Automatic Porn Blocking

So Cameron is to announce that porn is to be automaticity blocked to all UK homes with the Internet, tough you can opt in.

What do the w@nkers of Saints Web make of this! Is it going to far? Will you opt in? Will it be a popular policy?

I spend months away with sh!t Internet at sea, so to have porn blocked at home is not something I want. Looks like I'll be opting in (though hope they don't send a conformation letter for Mrs OOO to read)

This is one of the most stupid, sensationalist, narrow minded, fascist policies that Camoron has come up with, ( and that is speaking professionally - part of my job is controlling Internet access for schools and public access networks ).

1) Define pornography. Will the match day threads with the scantily dressed nuns fall on the wrong side of the line ?

2) Who controls the categorisation process for websites - will it be CESG ? Will all ISPs use the same list ?

3) How does a site that is incorrectly blocked appeal and get white-listed ? ( We had an automatic supplier issued update to our systems a few years ago that blocked access to all broadsheet newspapers ! )

4) Will they expect to be able to inspect the 'opt-in' lists ?

5) It will not stop the creation or distribution of child pornography by the dedicated perpetrators, which is done by use of VPNs and secure communications systems. Other technical controls need to be used by CEOP, etc, to counter this issue.

6) No filtering system is 100% effective, the only way to block Internet problems totally is to disconnect from it.

7) In my experience, most 15 year old boys are able to find ways around Internet controls anyway. One easy way is to use an anonymous proxy based outside the UK.

It will be interesting to see how the ISPs respond.

You only have to look at Pirate Bay to see how difficult this can be.

My ISP (Virgin) has blocked the original site but there are numerous overseas-hosted duplicates available. As soon as one is blocked, another one appears.

I thought it was only kiddie-porn they were talking about, which AFAIK is illegal to download or view in the UK anyway.

No, he wants to criminalise possessing porn depicting rape! What a joke! No one is going to look best pleased with a fire extinguisher and a pineapple up their hoop and a bag over their head but I don't really see the harm.

In all seriousness, I think this is ridiculous. If they are willing actors then what does it matter what they are depicting? Why draw the line at porn - surely the depiction of rape full-stop should therefore be banned? And murder. And anything else that might unhinge a nutter. Nonsense.

No, it is everything that falls into Whitehall's definition of pornography. Child porn is already illegal - it is against the law to view it, even accidentally. Depictions of sexual violence are also, in my understanding, already illegal - covered by the Obscene Publications Act.

What about e-mails, which have explicit pictures of naked women, that are sent to you ? You have to open

them before you know the full content. Some would say that those pictures are obscene.

What about TV programmes / films which show someone getting sexually attacked, will those be banned ?

Give them time.

If so, that film will be banned too.

I knew this would happen. First it is tits on the muppet show, next it is page three, now pornhub, before you know it you won't even be able to walk behind a girl on a very steep elevator with a camera phone without someone kicking off.

Seems reasonable to me. One has to 'opt into' most adult orientated activities in life so don't see why an access point such as the Internet should be any different.

If I "opt" to nob a willing girly (this is all hypothetical, of course), the government probs won't know about it unless I send them pictures or something.

Apologies to Twitter fans for repetition, but I'm only on-board with this plan if anyone who opts in is officially decorated as a W4nker of the British Empire.

The government already have their eyes on you Pap, you're on their "official trouble-stirrers" list.

I think they'd have already discounted me as "all bark, no bite", Super Michael.

It's not as if I have several Panzer Divisions stashed in Home Counties hedgerows.

It's the wrong solution to the wrong problem. The law is perfectly adequate already in defining 'illegal' material, although the Government has cut the funding to the organisation policing it. As for preventing access by children, it just won't happen - they already know how to use anonymising proxies based in the states or elsewhere to circumvent access controls; I had to make a change to our systems this morning as another 'loophole' was brought to my attention.

Jackie Smith's husband will be upset.

I see the Daily Mail are championing this as something they have sorted out. Won't it be ironic if the Mail's own website is blocked due to it's "Sidebar of Smut"

Looks like I'll be using the proxy not just for match days but when the Mrs is at work.

