The most underrated Saint.

Who do you think it would be? A player of undoubted ability and use who somehow has been overlooked or forgotten?

The mention of Jo Tessem as a right back made me realise how underated he was in his time here, he was outstanding for us and prepared to play anywhere.

Any ideas?

Paul Jones always seems to get alot of undeserved stick for me, he made very few real mistakes yet always gets singled out as a dodgy keeper. Paul Telfer and Paul Williams also did really well for us especially in the early Strachan days, Paul Williams managed to be an almost seemless replacment for Dean Richards which was no mean achievment.

I always thought Kamil Kosowski looked useful when he played. Kind of like the Skacel of 2005, linking midfield and attack. Just a shame about the injuries and Burley not rating him enough to sign him. He was still in the Poland NT long after he left here.

I would also have to stick in a vote for Wolfboy. I heard he once got bored in a reserve game and started doing press-ups. Can anyone confirm this? Also a model pro who always gave 100%. Oh and the Spurs goal.

You are havin a laugh. He was f**king shiit. I lost count of the amount of matches he disappeared in. Really stood up and was counted during the relegation season, wasnt he ?

Wasn't he injured for most of the season? He only played in 7 league matches, and only played 90 minutes once.

You can't be serious.

He was recovering from a serious injury during the relegation season and probably shouldn't have played at all, but we were desperate for someone of his quality in the side.

I still think rushing him back was one of the main factors for his recuring injury problems and poor form during the first season down.

You might as well blame Killer or Pahars for not being there during the relegation season. At least Oakley got those goals against Pompey and Norwich.

In my younger days...

Cliff Huxford and Ken Wimshurst....Wing Halves.....and up front Derek Reeves and George O'Brien.

When my Mum and Dad were around they always said Charlie Weyman(spelling)

Up the middle for Charlie.....Til he got injured and everyone then realised how underrated and taken for granted his whole presence had been for Saints.

I always thought Oakley was a little over-rated. A good squad player for the Prem but not one of the best. And just cos Fuller is doing ok now, he was toss for us.

There's quite a few really that did great jobs for us in the Prem that you wouldn't really single out as great players.

Doddsey (much better than i sometimes think he's credited for), Telfer, Paul Williams.

Richard Dryden never really did a lot wrong in his time here (if we all forget that 5-0 defeat at Newcastle!)

Kevin Moore, Dave Beasent (given his reputation before joining, and his early games for us)

Ken Monkou didn't get a lot of press in the national media but was appreciated round here!

I'd second that, I'm surprised Burley didn't sign him up. On the whole Oakley debate, he looked very promising as a young player under Merrington, Souness sorted him out and got him eating and training properly, he was inconsistent under Jones but Hoddle got him playing really well. He got back into bad habits under Grey and Boring (didn't everyone?) but WGS had a pop at him at a fans' forum about his stamina and challenged Matt to pull his finger out - boy he did. Oakley was excellent when we had a good manager in charge to mix the carrot and stick approach but he could be a real tart if we had an average manager who wouldn't challenge him. He also lost the confidence to tackle after that awful knee injury V Boro and IMO hasn't quite been the same player since despite some useful cameos for Derby when Davies played him further up the pitch.

Claus I actually think was underrated - we always gave the focus to Richards or Svensson. yet Richards struggled without Claus reading the game alongside him. Claus's distribution was underrated too. Jo Tessem was a super pro and was excellent under Hoddle, WGS wasn't so keen. Paul Williams was a reliable stop-gap for us. Dave Beasant actually along with Super Ken turned out to be a rarity - a decent Branfoot signing. He was excellent in 95/96 and one of the reasons we just about survived. Pity his distribution wasn't so good with bottles of salad cream.

This. Got so much stick but was a good player

Ricardo Fuller too - look at him now

As a right wing-back, he was a key player in 02/03. As a right midfielder, he was not so clever but still a good free transfer signing by WGS, along with Paul Williams, in repairing the damage left by a novice Stuart Gray. He's still going for Leeds too.

Telfer is past it now but what we'd give for 2 experienced free transfers in that mould to help our kids along and to close out games.

Adam Hammill

The thread is about "underrated" not "overrated". Hammill must have been one of the most overrated, not to mention overweight players ever to grace our team, at least overrated in his own mind.

Most under-rated, in recent times I would go along with Oaks, and longer term Graham Baker. Its often the case that players who are critical in the midfield get overlooked, especially when they perform largely defensive roles as Oaks did. I recall many occassions when Oaks was the last line of defence and his tackling back was great. sadly lost his way a little when he was badly injured, and our idiot manager thought it would be better to lose him stick with Jasmine.

Oakley.

I'm sure we all rated Oakley quite highly at the time? Tessem was a great pro, agreed with that one.

I thought he used to get quite a bit of stick on here (well, one of its previous guises).

Hmm, I think it soured a bit towards the end, maybe, benji. But i recall him generally being well thought of?

Oakley,

He got so so much stick when he played and he was immense before he got injured. If he had carried on and not got injured i'm pretty sure he would have been in the england mix up. Yet Saints fans didnt even think he should have been playing for us !!

Sorry Robsk, you were right. It was only the raving idiots that didn't appreciate Oakley.

Agree with Telfs and Williams - both terrific signings.

From a different era, I never thought David Armstrong go the acclaim he deserved for scoring some important goals altho realise he was playing with KK and Moran amongst others.

Don't forget Nick Holmes.

We had a team of stars in those days, there were very few players that weren't internationals and most people thought Nick Holmes was there to make up the numbers.

Until it slowly dawned on people and myself included, that it all fell apart without him. A great servant and a star himself in his own special way.

Hassan Kachloul

I wouldn't argue with that, his contribution to the Great Escape season was immense.

I always rated Trevor Hebbard as a really skillful player but somehow he never seemed to make a big impact.
