Got to say that, despite some on here dissing the new website, for once they seem to have come up with a real gem here...

This is the quality of article that I feel we've been missing for SO many years...linking old with current staff for example (e.g. Puckett). I applaud wholeheartedly this renewed outlook and I really hope that MLT/Pinnacle either have something to do with this, or they recognise that this is the way forward. Well done Saints. :)

Agreed, much better from the OS. It may be that Pinnacle are preparing the ground to unveil Kevin Keegan as manager next Friday ; - ) stranger things have happened...

.....or David Puckett as manager ..is that strange enough for you?

Having re-read my rather hasty post, I think I should set the record straight as this was not meant to be rude about DP.

Dave Puckett was one of the small band of So'ton schoolboys (former Merry Oak School) who had a career in the Saints.

He debuted for the Reserves at 18 (1980) and was among the bunch of youngsters who provided a good strike force which included; Ian Juryeff, Joe Blochel and Steve Moran. He was unfortunate enough to be reserve no.9 in Lawrie Mac's 1980's

" dream teams " at a time when the regulars were; Mick Channon, Frank Worthington and Joe Jordan.

With the rest of the forward line likely to be; Keegan, Ball, Armstrong and Danny Wallace...DP spent much of his time on the bench. He did manage around a dozen apps. each season and frequently scored points-winning goals. Indeed he scored TWICE against a good Arsenal side in Jan.82 - at a time when Saints were at the top of Div.1 (Prem). Throughout his 6 seasons at the club he was unlucky to be second choice to the goal-poaching Steve Moran, (who netted 99 times in the same period and who often found it harder to miss than to score !) ..tough luck for David.

McMenemy often used young players, but never too many in the same match. Dave Puckett could be called a good club man - even if he was so young at the time, and injuries led to his transfer out - (just a few months before Moran,) in the aftermath of McMenemy's departure. However, he did contuniue a career in the lower leagues and even played local football until he was around 40. It's nice to see " locals " still associated with the club and a record of 59 apps.(+53 subs) and 16 goals looks very favourable against some of his fellow reserve pals who scarcely ever got a game in the first team.

In between his " bench sitting " for the first team, his Reserve apps. brought him around 60 goals in this period.

(Hope the new regime keeps him on, but don't think he's a candidate for first team job.)

Scrutinising people's posts with a fine-toothed comb alert....

Is that a genuine "ITK" wink or a "reading between the lines 2+2" wink?

I was living in London when Saints signed Keegan. I think we played Arsenal at Highbury in the second or third game of the season. There were massive queues of Arsenal (yes Arsenal) supporters wanting to get in to see the Saints and Keegan in particular. I think it was 1-1.

Who was the Sheik that Puckett was on about. Sounds like he became an instant Saints fan.

Someone should have tapped him up (Keegan, Channon) in our hour of need.

Funnily enough that's what I was thinking. Though if they can't even remember which city they were in the chances of getting the right sheikh are pretty slim too...

In Nick Hornsby's Book "Fever Pitch" he mentions this game and questions why so there were so many people for a Southampton game (he didn't seem to realise it was all down to Keegan's presence in our team)

I rememeber going to Sunderland on the saturday following the Arsenal game. We won 2-1 and the ground was full with over 40,000 fans at a time when they normally got 30,000 for thier home games.

I'd given up reading the OS but I really enjoyed reading this and hope we get more of the same. It would be hard to convey to younger Saints fans the magnitude of Saints signing the top player in Europe. I remember before the news broke LmcM opened a fete in Netley and my dad came back and said LMcM had made some cryptic comment about signing KK. We didn't take it seriously at the time but low and behold he signed him up a short time later. If we have some money behind us next season I really would love to see him back as manager.

For that to happen, Keegan would have to say yes.

I heard a story once about how we signed KK. I was told that Lawrie got KK in his office and locked the door telling KK that he is not leaving untill he has signed for us. No idea if its true or not but its one of those stories that people kinda like to believe.

Probably apocryphal but I'm prepared to believe anything positive about Saints....and he signed, that's a fact.

Big Mac was even more devious than that. He asked KK to bring him back some sort of special kind of lamp or something from Hamburg and drop it off to his New Forest home when he came back in England. When KK turned up with it Lawrie locked all the doors and said you are not leaving until you agree to sign for the Saints!! Job's a good un :)

KK had just been voted European footballer of the year in 78 AND 79, so it would be like us signing Cronaldo today!!

It was a fantastic bit of business but there is no chance of something ever happening like that again as agents and fees are so ridiculous. I think Bally said LM did something similar.

LOL brilliant. I knew I had heard something like that. Can you imagine Ronaldo and his hissy fits putting up with that kind of negotiation? He would be straight on the phone to his Mum! they dont make them like they used to thats for sure ;)

Good stuff.

Would be nice if the OS did some more decent historical stuff which may educate some of the younger fans, and keep them believing in the club and its history. As well as providing up-to-date useful information, and not too much corporate PR guff.

While in nostalgia mode...my abiding memory of David Armstrong is when walking over to take a corner he gets the inevitable "baldy" chants from opposition supporters, he stops, bends his knees, peers into an imaginary mirror and theatrically combs and smoothes his non existent hair before taking a corner (from which I'd like to say we scored).

Luv it! I Luv it!

It's the sort of thing we asked for before Lowe came along again and used it as a propaganda tool.

So nice to see we're back to promoting our history rather than a failing plc!

True...Lawrie told me the same in Lymington not so long ago...

My sister knitted KK some baby clothes for his new daughters way back - we stayed behind at The Dell for the MOTD interviews after the ManU game (you could back then)...KK took them, thanked my sister, then two weeks later, My sister received a printed gold embossed thank you card from KK and his wife....

Pure, pure class....you can't replace memories like that...
