Niemi to Pompey

That's a sickener.

He can handle being Number Two to David James but the way Pompey are going (shipping players out left, right and centre) he may well end up as Number One, and I don't think he's durable enough to handle a full season. Especially a full season behind the kind of sh*tty defence and losing record they're going to have.

I don't think I could stomach Niemi turning out in the Pompey blue.

I hear you, Hypo.

But when (not "if") they get relegated, we can bring him back as our GK coach and give him a tracksuit with "Agent Antii" on the back.

Just the thought of that makes it a little more palatable for me.

If he goes then I'll be a bit disappointed but it won't change my opinion of him. Niemi is arguably the best keeper ever to wear a Saints shirt and fans should never forget his contribution to our club.

If he joins P*mpey, then so be it. It's possible that David Coles has had a word with him and tempted him out of retirement, and maybe Niemi likes the idea of getting one last pay-cheque before hanging up his boots for good?

Whatever happens, the guy was first-class for us and he should be remembered for the fantastic performances he produced during his time here, not for sitting on the bench at P*mpey for a season, picking up a nice pay-cheque in the process.

Anti must think very seriously before agreeing to a move like this imo.

Assuming that the panic selling continues, he may end up as No1 behind a very poor defence. Where will those fickle bunch point the finger when it all falls apart. I would hate to hear them slating him.

Anyway, West Ham are after a decent 2nd choice keeper now aren't they?

Pompey must be really desperate to bring a keeper with a dodgy wrist out of retirement, even if it IS Niemi.

Doubtful he'll end up having to play, and doubt he'll still be as good as he was unfortunately, if he does end up having to play.

Let the Skates pay his pension for him I say ^^

If Anti gets to go there and gets a decent pay day at the expence of the skates for warming thier bench then good luck to him. Never forget, he gave us his best years, they will be getting second best.

Interesting link on that page from a Pompey fan on thier current situation with some pretty damming comments too:

FFS if that happened I would be really upset.

it would be a massive kick in the nuts and stomach to watch him play for them. :(

No worse than Channon playing there.

Simple fact is he played for us at his prime when he was one of the best gk's in Europe. Now he's 37 and coming out of retirement he might play for them.Says it all about the relative merits of the two clubs over the last fecade.

Anyway, West Ham are after a decent 2nd choice keeper now aren't they?

Actually I think we might need one of those as well.

The guy is a professional footballer and must go where he can find employment.

I would and so would most people if they're honest.

Are people expecting him to be unemployed and not support his family rather than offend the sensitivities of certain fans in what, to him, is a foreign country?

Get real lads!

Some players, who have served Southampton F.C. with legend-like status can get away with playing for our local rivals, others can't.

I will be sad to see Niemi go to Pompey, but i won't hate him for doing it.In fact it is probably a sad reflection of exactly where the blue brigade are financially, even with their "take-over".As someone else said "Over to you agent Niemi"

And coupled with that the request has probably come via David Coles, his mentor.

Who is going to file this under bollócks, who is genuinely concerned and who couldn't give a toss?

This is the sort of " non-story " that annoys me because it raises questions that really aren't anything to do with Saints. As a former Saints player he did not have a contract clause forbidding him to play for any particular team.

Antti Niemi was a class act, (and was often match-winner for Saints.)

He left because he was a Prem. keeper who ended up in a CCC team (Saints) and was still bale to preform.

After his injury he was forced to retire when the elite of top keepers are still able to be match winners, and that was sad.

Now that he has the chance to get some occasional action, who would deny hom that?

Sitting on the Pompey bench for maybe 36 games won't be a problem for him or his fitness.

I'm sorry if the P*mpey haters want to paint him as a traitor, because I only have good memories of his time with Saints.

Fans who don't like that should be sure to plan their journey to Brighton - via Guildford....

...so as not to be forced to drive down the M27!

I couldn't give a toss quite frankly. Peter Shilton was by the best goalie we ever had, and Ian Turner was the man between the posts when we actually won the cup.

He's not good enough for us now, if he can get a game with a smaller club good luck to him.

Agent Neimi!!!!!

He did turn Poopey down and join Fulham when he was match fit, good luck to him. I am sure their fans will remind him that he was once a "Scummer" and then probably smash their city up again.:butthead:

Mick Channon played for Pompey. He's still a hero to me.

Quite right! Bobby Stokes went to Fartton a year after winning the Cup for us. Did anybody feel disappointed about that and hate him. Players have been transferred between the clubs for as long as I can remember. No big deal really. It`s what they do when they are with us that really counts.

I would be totally gutted if that happened. Niemi is my favourite player in my life time and I have many fond memories of him - this would some what destroy those memories!

It just shows you that your judgement is probably suspect if you think that many footballers have a loyalty to a particular club.

It is just a job to them no emotion like you have for SFC
