who ever decided to loan out saga should be put down

Couldn't agree more. He is a quality player who wants to do his best for saints. If we'd had his goals in the first half of the season we could be in touch with the rest of the teams above us rather than almost adrift in the bottom three. One of the lowest scoring teams in the division = at the bottom of the league - it's not rocket science.

Getting rid of our three established strikers simultaneously at the beginning of the season has really bitten us in the arse.

Well done Lowe you *****.

This must rank as one of the most reckless and irresponsible actions that the board has ever undertaken.

Yes we have no money blah blah blah but you can be damn sure Barclays et al would rather have us in the CCC than League 1

We couldn't afford to pay them but should have got in more experienced and better replacements than Peckhart and Robertson. Plenty of lower league strikers around who could have done a job for us.

Also starting the season with no experienced fullbacks was crazy :-(

Didnt take long;)

Agreed we wasted any money we did save on complete and utter cack.

How long has this forum been telling these top people they have no idea.

I am surprised Saga makes the effort and yet he was treated very badly by this club.

It's the bizarre world of football because he made very little effort after we treated him well and gave him a contract!

Call me old fasdhioned but it could well have something to do with the fact that we signed him at this point 2 years ago and he did brilliantly and earned himself a well-paid contract as it seemed he had enough goals in him to get us promoted. He was hardly prolific last season, bagging something like 6 goals. Couple that with the fact that he gave a good account of himself in the Euro Championships and then a club came in for him and gave him the opportunity to play in the Champions League against Man Utd, Celtic and Villarreal probably on even more money as well. I know what I would do if I had no major allegiance to Southampton.

It's great we've got him back and fantastic to see him showing those around him how its done but to say we should never have sent him out on loan it a little short-sighted. I'm sure there were many, many more factors than Rupert Lowe wanting to stitch the club up as a few people who have agreed with the original post have alluded to.

Fookin ridiculous.

So what would you do to reduce costs then?

It is not easy something had to be done unfortunately to reduce costs and Saga played well in Euro 2008 so he was loaned

I think Saganowski is our best player overall but we signed John and Euell last season so he did not play much.

Surely Rasiak and Saga were OK as strikers for last year with BWP in reserve.

If Euell and John were not signed and Crouch did not want Euell anyway we may have saved at least £2m in wages over two seasons maybe more so the cost cutting this year would not have been so great ,

Results may have been better and attendances up.

But the last board thought that if they bought in players success would be guarnteed and a takeover would take place.

John B, the truth doesnt go down very well with a lot of these people. Rupert Lowe shouldnt be totally absolved from any blame but for a lof them to suggest Leon Crouch is this clubs saviour is a very misguided notion... in my opinion of course.

John...as for reducing costs...

forecast

peckhart

robertson

smith

pulis

gasmi

if all of their wages are still below mareks (including agent fees etc) and it was cheaper to have that load of crud than marek then I may well get your gist..

but loaning/signing that lot...wages, fees, agent fees surely cannot be less than paying saga a wage

I think DD has answered in the exact same manner as i would've done to your question.

OK you maybe right I dont know

You are posting with hindsight

I agree I dont know why Pulis and Gasmi were signed.

i dont think it is hindsight at all..i would be amazed to find more than a handful of saints fans that thought all this with those (terrible) players and saga was good business...

I know saga was not great last season.but peckhart pulis etc...WTF

'who ever decided to loan out saga should be put down'

Does anybody know who it was?

makes you farking sick to think about it..

not so long ago we actually created alot of chances in a game..only for the likes of mcgoldrick and lallana to be inexperienced (and poor in some cases) to be in the right place..or even able to finish..

It was NOT the LAST board, it was the one BEFORE THAT who wasted all the money. The one which WILDE put in place.

He (WILDE) has now put two CEOs in place and between them they have screwed this club.

And, as TDD said:

Forecast

Peckhart

Robertson

Smith

Pulis

Gasmi

Plus whatever fees have been paid to Kim van der Walles; compensation for Portaloo (I will NEVER believe he bought his own contract out at his old club); wages for coaches sat on gardening leave; wages and expenses for both chairmen (Crouch never took a penny); etc; etc; etc.

Add all this together and we could probably not only have retained the services of an international CF for the first half of the season (we had 3 to chose from, and Saga would have been my first choice), but we may have even been able to bring an experienced RB or LB!!!!!!

In which case results probably would have been better, meaning attendences would be up and we would be in a better position financially.

I never really understood why we brought in Stern John and Jason Euell when we should have been cutting our costs (and wage bill) insted of adding expensive players to the squad

Euell has turned out to be an expensive free transfer that's for sure

and we probably got Stern John instead of a sell on clause in the Kenwyne Jones deal

Lee Hoos and Jim Hone really were cr*p at buying players - and managing a football club

I'd have played Saga over John every time - a far better passer, much better striker and a player who actually moves off the ball and defends from the front - a much better team player by far

After Burley got us to the play-offs he ruled the roost.Got whatever he wanted or rolled about on the floor screaming until he was sick.

indeed...

he was a disgrace the season after the playoffs...he did the bare minimum in getting us there...unlucky on penalties..

but the season after...was a total disgrace..i hope he royally screws the scottish national team up and never works again

Scene one:

Barclays say........you can't play Saga you can't afford his wages.

Rupert nods

Scene two (what might have happened if Lowe has stayed in the wilderness)

Barclays say.....you can't play Saga you can't afford his wages.

Crouch says...Fine I'll pay them myself.

*************************************************

Crouch + Pearson + Saga = Comfortable mid table for our club

Lowe+Wilde+JP = 2nd from bottom in Jan

All in IMHO of course!

Mmmmmm Rupert or Leon, let me think :-k............Whatever Leons faults are, I'd sooner trust him than Lowe or Wilde.

Just a quick point ... How many people on here were arguing he should be gotten rid of because he had only scored 3 last year?

Secondly and arguably the time away has improved his confidence and has brought him back with renewed enthusiasm?

Two sides to any story I suppose though I always said it was daft to loan him out if we could afford him.

The financial reason for loaning him out has been pretty much shot in the foot. If he had played the whole season I'm sure the crowds would be about 1000 to 2000 up on average, which would be enough to pay his wages. But I think playing in the Champions League has given him a lot of confidence which can only help our chances of survival.

A pity we dont have enough games left for him to make a difference.......
