right idiots have turned up near me this season. Tyro managers I call them, (with apologies to those few decent ones) all up and at 'em types. My nipper comes home from a night out constantly complaining about other Saints fans. We have a large proportion of fans who would rather see the tactics of Stoke and West Ham under Allerdyce than the football we have played for the last few years.

The thing about supporting a football club is that even when it's bad - it's still good. When your team is playing well and winning then there are precious few things in adult life more joyous. On the other side of that coin, when everything is going wrong and a fan learns to despair of his own team ... well that too can be the cause of real passion.

Either way for a few hours a week this great game allows millions of ordinary working people to escape the crushing burden of working life and responsibility. In this peaceful, ordered, and prosperous country we may be doomed to endure safe existences that are devoid of much in the way of real peril, passion, or even meaning in some cases. Football however (so unimportant it is free to become strangely important) allows us to regain the frill of being truly alive again.

Karl Marx was wrong again for it is surely football, not religion, that is the true 'opiate of the people'.

He couldn't go on Saturday and was more interested in Sir Rickie's wonder goal to be frank. He hero worships Lambert but although he's been to St Marys quite a few times now the great man has resolutely refused to do the business on every single occasion!

He has seen Guly score though ... a rare occurrence indeed.

We were discussing the great panoramic photo in the 3rd Anniversary JPT thread over our Beer and Pasty, and it prompted 2 of us to recall after that match getting back to the coach to Basingstoke and one of our mates almost at the point of spontaneous combustion questioning why why why Pardew had subbed so-and-so for someone else. We just ****ed ourselves laughing saying "hey Steve what are you getting your knickers in a knot for? We just won 4-1 FFS!".

i think some people just moan on auto pilot.