Badger I do not think it is Cameron per sae whose come out with this . There has been a long campaign by various groups about this issue . Look at the furore after each paedophile conviction etc etc . Labour also planned to do this and are also behind the bill . So it has cross party and various campaign groups support

The Mail's website is a lascivious, leering paedo's paradise. Barely a day goes buy without some picture of a child flashing some leg/bum/tit for the cameras. It may not be porn but it is clearly intended to attract people who want to rub one out over a child.

Not a great line, VW. Existing law should be enough to get people that are sending dodgy stuff around. This is nothing more than a w4nker's register. Expensive one too, probably.

Regardless of who tries to bring this in there is no way it will deliver what they want, attempting censorship of the Internet is a forlorn hope unless you go the way of Saudi Arabia or China, and even there the people find ways around the blocks. As usual it's a headline grabbing blanket solution to a problem involving a small minority of offenders. CEOP and the IWF should be boosted, quite rightly, to tackle the child abuse issue, but most websites directly delivering this material are already blocked by ISP's, based on an IWF watchlist. The serious traffickers in this material use heavily encrypted systems and secure communications to attempt to avoid detection.

If you choose to buy a 'top-shelf' magazine you don't have to give your name, home address, and IP address before you buy it, but this legislation will require you to effectively do just that before you access www.playboy.com. Also, as I said earlier, who defines pornography ? If somebody posts a picture on FACEBOOK of their 18 month old child naked in a paddling pool, is that offensive ?

EDIT : a good basic Q&A with some of the pros and cons :

Once apon a time you had to have the embarrasement of walking into the newsagent to buy your porn. I thought that was all behind us with the internet. Now I have to ring up the ISP and tell them I like to look at porn. When will the first story come out shaming someone on the list? My wife and I like watching porn together. And anyone who says they don't like naked chicks is gay, and probably have their own tastes. I for one don't want naked chicks censored, I thought y ou shipped all the puritans over here.

Would you be so kind as to suggest some more websites like this so that i can conduct a thorough survey of my own, just to see what i would be signing up to or opting out of or whatever. About 1,000 would do, but please feel free to suggest more if you feel it necessary.

Open up your browser of choice, go to your search engine of choice, and type in the search term 'porn', ( be careful no to accidentally include the word 'child' at the same time ).

Badger , you are spot on there will be those who will be able to circumnavigate the system by using encrypted data. I think it is the media who are hogging and throwing the headline grabbing headlines . Its a political weapon who ever throws it.

Bit like the sudden rumour NA wants to sign SRL

Ps if this act is enacted and more importantly does that mean we will no longer have pictures of nuns of the match thread

or will we have to settle for muffins instead

For all the talk of a nanny state while Labour was in power, particularly around the smoking ban, it seems that the Conservatives have done one better. Nanny state and the beginnings of a blackmail list :)

Well, I think this is a great idea. We can go back to the halcyon days of accessing our pornography through the traditional way of finding nudie mags in hedgerows and railway sidings.

And just imagine the renewed thrill of visiting a foreign country and enjoying their laissez-faire attitude to anal fisting and the like when you happen across some videos in a local grocery store?

Face it, we've all suffered heavily from bouts of 'porn fatigue' since the internet has take off. This will invigorate us all. I'm horny just thinking about it.

How does it work in Iowa?

FWIW I'm not against the move particularly as it doesn't change much in reality but might make it more difficult for kids to view porn before they're ready. But it's not going to stop adults signing in and then watching whatever they do now. So it's largely a political statement by DC aimed at getting a few votes from parents IMO. In the grand scheme of things it won't cost much to introduce fairly innocuous legislation that placates worried mums and dads.

All it means is that new broadband packages come with an unlock facility.

Have to stand up against this kind of thing. It isn't about porn it is about a government deciding what you can and can't see. It starts with this and then before you know it it will spread to other things. These people need to remember they are there to represent us not control us. Cameron and co talk about protecting freedom but yet are determined to bring in things which limit your freedom.

People need to stand up to them.
