If the worst had happened

When it looked like Saints might go under, unthinkable I know, did anyone else wonder who they could possibly support in the future?

I, personally, would have been unable to even consider another team, although geographically Liverpool would have been a logical choice but the passion would never have been the same.

I suppose it would have been like a bereavement to some extent and who knows what would have happened after a suitable period of mourning.

Would others have chosen London clubs, Bournemouth or even supported Totton or Eastleigh in the hope they could break into the big time?

Also, if, like me, you've got a SFC tattoo would you have it laser blasted?

What a white knuckle ride it's been!

I actually had this discussion with my housemates. We are London based and one is a huge Gills fan so that could have been an option for me. With respect to the teams close to me Charlton and Millwall (shudder) are also close.

If I was going to be a glory guy the London team I would go for is Arsenal mainly for the Theo connection and the football they play is quite entertaining.

I would not have followed another football team, although as I live within walking distance of Eastleighs ground I may have occaisionaly gone to watch them. I would have spent more time watching Rugby (trips to 'Quins and/or London Irish I expect) and any Speedway that I could get to. I fell out of love with big-time football a long time ago but love watching Saints. After 50 years, they`re a difficult habit to break!!

I used to watch Leeds when I was at Univ. there and still have a soft spot for them, but they're too far away to support except from behind a TV screen. Locally i might go for Brighton - they've had a tough ride over the past few years and I admire the persistence of their fans..........

I live about 500 yards from the Emirates stadium so it would have to be them i think..

I thought you were going to support them anyway. (If it had been you who said they were now able to get a season ticket with Arsenal a couple months back when admin first happened)

I wouldn't have supported anyone tbh, I'm a one man team.

I know LOADS of people who are life lon fans of clubs who are season ticket holders at plymouth argyle

I was quite shocked but I guess it happens when you live a distance away from southampton/your clubs town

Are you the (other) bloke in a Saints shirt I've seen around Holloway then? I ended up stalking someone all the way from Saint Mary's to the Waitrose there a couple of seasons ago.

I would also be in the Arsenal camp if worse had come to worse. But it would never have been the same.

I used to discuss this (in the pub of course) on a regular basis with a friend who is a Birmingham fan.

We decided that it would have to be 1 of the Big four. Like me, he knows the frustrations of not being a glory supporter, of having all the plastics take the mick. of losing more matches than you win etc etc. Normally you just acquire your team by a process of osmosis and you can never change. If Saints were to disappear & I could choose a team we agreed that there was no point in choosing to support a proper football team like saints (or in his case Brum) - I might as well choose to be a glory hunting supporter of one of the Big 4.

It couldn't be Arsenal - because they have not won anything for yonks and yonks and yonks and what is the point of being a glory supporter if you don't win anything?

When we lived in Liverpool (both of us went to uni there) we tended to watch Everton & not Liverpool so it could not be them.

Chelsea could well go bust if Roman were to leave... and having lived through 1 administration I couldn't bear to go through another.

ManU have carp fans who everyone hates so I couldn't support them.

so in the end it was a good job that it was all just hypothetical.

I did and decided football could never be the same if Saints went under! Would have changed everything for me.

I live very close to Bath City FC so would get there a few times in the season and I may have taken a mild interest in AFC Bournemouth as they were the first team I saw as a youngster.....but I wouldn't be able to get into following either of them properly.

Very glad we are still 'alive' !!!!!!

would have been nottingham forest...but never would have been the same...

Mine would have been Aston Villa, simply because my Grand Parents lived about a half mile from the ground. They was a lot of Villa support amongst the family so I guess I would have plumped fr them, I can tell you for sure that I would never be a Man. U, Chelski fan.

I would have supported whichever entity that would go on to rise from the ashes.

Agreed! It would have been strange to be "neutral" otherwise. I like the Arsenal style of play though and the Theo connection (Also George Curtis, Don Rogers-anyone remember?) Failing that it would be Cowes Sports when I'd saved up enough to pay Red Funnel to take me "home."

Is that the Don Rogers that scored for Swindon when they won the league cup against Arsenal?

Well my missus is a Norwich girl and fan, so i might've sided with them, but most of my mates support Arsenal, so it could've been them. So, so glad Saints were saved, that's all i can say!

Bl00dy hell, so is mine....The in laws still love up that way so Carrow Road has been an away trip for the last 10 years.

Back on topic;

I don't think I could ever support another club with the same commitment that I have for Saints. Even if Saints had disappeared, supporting another club would have been like cheating on the missus. I'd have probably half heartedly gone to see Eastleigh play 'cos their nickname is the Spitfires (and my Granddad used to work at the Supermarine factory in Hamble during WWII making these 'planes) and I also have loads of mates in Eastleigh to share a few jars with.

Happily this is all irrelevant now....:D

Whatever team rose from the ashes..., and since the mrs and father in law are gooners and from north london id of sided with them abit more as well (they take me to the emirates for free, gotta love free footy), but a saint for life either way!! and the tattoo would of (and still is) stayed firmly on my leg!

Mine would have been Fulham, QPR or Chelsea as my family are from that area and support those teams, though like others, my heart wouldn't have been it and there would be not half as much passion for the team so I would have just strayed off to just like football in general!

No. Saints forward/ winger after ww2, sold to Arsenal, but returned to saints when old and slow, before the likes of T. Paine and co appeared on the scene.I forget the exact dates;old age catching up.

I think the two vaginas and three boobs on girls from that part of the world is what swung it for me! :)

Of course, at least us and them will still meet this season, and i had someone to share my grief during relegation!

O have a soft spot for Salisbury (my old home town) & I've been to watch Havant & Waterlooville a few times, but no-one would come close. It would be like being widowed - I'd either pine away, reminiscing about past glories, or squander it all on a brassy new floozy - Chelsea, maybe, or Man City. But it would never be quite the same

I would have been the same as a few others on here and waited to see what arose from the ashes in similar fashion to Wimbledon. I love watching football and still wach MOTD for my Premiership fix but I couldn't have the same passion to support any other team outside of Southampton.

I couldn't support another English club, cheering on someone who I would once have been wishing us to beat just wouldn't be right.

I've made trips abroad to see foreign teams play and would adopt one of them.

I've driven Gelsenkirchen and back in the same day to see Schalke play, so could plump for them. Also, I've got Portuguese friends who are all Porto mad and offer to put me up any time I want to hop on a cheap flight to watch them play.

May have followed Chelsea as they were my Dads team when he was growing up in London before he started taking me to the Dell. or Celtic although expensive to follow from down here.

If I had the Money I would Leave going to live games for International breaks and Tournamnets and watch Engalnd home and away!

Still wouldnt be the same, and if I had the money I would have do both, Saints and England Home and away anyway.
