Some good opinions there. Generally they seem to rate him

He looked capable of better than Yeovil tbf...

Decent player tbf. Good on the ball, and technically sound. Could certainly do better than Yeovil.

To be fair to Harding going forward he wasn't all that, but defensively he had two of the most highly rated wingers in his pocket at both Derby (Kris Commons) and Burnley (Chris Eagles). He is an average Championship left back, and would be a good League 1 left back.

I must have been watching a different team towards the end of last season - as far as I was concerned he was possibly the best (if not definitely top 3) of our players in the last 8-10 games.

I would sign him up personally.

I live in Ipswich now and every one I asked about him say's he's class and can't understand why his contract wasn't renewed here, although there was a rumour he slept with mcgiltons wife.

Keane wouldnt care about that! McG isnt manager anymore, neither is his wife.

is his wife fit?

Harding played in the infamous 3-4 defeat by Leeds a few seasons ago. I always remembering watching the match and thinking that their Left Back was extremely poor and Theo had him time after time.

However, looking up the teams on the Internet it suggests that Harding may have been in midfield. Have a look at Saints' 2nd goal and the way Theo walks past the left back. Is that Harding ?

Theo was good in his time here, but I cant help but thinking the left back helped make him look good in this instance. I just hope my memory is wrong, as there are few times when I remember a left back as vividly as that day for being so inept .....

If you listen to the commentary, he says "Walcott gets away from Kilgalon". Harding gave away the penalty for the 3rd tho.

Their left back that day was Matthew kilgallon i think (now with Sheff United) and he hasn't turned out too badly!

I watched Harding on one of readings TV games this year, he was brilliant and from the moment i heard he was avaliable on a free...i thought he'd be a great capture for us - but i expected him to go to a champ side.

A Reading supporting mate just said...

Really rated him, I wanted us to sign him up, but Rodgers wanted som Chelski youngster as cover instead! He played very well in all the games I saw him in. He'll ben an excellent signing in League One, I'm sure of it.

No fee and only a 2 year contract isn't too much of a gamble and could turn out to be inspired.

Oh it is that. I'm chuffed to bits. That's the left side sorted with Fish, Holmes and Harding - play any two, and we will reap dividends. Best left side pairing since Bridge and Marsden days. Seriously, this is a good signing and signals Southampton FC mean business. Pardew has me on-side with this signing.

Harding was assigned to stop Theo when it was 3-1 and although Harding was a bit cynical, it was a tactic from Blackwell that turned the game (along with a terrible ref and mass panic from Saints midfield and back 4).

Will be nice to have a left back who can actually defend. First since Le Saux?

Since he signed we've also had:

Van Damme

Bernard

Higgy

Brennan

Bale

Makin

Wright

Skacel

Vignal

Surman

O'Halloran

Molyneux

Mills

play for the first team at LB. I think Vignal was just about the best of that lot.

So they thought he was cack, but then again thats leeds fans for you, so welcome and Dan and best of luck on the south coast.

Hmmm I don't read it that way at all...

Despite a poor start, I thought he was starting to show some signs of development before Blackwell dropped him.

...

good signing IMO

always thought he'd have been good for us had he been sent away to bulk up a bit

...

good signing in my opinion and guaranteed to score against us.

...

Could do a job

Better than Bale????

I think Vignal is looking for a new club, HCDAJFU

Bale, from what i remember was not a great defensive left back.

Going forward yeah. Set pieces yeah(on and off) But as a defender...... not so sure.

I think that was the original post about LeSaux being the best defensive left back and we have not had one as good since.

Id probably agree with that.

Agreed. I could never truly work out why Bale was classed as a defender at all!
