Gloucester Saint Posted 23 April, 2025 Posted 23 April, 2025 Here’s a ‘showing my age’ one and related to the overtaking posts, except this was horses rather than cars (and it was not the horses that were the issue whatsoever). Just slowly overtook in the car two horses out riding to go to one of the local pubs my wife likes, no issues there at all. We are passing and one of the young female riders late teens/early 20s is vaping whilst riding the horse! Poor horse having to breathe in candy floss flavour vape or whatever it was!
AlexLaw76 Posted 23 April, 2025 Posted 23 April, 2025 I once had a cyclist cycle into me (from behind) on the path, and then blamed me for not hearing him approach. I needed to "sort my fucking hearing out"...whilst walking.....on the path....with a road right next to me...that had a fucking cycle lane on it. He was one of the all the gear, no idea cyclist...so fat and grim in his lycra, I was amazed he could breath given how much of him to stuffed in his leotard.
Gloucester Saint Posted 23 April, 2025 Posted 23 April, 2025 I had a cyclist shoot in front of our bonnet at the crossroads in St Denys opposite the car dealership, when the lights had turned green our side and had long since turned red the cyclist’s side coming down the hill towards Riverside. She had to have blatantly shot through a red light.🚦 As cyclists can’t have points applied as a car driver would, they should receive a higher fine to balance it if caught on camera or by traffic cops.

Just to be clear, some cyclists are fucking twats and if they have an accident probably deserve it. Their stupidity, arrogance, or tendency towards the suicidal have an adverse influence on the attitudes of drivers that impacts on sensible, safe, cyclists trying to get around safely and co-operatively amongst fast movinge blocks of steel. rallyboy Posted 23 April, 2025 Posted 23 April, 2025 I've seen fucking idiots walking their dogs up cycle lanes, I've seen suicidal cyclists jumping lights, and I've seen motorists nearly hitting cyclists because they can't drive properly - the world is full of fuckwits of all flavours. Everyone needs to share space sensibly and stop thinking they personally own all of it. 6

Fair point, and the Highway Code says to treat them as another car in terms of space which I do. Cyclists who also hold a driving licence I suspect tend to be safer cyclists.

And how do you police the issue of checking insurance ? Not dismissing the matter, we have insurance, but there is often comparison made to cars and "road tax" and registration, which some seem to think can be easily transposed onto cycling. Good in theory, almost impossible in practice. Edited 24 April, 2025 by badgerx16

I think anyone of any age riding or driving something on the road that could cause an accident, or damage, should be able to demonstrate competence to do that and be insured to protect the risk to others. Policing it, now that's another matter but I fail to see how someone riding a 50cc moped has to demonstrate competence and be insured and someone riding a bike capable of similar speed doesn't. 1

I agree with you. However i dont think it's an issue of competence. A lot of cyclists seem to be middle, aged, middle class blokes who have this aura of arrogance about them. They seem to think they own the road, cycling two or three abreast. The way they sit around outside pubs and cafes in their lycra, the endless posting on facebook and instagram. The two biggest cycling enthusiast in my last company were also the two biggest twats, coincidence? 3
Picard Posted 24 April, 2025 Posted 24 April, 2025 When I was at school in the 70's there was a cycle proficiency test you could take where a copper came and gave some lessons followed by a test. Does that still exist?

They all have to take their bikes to school, get the bike assessed (mainly for size to ensure it's right), they right around the school grounds first to get assessed for a few things, then spend 4 days on local roads in small groups. It was nice last year actually as I jumped on my mountain bike too and cycled through the woods at the back of my house to his school with him and back,

Without insurance against their monumental risk to other, insured, road users. 2
