Like him or not, Stephens needs to be the first name on the team sheet for this. About the only one I would trust to get his head in where it hurts.

Obviously needs 4 at the back.

Thank God no Bazunu going to Fratton Park.

People clambering for Romeu must be mad.

Would happily take a draw.

Last time I went there, for a testimonial, they kept us in for an hour whilst the bad boys threw lumps of concrete over the wall at us until cleared off by the police. Are you sure you want to stay longer in that dump than necessary?

Not so much cleared off by the police, more heard they were letting the DEF out and ran and hid, in their desperation to get away and hide they ended up smashing windows and doors as they tried to break into nearby houses and shops such was their fear. Typical Pompey, hardest firm in the world when the OB are there, set new 100m records when they’re not.

Shame that this game isn't an evening kick off. This season, Saints have a points per game (PPG) of 2.3 for games played in the evening (w5, d1, l1), but have less than 1 PPG for those games played in the day (w4, d8, l9).

If our evening matches form was across the season, we'd be 7 points clear at the top of the Championship ! Alternatively, we'd be in the bottom 3, if our day form was across the season.

I think that this anomaly, is because we had quite a few evening games during Tonda's hot period when he first took over.

Not sure that it means much, but I thought that it made a nice change to discussing XG.

Shit or bust for me. A draw is not acceptable. We’ve already dropped two points against these shithouses with that pathetic display at home.

Remember everyone, they take football much more seriously than we do

So just like every other city and town with a football league club they talk about football in the pubs and clubs and at work.

Is the reason they think they are so special because not many of them have ever been anywhere else?

I don't know where they get these myths from - that they are a special club with special support. They are no different to anyone else or any other place.  The reality is they are probably closer to being one of the smaller clubs in the football league by support than one of the bigger clubs.

And just like any stadium or ground the support can be great or terrible depending on who you are playing, how you are playing and everything else going on around the club.

At least we don't seem to have these delusions about who or what we are.

This chap has witnessed the derby 29 times, going back to August 1960 when Saints won 5-1 in a sign of things to come. I imagine there may be a handful of us on here who have similarly extensive derby experience, although might be tricky finding anyone with 30 derbies just yet - that next previous one was held in 1927.

Stephens wins few headers for a centre-back and often loses his man in the box.

I'm a passionate Saints fan but truly struggle w the level of hatred on here for Pompey. Football's tribal, yes, but this is more like cannibalism.  Some secret facts about their players, managers and supporters:  they have DNA.  Their hearts beat and they sleep and wake up every morning just like you do. They have jobs and kids and dreams.   My personal vote... determined rivalry yes, disgust and loathing... really?!  not needed.    I just want a pulsating game - and yes, a memorable saints victory.

Very sensible, but may I ask were you born in Southampton, is it a passion for you? Do you ever toss and turn at night reliving  the game and how things went wront and why or fret/worry about the next game. Sadly, im 66 and Saints burn into me so deeply. Im not rabid anti Pompey as in a way i respect them as it is a tough city and they like us support the team, but what rankles me most, is their belief that they are some sort of super fan base

My favourite is when Stephens wins a header,  but it goes straight into the air rather than away from goal.

According to Opta, the percentage of ariel duels that our centre halves win are:

Quarshie - 59%

THB - 56%

Wood - 46%

Stephens - 43%

A "very good " percentage in the Championship is around 70%+ won, good is around 60%+ won.  As always, stats need to be used carefully, but these do seem to back up my own impression of our defence's ability to defend crosses.

Strangely though, I'd probably prefer Jack to Quarshie for Sunday's game. I think even with his obvious limitations, some games call for experience and this is probably one of those matches.

