Should Pardew rest players in JPT game ahead of Leeds?

Apologies if there's already a recent thread on this but couldn't see it...

I've always said we should concentrate 100% on getting into the play-offs whilst it's still mathematically possible, and that means resting key players in less important games such as the JPT semi-final.

If it's a good enough tactic for the likes of Ferguson and Wenger then it's good enough for me.

No doubt everyone shares my thoughts on this and the thread will wither into the night with little or no debate on the subject. It's that clear cut....

TBH the only player's I'd consider resting are those on 4 yellows, so for me i'd still play Lambo/Connolly/Lallana.... players should be used to playing Saturday > Tuesday > Saturday in the football league anyway.

Let's not forget Leeds also have a tricky JPT tie as well, will be interesting to see what importance they place on it.

Professional footballers should be able to play two games in a week. Rest a couple of those in danger of suspension - jaidi mainly - but i wanna go all out for a wembley trip

As Pards said we should go out to win every game

we also have a chance at promotion...

if you had to choose..which is more important..?

No, we have an outside chance of promotion. We are still 9 points off the playoffs and making progress against the teams in the top 6 will be much slower than overtaking the teams at the bottom.

I'm not giving up, but I wouldn't throw away the chance of our first piece of Silverware for 34 years on one heck of a long shot. Not a question of importance, it's about likelyhood.

says who...you..?

just like a few weeks back thinking about promotion was unrealistic..?

9 points is feck all...if we were 9 points from safety would you say it was all over now..? of course you would not

I agree with most of the comments on here so far.

I think, due to the timing of it all, and knowing how the momentum factor can influence results; lets put our best team out on Tuesday, get a good result, and then that will carry on to the Leeds game.

Put a weak team out, loose, and then heads, hearts, and expectations will drop, we then might lose against Leeds, and three points are dropped.

I see that this Tuesdays result might have an impact on the Leeds game. So lets win both, and rest our best players when we play lesser teams later on in the league, hopefully after strengthining our squad in January.

Simples:cool:

I do think we have a very good chance of making the play offs given the current form and hopefully squad improvement in January. However...your comparison of 9 points from safety and 9 points from the play offs is a poor one. It is much easier to catch up with teams at the bottom of the league than at the top. ;) :D

either way...to suggest it is a long shot when you are 9 points away and clearly better than nearly all in the league (added to additions in jan) is a bit daft..

to be fair, right now, I will be deflated if we dont make the playoffs

No. While there is a slim chance of injury, the team are clearing playing out of their skins and will want the silverware as much as promotion. There's a great chance to win the trophy and only an outside chance of promotion still at this stage. AP has to go with a strong team IMO. If we win at SMS 5-0 then he might play a weakened team in the 2nd leg perhaps?! ;)

Me too, but I don't think that the Leeds away game is going to be a crucial game for us.

9 points isn't feck all, it's a large amount. Considering we started the season 10 points off the playoffs and we're all but halfway through the seaon, it really is an uphill struggle.

The fact of the matter is we will need to score an automatic promotion amount of points to make the playoffs. If you can name any team in history which has won 1 of it's first 10 League games and finished in the top 2, I'd be more than a bit surprised.

9 points from safety isn't the end of the world. But in that scenario, three wins and you're right back in it. With promotion it's different. It's more like three wins and the team in 6th wins two and draws one. It only gets you two points nearer. You'd need to maintain that form (i.e. winning every game) for about four months to overhall the team in sixth.

I'd rest Harding and Jaidi on the basis that they're only one yellow card away from being suspended.

I'd go with a starting XI something like this . . .

----------------- Davis --------------

James ---- Thomas ---- Perry ---- Mills

Waigo -- Wotton -- Hammond -- Lallana

--------- Lambert -- Connolly ----------

Be interesting to see what team Pardew does go with however. Time will tell.

Exactly what i'd go for too, except for Davis in goal of course....

Ah yes, completely forgot Davis is still out injured. Bialkowski in for him then, obviously.

Why no Morgan???

I'd be tempted to rest him for Leeds away to be honest, although I wouldn't be surprised if Pards selected Morgan for Tuesday night.

No resting of players for me. Play the strongest team possible on Tuesday, I would sacrifice the points on Saturday for a trip to Wembley. Plenty more points to be had over the rest of the season to gain a play off spot.

How good would it be to have a day out a Wembley not only for the fans but for the club as a whole after the last year we have endured.

There's no right answer for this one IMO; only hindsight will tell us what the best outcome was.

If we play a strong team, win the game and the players all come through unscathed then it will be a huge boost to our confidence and keep hopes alive of picking up some silverware. When the team are winning games no player wants to be dropped, and enjoying a victory over one the strongest teams in the league would be a great shot in the arm. Playing a severely weakened team and getting beaten just won't allow for that and could be seen as a backwards step.

However, if we have an injury such as Murty's against Birmingham (again a cup game) then there will be accusations that players should have been rested for the promotion push.

I'd prefer to see us play a strong team, though I'm all to aware of the risks it poses.

There is a slight difference with the managers in question - they have a squad of world class footballers....

The only player I would consider resting is Connolly, purely from a perspective of getting the most from him. Even so I would have him on the bench. However, leaving someone on the bench to avoid a ban is possibly a different matter. We need to go to Leeds with our stringest team available, because we can get a result there, but that doesn't mean we should not go all out for a win against Norwich. With the exception of Connolly, resting players to avoid them being tired is a total nonsense - these are professional athletes, who actually thrive on playing rather than training. Also messing around with a winning team is often the most disruptive thing a manager can do.

Bugger this soft attitude of forgetting about the cup in favour of the league, I ****ing want to win both, or at least go to Wembley twice and get to the semis of the FA Cup :)

Only 1 leg to the Semi Final!

Rest the ones on four bookings, otherwise play the strongest team available.

Agreed, and drop Connolly to the bench and start Papa Waigo. He works quite well with Ricky. I'd go 4-5-1, with Lambert as the striker, and it would mean that Papa would be caught offside less often. :)

I was totally with you until you suggested we go with our stringest team. I'd definitely choose our strongest. :D
