He has all the makings of a very good player so I'd much rather we took a gamble and signed him up ASAP, rather than invest our time and money into developing a player for a team that will no doubt be our rivals in the near future.

It's not like we can't afford to take a gamble in signing a young, talented player who is already making a positive impact!

Loan until Jan with a permanent move agreed from then please.

If we can't get him on a extended loan contract then how about we just get a piece of rope about the length of a football pitch, tie one end round his ankle, and the other end to the St marys stadium. I don't think there is anything in the FA rules that state we can't do it? We can't lose him.

I must admit before hand i was agreeing with forever, and actually still do.

But you make a very valid point, if we can get him cheap now i believe he could be a bargain, rather than allow him to grow and pay more for him.

Papa sounded like he had a good game today though, if like FM suggests we have a 500,000 fee agreed i would take that up. He still looks like he is lacking confidence but i think he is a real handful.

The 500k was just a guess by me, I would now think it is actually abit more possibly. Unlikely we will ever know as if we sign him it is likely to be undisclosed.

We need to sign him permanently in January if at all possible. I've been really impressed with him, he's obviously still raw and needs experience but he's got all the physical attributes a winger needs. He's a quality impact player from the bench, perfect for this league.

I fear if we take him on loan until the end of the season another club will come in and take him from us or he'd just end up costing a whole lot more.

I think we need to treat this with a little more caution. How many players have we seen on a short-term loan, look the business only for them to turn out to be average or poor. I'm for extending the loan to the end of the season, in order to have a proper look at him and then make a decision if a permanent signing is a right for us.

£500k is a huge amount for a largely untried L1 player. *If* Reading don't have him firmly in their plans for the future I'd have thought £200k or £300k was tops. This is the third division we're in now.

Antonio has indeed made a difference when he's come on, but he's very raw. Most of his game is simply "push it past the defender and run like hell", which with his pace is effective at this level, but he'll need more to his game when we get promoted.

Let's not forget that we have Kayne McLaggon recovering from injury, who to me at least, looked just as good (and as fast) last year at the higher CCC level. If he does return to full fitness and form, he will be excellent in L1.

So personally I'd be happy to see Antonio's loan extended and/or him to sign for a modest fee, but not £500k.

K.

Although I think we should show caution over signing Antonio, especially on an bloated fee. We can also not put our hopes on a young up and coming player, who has shown glimpses but has had a major injury. Who know's, he may never recover "fully" from this injury and if he does, he may never have the pace he had beforehand.

Hes under 24 so won't be free

Correct but as a guy who's never played above League One level (is that right?) and is, outside Reading and Soton, an unknown I imagine the price determined by the compensation committee would be next to nothing - about £200k tops.

I suspect, in fact, that Reading will be trying to persuade us to buy him in January rather than wait until the summer.

There is no way this guy is worth 500k. Reading would be p***ing themselves laughing if they get that, for a raw young player who has had no impact on the game, and anyway is surplus to their requirements.

50k might be worth it. He is quick, but also very raw. He has scared a few full backs in L1 with his pace, but he needs a whole lot more than that to become a starter in the team, especially as we move up the levels. For me, he is an impact player to come on for the last 30 mins to stretch the game and take advantage of the greater space available.

For me, Papa is a far more complete player. He knows how to defend, he has a good first touch, knows when to play it simple, but also knows when to take on the defence. He also knows where the goal is, as proven by his goals.

At the moment, Antonio seems to be a one-trick pony, namely to kick it a long way past the defender and leg it after the ball. In the early stages of a game, the space simply isn't available to do this.

That said, they are both key players in ensuring we have multiple strategies depending on the situation in the game.

So I would like to see us sign them both up permanently... but Papa is the most important of the two for our long term growth.

How do you know he is a one trick pony? - he has been brought on to do that one trick, he has only needed to do that one trick, and it has worked.

Worth starting him to see what affect that has and if he can do the rest. Unsettle the opposition from the start - don't give them time to sort themselves out and close down space. If they put two on him it creates space elsewhere. Your thinking is too conservative. Get at them from the start. put them on their backfoot, get them facing their own goal - that's when defences make mistakes.

I was careful to say 'At the moment, he appears to be a one trick pony', because I am aware that he hasn't been used in a more advanced role yet. But given the fact that I have watched a lot of football over the years, my guess is that, at the moment, he is the sort of player that is less suited to a starting role because he will offer less defensively. Particularly as he is a right-sided player, and whilst Lloyd James has played well this season, he is not yet the finished article from a defensive point of view. I don't think Lloyd should be left exposed in that way. It seems that Pards is thinking along the same lines as me, and I am glad of that. We have enough attacking outlets to break teams down, without Antonio on the pitch. But if Plan A fails as it does from time to time (failed against MK Dons and Leyton Orient, but worked against Gillingham, Oldham and Southend), then he is a great option to stretch the game.

That said, there may come a time when it may be worth starting with him at home to see what he can do. The Paint game springs to mind as an option for that.

He reminds me of Frankie Bennett, the "flying waiter", of whom a lot was expected, but sadly injuries ended his career here.

surprised anyone can look past chicken George when thinking about Antonio reminds them of.

Just a 1 month extension! I would have gone for longer.

May not have been an option? Reading will want him in the shop window for January and if we weren't prepared to loan with a view to permanent signing, then a month is probably all they were prepared to give as an extension?

Edit: It would suggest that he will not be allowed to play in the FA Cup this weekend though!

Worth remembering McLaggon who is the same age as Antonio and if anything has higher level experience than Antonio is returning to fitness and will give us another option down the right.

I've always thought McLaggon was left-footed. Certainly played down the left last season.

Agree with this.

Definitely would like to see more of him. Been impressed with him right from the start, but should probably still not sign him up just yet.