  • Expecting a great away support in a tight stadium
  • The rest of the atmosphere will depend on the game
  • It is an important game for both
  • This is the most beautiful fixture of the year
  • We will need to dig deep at times, and hopefully we will make them do more
  • It means everything to win there. I have been here for 6 months, I know it means everything
  • I feel it. The boys need to recover but we feel the energy of this game
  • I watched the last time played them. We went very direct very early
  • That is a way to start, but in terms of quality we need to find moments to bring quality on the ground also
  • We never did that much in the last game
  • We are progressing as a group. We had too many transfers in the summer and it takes time
  • Reality is that it does not just click immediately.
  • The players are living and breathing the game, it needs to be a habit to win
  • We do everything to win, we need to leave it on the pitch
  • I am confident and positive that we have a group of players in the middle of a process
  • What I say now does not matter, we have to do it on the pitch on Sun
  • We need to see how Ross recovers, we do have an extra day so we will see
  • We knew 60 mins in the week was his maximum
  • Bragg is a consideration and we have Charles coming back. We will look at all opportunities
  • Charles played slightly more advanced, this is not the idea going forward, but we needed to do that against Sheffield
  • I want cool heads from my players on Sun, we need to take the emotion from the game
  • There needs to be clarity with the players
  • Of course I know the history of this fixture. Coming to a club you must understand the culture of that club
  • We need to work on Leo’d heading, he should have scored a couple this season.
  • He is the type of player he needs the ball at his feet, but we must recognise the threat of the balls into the box from the other side
  • He is a winner, he wants more goals, he will be important on Sun

Oh good - we're in the middle of another process and we still haven't gelled as a team after the summer transfer activity. Looks like Martin left a copy of his big book of excuses behind when he left. Living and breathing the game sounds like the new version of "the players trained really well this week".

It's a fucking cult isn't it? Reminds me of the bollocks Liverpool fans do. None of it is based in any sort of fact and it's like watching swivel headed loons patting each on other on the back for how special they are when they outside world can see all they've done is eaten an entire box of crayons and shat themselves.

He mentioned keeping the ball on the ground twice which leads me to think Stewart will not play from the start. It also leads me to think he will revert to 3 centre backs. Two big mistakes if it pans out that way in my opinion.

Has anyone with a ticket that can no longer attend spoken to the club about the ticket being used by someone else? A mate has a ticket but he's now out of the country. The club have previously said that tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable, but that's just a waste of a ticket!

How does this work if the player passing the ball is behind the intended recipient?

You pass so the player runs onto the ball. We always got told you shouldn't be facing your own goalkeeper when receiving a pass.

Strikes me as the sort of person who only wants to win if it's fair and thinks it'd be hollow if we got a poor decision in our favour.

Personally I think the best way of winning would be with a 98th minute winner that's 3 yards offside and punched into the net.

Don't forget the dock strike classic. It's almost boring now but you have to be extra fucking thick to believe a story about the Royal Navy going on strike.

My personal favourite though has to be the one about us stealing all their food. Will never get old that.

Thanks, my friend. Some well considered points. Just to push back on a couple, however:

- research into the DNA of Pompey fans has come back inconclusive; leading discourse has drawn a link between decades of impregnating of fish (in particular, the skate) with mutations in DNA;

- whilst research has concluded that the hearts of Pompey fans do, indeed, beat, recent studies have highlighted how their heart rates actually increase when thinking about their sisters; longitudinal studies continue to track this phenomenon

- evidence actually suggests that the vast majority of Portsmouth fans do not have jobs. In fact, the only study that argued that they do was based on an analysis of three industries in Portsmouth: tattoo shops, pubs and fancy dress shops and it turns out that all of these industries are booming because of John Westwood.

- whilst there are some quantifiable studies which seem to suggest Portsmouth FC fans have children, we might highlight that these studies were based on observations of their (predominantly male) fans bringing children to the games. More recent evidence, however, suggests that these were, in fact, either dates or cases of grooming.

- they do indeed have dreams (see above comment regarding sisters)

I hope this provides some clarity

What a load of bollocks. They’re fucking insufferable when it comes to football, the bestest in the land, myths about their superiority as supporters, the trophy that they bought while ripping off businesses that supported them. Redknapp. That piss stained nonce with the bell and the hat. Wankers.

And I grew up on the SO31/PO14 border, I’ve got quite a few mates who are skates. Just can’t talk to them about football. Most of them supported someone else until they were promoted into the Prem in 2002 or whatever it was, were ‘diehard’ ST holders for a while until they regained their normal status as a struggling football league club, and now they hardly go. There’s nothing not to hate about them.
