The Alan Ball Stand

St. Jason

Recommended Posts

Surely such a legend, England and the Mighty Red & White should be honoured by us??

Ipswich today open the "Sir Bobby Robson" stand...........The kingsland Stand or The Alan Ball stand????

In fact why not go the whole hog, Matt Le Tissier (Itchen) Bobby Stokes (Chapel) Alan Ball (Kingsland) Terry Paine (Northam)

Kill 2 birds in with one stone for the people who hate the "we're the Northam, we're the Northam" chant, "we're the Matthew Le Tissier over here" is a bit of a mouthfull :-)

Simple's!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not so simple!!!!

Difficult one for me. Ex Pompey manager , walked out on us and gave quotes of 'I would have crawled over broken glass to get the job' Upseting times.Have heard that the club did no favours then but not a person who would get 90% approval IMO

Why not Wayman, Ron Davies or many others who have been great for us?

Fair comment mate, still feel it would add more character to the stadium if we had, Matt Le Tissier, Payne, Channon and Stokes as opposed to what we have??

mind you knowing how some people are on here we'd have arguments about who goes where and who should be honoured (not you nick) maybe stay as we are!!!!

I think the only person who should have a stand named is Ted Bates, the true grandfather of this club.

The others yes great players but how would you decide, Ted I believe would be the only one to receive all round support , and really it should be the Itchen renamed as his statue is placed there.

Disagree Ball was an Evertonian rather than a saint, but there should be a Channon stand and one of our stands should be renamed whilst he is still with us.

Don't agree with Ipswich if they thought that much of him they should have done this when Robson was alive

Disagree with this. If anything there are at least 2 others that merit such a honour. Terry Paine for his never to be beaten 815 appearances and Mick Channon for his unlikely to be beaten 228 goals.

IMHO Alan Ball does not warrant a stand named after him as he achieved so much more elsewhere rather than at Saints.

Channon, Mcmenemy, Le Tiss, Paine, Davies & Bates (to name a few) have done such for Saints and we should hold tight for now!

Ted has his own statue so he is suitably honoured. To try and curtail the number of illuminaries, I'd say stick to players and I'd personally opt for Tiss, Channon, Paine and Holmes.

Great servants and the leading players for appearances in the red and white:

* Terry Paine 713

* Mick Channon 510

* Nick Holmes 444

* Matt Le Tissier 443

* Tommy Traynor 434

* Jason Dodd 398

* Eric Day 398

* Bert Shelley 392

* Claus Lundekvam 357

* Stan Woodhouse 351

* John Sydenham 342

* Francis Benali 311

* Hugh Fisher 302

* Tommy Mulgrew 293

* Glenn ****erill 287

I like it the way it is to be honest. They all mean something to the city. Some players have done great and deserve some recognition but in all honesty i think they are few.

Le Tissier obviously but in many years to come i can see Lawrie getting a statue or something. Sadly probably when he passes on. Love him or hate him he was the one that brought the best years to this club. And obviously Mr Southampton. So those 3 people would be deserving in my view. Alan Ball as good as he was, was just another good player at the club.

I would have:

The Alan Ball Stand (Chapel) as he was known as a family man.

The Ted Bates Stand (Itchen) as he was the main man in club history.

The Matt Le Tissier Stand (Northam) as he was the hero of the general Saints supporting public.

The Terry Paine Stand (Kingsland) as this stand is closest to the City Centre (The Dell, site of his legendary performances for Saints).

What exactly did Alan Ball achieve with Saints?

Not enough to name a stand after him, that's a fact

If he wasn't dead, there is no way people would be going on about naming a stand after him. Good (not great) manager for us, but only did one full season and was off up the M6 for the money as soon as his old chum Franny came calling.

Anyway, I like the current names, naming stands after players is lame, naming them after the areas really puts the stadium (a modern building) in the heart of the old city.

Nope. Not old enough. Played fewer than 200 games for us, and all of those appearances were during his Indian Summer, not his peak.

So in terms of matches played, you'd be better off naming a stand after, say, Matty Oakley.

Alan Ball in terms of contribution/affinity to Saints is not Channon, Davies, Le Tissier, Paine or Bates.

Well believe me, he was fantastic, and note that I did list Le Tiss, Paine and Bates as well. Davies and Channon I agree weregreat for the club, but hasn't Channon already got a Suite named after him? I'm not sure.

Don't honestly think Matt Oakley could be classed in the same league as the others quoted.

As much as I love the little man I do not agree that he would be one of the top 4 servants to this club.

If we are to name stands after our most treasured players or managers then they would need to be either:

1) Home grown

2) One club players or

3) A very special manager

Bobby Robson was a geordie who started his managerial career at Ipswich and turned the club completely around. He was exceptional.

Bally was special to me but I could never argue that he was one of our "own".

much as i loved what Ball did for the club the above post sums up why i do NOT think we should ever consider naming a stand after him.

No, Ted Bates is the only man worthy of naming a stand after.

Agreed although in recognition of their efforts we could have the Le Tissier, Crouch, Lynam and Fialka stand.

Rename the Kingsland to Bates and the Itchen to Liebherr and if anyone else devotes their entire life to the club or saves it from extinction with many millions of their own pounds then the Chapel or Northam can be renamed but that may be a while yet.

I agree mate, the 'Ted Bates' stand instead of the Itchen. Don't think you'd get many people argue if a stand was named after Matt Le Tiss or Channon either though??
