Saganowski sounds up for it

If he is not picked, then I guess we will be looking to sell him. If he is picked, surely that would suggest we can survive financially this season.,

Does being included in the squad make a difference to our rights to sell him or does he have to actually play ?

I forget, do we have a Saga song?

A big cheer when his name is read out again back at SMS sure, but hope we can really give the guy some confidence and show that whatever Lowe etc are doing with finances, we want him here.

There never was much of a saga song. Always thought personally that 'zigger saga zigger saga, oi oi oi' was obvious , but I suspect most of you are too young to remember that chant.

On the OS today.

Let's all hope this is not pure vanilla, and that he actually gets a chance to put his words into action..

He was interviewed by South Today yesterday and spoke well. I don't think he could be tarred with the couldn't care less attitude that some of the other high earners seem to have (had).

Some mixed messages coming out of the OS regarding Saga. I agree he comes across very well in his interview however flipping over to Jan's article regarding the game he gives Saga a great build-up then say's 'I'm not sure if he'll be playing Saturday' (or words to that effect). Could be just the normal bluffing as has been pointed out. Let's wait and see I guess.

I think it's just down to Jan. He said he might not play at Barnsley. I've supported him and like him, but if he decides to choose McGoldrick, or anyone we have over Saga, he's an idiot.

Subject only to his fitness? As he has not played for a few weeks, it might make sense to be on the bench for this match (only)

According to Saga he's not played for two weeks but passed a fitness test (not 'match' fitness of course) on Monday and after 24 games of the full 90 minutes with Aalborg he's declared himself ready to go so don't think the above applies in this case.

do-do-do-do-do-doo

Saganowski

There was a cheerful little ditty posted on here ages ago to the tune of Supercalifragilisticexpialadocious that had my nipper in stitches. Bit of a tonguetwister, but definitely original.

Would you like Saga in the hole?

I wouldn't. Although lone striker may not be his natural role, he holds the ball up well and should bring support players into play much more than McG. Also he will work the opposition defence when they have the ball.

FWIW, I agree with the poster who suggested we sould try Skacel in the hole (once back from suspension, if he's ever considered again after his comments) since he shouldn't be needed at LB now. Otherwise I'd use Lallana or even Surman there.

Personally I think Saga is wasted holding the ball up. He plays best running at players and going down the channels.

Saga's work rate is second to none and we've been crying out for a striker like him.

He's a proven goalscorer at this level and if he's got the desire to do well for us then that's only going to be a good thing.

Poortvliet's comments on the OS are very positive, suggesting Saga will be involved and that he'll play as the lone striker.

Lets just hope Saga rediscovers the form that made Saints pay up to keep him here permanently.

According to Jan he hasn't even decided yet if he will take part tomorrow.

Assume Lowe has not made up his mind for him yet. If Saga does not play then that would be a criminal waste. he really should be just about the first name on the team sheet, and this ****** about him not having played for 2 weeks, crap, hopefully he will be more ready to go than the boysh who are probably tired after last Sunday.

I now believe Saga will be playing next game - the build-up has been too big and too concerted.

Let's hope he delivers.

Who else do you play up front? Its the best option from what we have.

Saying that, I've a horrible feeling that answer will be McGoldrick, with Euell in the hole.

1970s?

Yes-ish. "Zigger zagger. zigger zagger. oi oi oi" was a chant invented in a play in the late 60s about football violence ..a sort of earlier 'Green Street'. It was then taken up by real football crowds in the even later 60s and into the 70s.

Would be good to resurrect it for Saga.

The comments about Lowe picking the team are pointless now.

Wotte and Poortvliet stated clearly that they pick the team, accept full responsibility and wouldn't stay if that wasn't the case.

My point isn't that you should take their word on that, but that they are accepting responsibility. Therefore it's fine to criticise them, blame them or whatever if you don't agree with team selection.

But in a real sense, Lowe does pick the team, by proxy. Or Barclays, if you prefer; else we'd have Rasiak for selection, or Stern John, or several other players that have slipped through the net.

Granted, JP picks the team from the pool of players he has available. But who's to say who makes the decision on who is available..?

Now where's that Jack Cork chappie gone to..? ;)

What have Saints got to lose..? We know that Marek has a hatful of goals in him if he's played properly, or none. Well, the present strikeforce has none or none. No brainer really.

If Marek doesn't start tomorrow then JP really is clueless.

Lowe wasn't responsible for increasing the wage bill to 81% of turnover.

i think rudi may be off, seems to be a bit of conflicting reports

Jan Poortvliet said: “Adam Lallana is the only one who is injured and that is also due to the bad weather.

“Otherwise he would have trained with us but it was not possible for him to test his ankle because of the hard ground.

Full story in today's Daily Echo

and then on the OS it says rudi has picked up a calf strain, will he be off then?

I think he has to actually play? He is allowed to be registered with 3 clubs in one season, but only allowed to play for 2. If he is a substitute and does not get on the pitch, I don't believe that counts, because they use the term fielded for anyone who has deemed to have played.

I am surprised, as by looking at the wages for various players given out by the Echo, that must be their basic wage with a significant further portion coming from bonus. Unless of course those figures are incorrect or we have come to an agreement regarding those bonus payments?

Unless someone else is sold to bring in revenue, I cannot understand the change in policy for allowing him to play. Nothing else has changed financially, so unless we have not had a smidgen of interest from other clubs, it would go against everything that has gone before for this to happen. Unless he is going back to Aalborg, as that would not be breaking any regulations.

That said, we are desperate for someone to put the ball in the back of the net and can only hope we get lucky as when he first arrived at the club.

I doubt that Saga will come back to Aalborg. They wanted to keep him, but could not agree on the economical side.

He made a very slow start to his Aalborg career - along with all the other players that were crowned Danish champions in May. Caretaker manager Bruce Rioch never got going and the team had a 2-2-6 record in the league by early November and . Sagas efforts matched the team effort: he worked tirelessly but didn't find the net before a late September cup game against lower league opposition. Supporters recognised and applauded his effort but the lack of goals was not too popular with the fans...

Aalborg managed to claim a ridiculously easy spot in the Champions League playoff by brushing aside FK Modrica and FBK Kaunas. This earned them games against ManU, Celtic and Villareal. Suddenly Saga looked a much better player than in the Danish league games. In the 6-3 away defeat at Villareal Saga was by far Aalborgs MoM and the supporters were warming to him.

After the Villareal game Rioch was shipped off (the game was lost partly because of tired players and he made a grand total of zero substitutions!) and things took a turn for the better for Aalborg and Saga. Under caretaker manager Kuhn the team did not lose a single game - they got 7 wins and 5 draws!

In the league they claimed 4 wins and 3 draws, in the cup they won 2 games, and in the Champions League they got draws against ManU and Villareal and a victory over Celtic (giving them 3rd spot in the group and knocking Celtic out of european competitions this season). Saga got more goals in this period and by the end of his loan spell the supporters were quite keen on getting him signed. The DoF admitted as much but also said that it was not a likely move as the economical matters were a stumbling block.

And so back to Southampton he went, with 5 goals in 24 games. But counting from when the team got back on track it was 4 goals in 13 games. His confidence should be ok and his match fitness shouldn't be too bad either after playing a lot the last few months. Aalborg fans actually complained that they should have received money for getting Saga match fit, so all in all the loan move might prove to be a good move by SFC. If he starts banging them in regularly, I'd be quite happy ;-)
