According to latest rumours coming from Portuguese sources, Sporting Lisbon management have just rejected a 17 million euros coming from Southampton, set to purchase Argentinian international centre-back and left backwing Marcos Rojo (24). According to O Jogo, Primeira Liga giants are trying to raise bar and cash 20 from releasing former Spartak Moscow and Estudiantes player, not equipped with a second EU passport and currently on a deal with them until June 2016.

Screw it, let's just get Gardos, is it really worth breaking our transfer record on a player who just had the good world cup?

No it's not. I think this would be a colossal waste of money. £10-12m may be worth a punt but all the noise points towards a 'complicated' ownership situation, a selling club that keeps moving the goalposts and a player that, as you say, has had one good tournament. Move on me thinks.

If Rojo was interested in moving to saints he'd be on tweeter complaining and taking strike action to get here.......as he isn't he clearly doesn't want to be a saints player bad enough:)

Agreed.Would prefer Gardos and Van Dyjk for somewhere close to the same amount and then spend big on a class striker.

Roughly translated...

Rojo threat force output

Argentine international wants to give new direction to his career, after having noted in the world Marcos Rojo wants to leave Sporting and intends to carry out the intention to achieve their transfer to a Club of leading European Championships. When the game was found, the player, in line with the investment group Doyen, which holds 75% of the economic rights of the Argentine international, is willing to take to the last consequences the desire to reach immediately a new level in his career.Coveted by emblems of England and Italy, being at the top of potential reinforcements of emblems as Southampton or Naples, Rojo doesn't want to continue in Alvalade, where is regarded as the first option for the axis of the defense, having allowed the selection of Argentina in world of Brazil, having reached the end of the race and was considered the best left back in the competition.

It looks as if its one or the other between Rojo and Gardos.

“That’s true, we are interested because we lost Lovren and we need a player in that position. These are two players who are very interesting for us,” said Koeman.

Or you could interpret as we have lost Lovren and we needed a player anyway in that position.

Manchester United want to Marcos Rojo and also Argentine international wants to play at Old Trafford. The "Red Devils" made an offer of 20 million euros to Sporting pass by the Argentine central and it is now the SAD leonine the final decision.

According to the sports media, the continuity of Marcos Rojo in Alvalade is at risk. The title of the Argentinian World in 2014 aroused the interest of several European "giants", and will be very difficult to maintain the direction of Bruno Carvalho Marcos Rojo next season.

According to the Tuesday edition of the Daily GAME, Manchester United offered 20 million to Sporting, Bruno Carvalho and either refuse the Argentine exploded. Well i wouldn't know whther he'll go to Utd or not but he would certainly have considered Saints as beneath his status. Especially as he probably had noticed how difficult it is to get out once you're in.

My assumption is Rojo is still the number 1 target, otherwise Gardos would've been announced having already completed his medical.

Sounds like there's hope still that Rojo may sign.

Probably not, if the amount in this tweet is to be believed :-

My impression is van Gaal not that overwhelmed by Luke Shaw, a decision made before his time... hence his interest in Rojo (and his weird public comments about Luke being unfit, etc). Would be ironic for Luke if he ends up on the bench.

Going off topic slightly, i'd agree with that. Don't think we'd have seen Alex Ferguson criticising a player in public like that, especially a young player who they've only recently signed.

If they are after Rojo, I cant see him coming here. Although I think we'll only sign 1 CB & then a right back and a striker.

Keep on hoping then, in reality Rojo is out of our league. I mean we could offer 15.8 million £ (or 20 million euros) in the same way as Utd but his 3/4 owners are probably more concerned with the subsequent images rights deal that they will no doubt get if he's at Utd. Januzaj has just signed up with them as well. It's getting to be a very concerning situation with nebulous groups like Doyen, they co-own the players, act as their agents and manage their image rights. The players seem to do nothing without their approval.

he has used Shaw brilliantly to take charge of the dressing room. Perhaps a bold move considering the huge outlay, but one made from a position of strength and now he has every players attention. Not sure why they are bothering with five at the back. Shaw already does the wing back job as part of a four. Meh, what do I care? **** him.

Good player yet another reason why we shouldn't do stupid small bids for a international player. We had the money we still tried to get a cheap deal which was never going to happen here. Looks like we will get Gardos but some reports ive seen seems disappointing and he can only play in defence while Rojo can play in 2 positions which is perfect and why we should of done a bigger first bid. Could open the way for Bind though and if Utd get him as well Luke Shaw won't be getting first team football.

By all accounts we offered a lot of money for Rojo (17m euro) but sounds like the player was reluctant to move. The clause in his contract may well be related to if a big club comes in (and not the fee itself) which they seem to have now. No shame in missing out to United and I think we've moved on from this since Les came back from Portugal anyway - there has been no more news of us increasing our bid, and we have at least been proactive in getting another target lined up should the bid for Rojo fail in Gardos. If Rojo was ambivalent about being here in the first place, him moving elsewhere is for the best. We've already seen with Osvaldo, the problems that signing someone who thinks he is bigger than the club, can create.

Thank god we did not sign Rojo......if he is "going on strike" now this would have been a Lovren situation all over again for us in 12 months time if we had secured his transfer.

At some stage, we (as a club and fans) have to accept that in todays market making a marquee signing is not necessarily a good thing. Didn't work with Osvaldo, wouldn't have worked with Rojo (judging by his character traits he is displaying) and won't work with the next one (e.g. hernandez). We should concentrate on signing young, hungry players that actually want to play for Saints.

Going on strike ? Rojo is owned at 75% by a venture capitalist, they probably tell him what they want him to do when an offer from a club like Utd comes in. They also manage his image rights. He's being told what to do by his owners as likely as not. Sporting have very little say in the matter, if we are to believe what we read the threshold for his contract with them to be interrupted has been reached so it is no longer valid. Deals like these are why 3rd party ownership is illegal in the premier league. You can't have

an agency who are managing the player telling him what to do because they own him.

We got an excellent year out of Lovren and made a profit. Seems worth it to me, regardless of how it ended
